  • DiDonato is absolutely the best!

  • Best Laudamus Te that I've found on YouTube. Part of this is visually the rapport between singer and violinist.

  • Best Laudamus Te that I've found on YouTube.

  • @thecelticspirit

You mean that she uses a closed 'e'? It's more Germanic to use a closed 'e' and it may very well be period to do it that way.

  • @AnonBatch this is more so what I meant - thanks. :)

  • I am just in love right now with that middle B at 1:28!! The violin's accompaniment is just so lovely and perfect with this tone. It's as if it could never be sung incorrectly.

  • Can somebody explain why she pronounces 'te' as she does? I was under the impression that the vowel sound that she has used is incorrect in Latin - another system of Latin pronunciation?

  • @malbertmacl She's not "mispronouncing" it. She "modifies" it for maximum resonance and tone production. The "eh" sound is very difficult to maintain full resonance and pitch control, so modifying the vowel helps her control the pitch and resonance.

  • @wanzenettl I wasn't trying to imply that it was 'wrong' as I wouldn't expect Ms. DiDonato to do anything of the sort - simply curious as to the reason why. Your reason makes sense, but I enjoyed the response of AnonBatch - made sense to me.

  • @malbertmacl Interesting you should pick out the pronunciation of the vowel in "te." I always pay a lot more attention to the consonants and endings such as -um, which are of course pronounced very differently here than in classical Latin.

  • @DauphinSuppleChirp I have very limited singing experience, as i am mainly a pianist and moreso a composer - I can remember a choir director HARPING on about the long e vowel when we were singing Handel's Dixit Dominus - so, for example, I wouldn't know about 'um' but if it was 'Im Paradisum' my instinct would be 'oom' in a very front, forward, french way.
