The audio telemetry that you hear from 3:00 to 3:24 was picked up & recorded from Ham Radio operators all over the World. It's a screeching sound. That signal, in this YouTube video, is actually from the first Sputnik satellite that Russia launched a month before Laika went up into space.
Leika was going to die no matter what. They planned to euthanize her with poisoned dog food, but she died before that.
The U.S., on the other hand, brought the space chimps (Ham, Enos) back alive, which is much more important. The Soviets were just completing half the mission.
As touching as this video might be, so outdated are the informations here.
Laika died 4-5 hours into the flight from stress and overheating (140°C).
Overall Laika's mission of no return might seem cruel on the first look, but she died for the greater good, giving the biggest sacrifice a dog can give.

We treat them like babies who cannot speak. The more time passes, the more I'm sorry about it. We shouldn't have done it... We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog.".

I agree with 1337Shockwav3 though, it was a necessary evil, and at least it was no where near as cruel as what Vladimir Demikhov did (Transplanted a dog's head to another dog, resulting in a two-headed dog that lived for... about 1-4 days... or was it hours?), though I still think it was a milestone event in Medicine... if one payed in blood...
