Yes this should of been a goal.

The rule states that if the ball is NOT held with both hands its considered open play and therefore Best was right to take the ball.

@plutonia00 You are wrong totally, the referee was correct to disallow the goal. The ball is deemed to be in control of the goalkeeper even if he is touching the ball with a finger never mind two hands. With respect to this incident even though the ball wasnt in Gordon Banks hands it was still a foul, as the act of kicking the ball out of your hands is deemd to be one motion. Not only that but he would now be cautioned for unsporting behaviour.

Should never have been disallowed. Banks did not have control of the ball. Control of the ball was always taken to mean two hands on the ball so cannot imagine what the ref was thinking about.

This goal is allowed! Banks left the ball and he didn't call the distance so Best can take the ball...In fact when he takes the ball the ball is "free", not in his hands...This was a wrong of Gordon Banks..The goal was not signed..the match was England vs. Rest Of The World

Thats actually a modern rule, was brought in when nigel clough headed the ball out of a keepers hands then scored

Having said that, you could argue that it is unsportsmanlike conduct if you want a reason to disallow it

Yep...the ref admitted years later, he'd never seen the like before, so disallowed it...I watched it LIVE (on tv), and couldn't believe Best's genius...
