That is my favourite old northern lines big one are best it stock. But I dislike new trains for northern line, of course being new trains. But this is a problem combcation invisible of demons attacked in the trains every-day and night. Some people who knows about dislike new trains because of they being affecting hiding inside the trains is called hunter of the demons. That is very nightmare of the northern line. But I don't do that anymore, I’m got a take a bus to travel normal way life.
Great video. I drove these back in 1986, when 'travelling for my job' and based at Golders Green. I found the 72's were better on Westinghouse than the 59's, but then the older 59's were better at stopping in wet conditions. Worst for westinghouse were the 56's, which we used to go up to Mill Hill East. A great line the Northern, and I was sorry to leave it, but I lived quite a distance away. My nickname may tell you where I moved to.
Acctually, the 1972mk1 stock was brought in so the Bakerloo line could have back the last of the 1938 stock trains on the northern line. In return the northern line got back some 1956/59 stock trains
the 1959/62 stocks were absolutely lovely though. such classic london underground designs. it's a shame they weren't just refurbished and kept. plus the 92 stock on the central line seems to have a lot of problems, let's hope it's the central line that gets new stock soon.
I really wish they were kept on but they were to old to be re-furbished and were at that time very unreliable you could expect one to breakdown every few days
most certainly, and i was wondering, do you know if they have cctv on those trains in the carriages? As i have been told they don't but then i was watching a documentary which showed "cctv footage from inside a Northern Line train" which was 1995 stock and looked quite real...
being a commuter on the Northern line every monday - friday to work in the morning peak, i must admit the 1995 stock is FAR superior to that which it replaced. I'd far rather end up packed in on a 1995 stock as i know about the saftey regulations it complies with as opposed to end up packed up on a old thing and end up breaking through a wall and asbestos flying everywhere ;) ... 1995 stock is very very good and suits its job, and makes my journey so much easier. Thanks Alstom!
But they are awful on a hot day. poor ventilation, heat from motors and electrical equipment venting into the carriage. Sure the modern safety standards are important espcially given the number of red lights the drivers run. But they are obviously designed by people who never travel by public transport. It would be nice if they would keep them clean, the dirt on the seats is disgraceful
i must agree with you about the dirt on the seats, there is like a U shape where people have sat where it's "clean" and then in the space behind that its all disgusting. It's also a shame about the etching on the windows they suffer, and the heat is pretty bad, however i usually find the Victoria Line to be a killer for heat, with the picadilly line as the most packed so usually quite hot too.
Yes the window etching, although not LU's fault, should be tackled swiftly. Rather than spending 70 million a year on free kids travel at weekends and everyday on the buses, the money should be spend dealing with the etching problem.
when did you ever hear of a 1959 stock train smashing through a wall? 1938 stock perhaps at Moorgate but as most of the passengers died through being squashed to death in that smash i doubt that asbestos was ever on their minds! the 1959 stock was built to a solid safe and durable design based on the 1938 stock which has outstripped it in terms of service on the isle of wight.
I've worked on both stocks, the 1972 stock on the Bakerloo (which was gifted to us when the Northern line got it's new stock) was a joy to work on, although every nut and bolt was imperial. The 1995 stock on the Northern (and to many extents, the Jubilee) is all computer controller and requires very little thinking from the fitters

I still look for a tube type which ran on Northern and Bakerloo Line and probably on Jubilee as well when there weren't enough 1983ers.
Might it be the 1956 tube stock or any modification that seems nowhere recorded?

maxitrain989 4 years ago
no they're not. i don't even use the london underground, as i live in Glasgow, and i know that 1995 rocks.
