@FPShkED, You should know that a tegu is VERY different from a Bearded. Be prepared to build at least an 8' by 4' cage and feed it A LOT. Also, these guys grow big very fast.

@Glitter234 BDs are VERY VERY friendly. They are just really lazy. haha If you take care of them well when they are at a young age, they will crawl on the glass of the tank for you to pick them up! Well, that's what mines do. He hates being in the tank and wants to come out whenever he can

i love reptiles! tegus are actually rather affectionate. i dont own one personally but my Reptile Education Club does, and Godzilla (tegus name) is always good and loves to cling to us. We also have 2 moniters, our blackthroat Grechin is a total lovebug. If you went to this years Sacremento Reptile Show then you might have seen her hugging me (for an hour or more)

@HitomiNoRyu Yes, u r right... I've lived in Japan where there's little to no import ban but there's no problem with land reptiles destroying the ecosystem. There's aquatic Red Ear Slider Turtle that grew in pupulation but the only reason for that is the false advertisement (pretending that they don't grow large) and just the sheer number of them going around for carnival amusement (turtle catching). Aquatic animals r also much harder to control.

It's unusual to see any from or reptile choose to cuddle or seek affection over food. Yet these guys all wanted to be with 'daddy' more than eat the food placed down. I am now offically interested in Tegu.

@DafyddEdward Tegus are good pets for the right person but not for everyone. I always considered them the macaws of the reptile world. They need consistent handling to keep them tame and happy. If don't give that attention to them, tegus can become very aggressive especially if you keep it cope up in a cage all day.

@HitomiNoRyu Yah, they appear to be very intelligent creatures, which means they need to be given a lot of attention and give them a change of scenery and so forth. I'd rather like one, but there's no way I could have one. I have neither the space, nor the safe environment (weather wise) for one. Our winter is basically 8 months of the year, and besides our brief summer, it's generally too cold for one to be comfortable.

@lorettathompson512 I watched that episode. They gave 1 example of a tegu biting a person, and in that example the persons dog had attacked the tegu first. The person attempted to break up the fight between the tegu and dog when he was bit. Tegus are usually more of a threat to rodents and egg laying animals since they eat the rodents and eggs. Chances are if a wild tegu saw a human it would run and hide. Corner the tegu and go after it and you will be in trouble.

People always seem to think that they're making some clever point when they mention that animals aren't capable of the same depth of emotion that humans are. Everyone already realizes this. That doesn't change the fact that social animals are capable of bonding with other creatures (try separating two animals who have grown up together if you don't believe me), and in the case of your pets, they've bonded with YOU. If that's not worth being touched by, I don't know what is.
