@oopman12 - They're not just advertising. No. They're litter. Advertising comes in two types: Lawful and unlawful. Yes, many advertisers spend their time doing nothing but illegally locating advertising, like these signs. Every single one in this video was illegally located. Well it's easy to spend the same amount of money on legal forms of advertising. They used this kind because they thought it was more effective. They have sinced switched to billboards and other legal ways.
@oopman12 - People like me. We're called "sign sharks" and we understand that trash is trash. We care about the towns we live in, so we do some civic service. The company that put these signs out changed their ways, and not don't do these signs. I'd say that's progress, no matter why they stopped. It's a lot less trash on the side of the road.
I tossed 'em. I could've taken the trouble to separate them from the signs themselves, but I didn't. I suppose that would've made it more worth my time, but recycling around here doesn't pay much for metal these days.
You should call the parks department and arrange for space for a public art installment, wherein you arrange all these signs together in one big loop, with the arrows directing people walk around in a circuit.
AlderDragon - No they're not supposed to be there. The company that puts them there doesn't have permission from the city to put them there, just like most of the trash advertising that gets onto street light poles. It's totally illegal there.
Legally this is the same as if you were to pick up a crumbled up piece of paper off the ground, or a beer can, or a used condom. It's trash that someone thoughtlessly left somewhere they shouldn't have. I've checked with the police on this several times, and it's always the same: "Thanks for helping to clean up Austin, Joe."
mrmeeno Yes, and I predict that soon I will have to forego the use of the car because of gas prices. On bike I move slower, and it's a bit difficult. Plus I can't crank up NIN the whole time. But yes, that may be the only way soon...
I saw a story in the Austin American Statesman about a subdivision wanting to renaming "Devil River Loop" to something less Satanic. Would a tour of Austin's Holy and Unholy street names be a fun satiric project?
I'm getting a little angry at the company that puts them out now, since they just replaced several of the ones I removed less than 24 hours ago...I was thinking of chopping a few of them up into little pieces and depositing them on their parking lot, but that would be littering...So what to do? I'm open to suggestions. One is to recycle them, which may be harder than one might think. We'll see.
@aajoeyjo I think the point your trying to make is great.Has there been any media coverage?Have you contacted any media about your concerns? A little embarrassment can go a ong way!
@BCBUD69 - I have told the media about this several times. They don't care. I know I've pissed off some sign bandits over the years, and even that's not enough to interest the media. Someday I plan to spill a lot of gathered up info and footage of what I do in the big picture, and it'll be a doozie. Glad you like the point.
thefakeyeti Yes I make a point not to remove the following types of signs, no matter where I see them: Missing or found person notices, missing or found pet notices, garage sale signs ONLY if it's this weekend, as in not over already. Also any sign that is illegible comes down, no matter what it used to clearly say. So yes, I discriminate on the kinds of advertising I remove.
NEWSTOGOD Y'know, I'm going to keep that idea handy in my mind, just in case I feel like stirring the pot a little. It's fun to be the good guys, because the bad guys just can't do the things we can...cause they're baaad! They're very baaad! lol
The down side of that is then the signs are still up and the city is still littered. The most effective way to deal with them is to remove them repeatedly (the sooner after they go up, the better). Eventually, they'll get the idea that it's not worth their time or money.
Well there's good news, Edgewick has stopped putting out those signs, in my neighborhood anyway. They haven't done it here in about a month now. I'm still monitoring them, but I also saw that they got a billboard. Bravo to them! That's legitimate.
Way to go! I often call businesses after I've sharked their signs to let them know they're down and that they will be taken down again if they're replaced. You might want to add causs to your title to encourage others to start sharking. Keep up the great work!
Dalbert342 Thanks! I'm going to try to recycle them, but I don't hold out much hope for that. Many seemingly recyclable items are just not recycleable. Recycle-able....re-cycle-able....aw screwit.
Yeah, tell me about it...I hauled 500 cans to a recycling plant and they told me they only do paper...so I had to drive to freaking Detroit to find a place to accept the beer cans lol system just doesn't work as intended
@aajoeyjo The corrugated plastic ones are great for all sorts of temporary repairs and similar projects. They also make great target backers for shooting ranges.
Good work! Now I know where to get free tomato stakes! I've got one for ya. Some church puts up a banner on the corner of a public school's property every Friday, then it is down again by Monday morning. (Dickinson, TX.) I took a pic the other day, but haven't downloaded it yet. Could this be a violation of church/state separation?
Just that they advertise this way. There are many legitimate ways to advertise, and this is not one of them. Other than that, they're trying to get more people to move here to Austin, and right now that's really not cool. That freeway gets clogged way too often.
Like this video more than your others (less talk, more action. Thanks for helping clean up the streets.

Stealing signs ... You made some profit. Btw, change your clothes, they look horrible to be honest with you.

@phantomy82 You're a sign bandit, aren't you? Sure, you have a good reason to be angry at me. But it won't change the law. lol! :o)

@oopman12 - A sign? Not me. Oh if only this was A sign. It was dozens each weekend. I wouldn't make a video showing me disposing of just one sign.

Or are you suggesting he use some sort of trailer?

Maybe I just haven't noticed..
but thesekind of signs aren't that big of a deal here..
and when they are signs.. it usually is advertising garge sales, graduation parties, birthday parties etc..
I would feel like a real dick if I removed those :P
But these edgewick people, they seem to be overdoing it. And they probably meant for those signs to be permanent..
As garage sales signs, are normally temporary, and usually don't have a ridiculous amount of them!
thefakeyeti 3 years ago
Oh I live in Minnesota, near Bemidji..
I personally think it would be more satisfying to see you destroy these signs (less likely to recycle them if they are destroyed)
But like you said... I suppouse you don't have all day.
