no. he knocked it unconscious with a large stick also called a club and thought it was dead. there was a large open wound exposing brain matter so he rightfully thought he killed it, dead. so it was not a little tiny 'stick'. it was a LARGE branch, also sometimes called a make-shift 'bat', or club, that he picked up before running towards where Suzy was engage with the being. the movie S I G N S replicates this event in its climatic scene at the end of the movie.

The obelisk is the name theyve given it and the Dr. left it there when leaving the Cascade mountains after this event. The Dr and his friend Gary went back the next day to see if it was still there. They were actually going to try to bring this thing back.

Once Dr. Reed attacked the Being knocking it unconscious the Dr. became immediately 'sick'. Hyperventilating, dehydration, nausea, diarrhea, set in basically incapacitating him. Directly after knocking the being unconscious. Its mentioned Dr Reed believes somehow the being's self-defense mechanism was somehow able to render him immobile. Thus you hear him struggling to gain control of his respiratory & bodily functions, breathing etc.
