  • OMG thanx for gears of war i meet this incrdible music

  • @TheViolentschool True. I decided to find more Sun Kil Moon songs because of GOW trailer and I am really grateful they helped me to find such amazing music.

  • Shit.

  • @maddiekaterox Indeed, it is spilling out of your mouth quite rapidly.

  • This one or the mm one... I can't decide... good thing I don't have to.

  • this is just breath taking...

  • I love this song :)

  • Sun kill moon is the best band name i ever heard :)

  • It's an ok cover. The original is better, but Sun Kil Moon did an ok job.

  • its so wierd for this song to be sung this way but i fucking luvs it

  • watch?v=TPhnOKmhbBw

  • 0:50 to 0:53 The girl from The Ring.

  • I've been a huge fan of RHP for the past year, listening to it more than any other group or act.. I also love Modest Mouse and I can't say anything bad about either one. Stop taking sides, you fucks, it's not a competition and this cover is good because it's not a regurgitation, it's a reinterpretation.. Which is the way it should be.

  • Beautiful. Brilliant. Mark Kozelek is a gifted singer and songwriter. Haters, fuck off.

  • @nowhawkins his not in anyway a good songwriter? he steals ppl music that acually have talent

  • @nowhawkins yea like that TheYzkidpimp12 guy i mean seriosly

  • @mysyndrome42 hahahahha awwww lol bitch

  • It's good, don't get me wrong, but how he sings it..kind of sounds like he has something in his mouth. Might be his type of singing, but, y'know, I normally don't say this (I hate country music) but.....yeah, I can listen to this on the radio.

  • No matter your favorite version both are chill songs just made to enjoy so quit your bitching and keep the posts mellow

  • Anyone with a good ear knows this is great music. It sounds nothing like the original. That's why it's called a remake. Dumbasses. In fact, this version may even sound better.

  • @Devoo55 You see now, the clue that you weren't going to get MM was in the title "Sun Kil Moon - Ocean Breathes Salty" I'm sorry you didn't get what you wanted, but, I'm sure that you'll find it elsewhere. Great music is often covered by others, there's no reason to feel threatened by it. Some people are quite blinkered in their music tastes, I guess it's best they stick with what they know. If you can't find the MM version here you could always consider buying it. Thanks for dropping by.

  • @terr0rkitten thank you sir. MM is an amazing band with amazing music, and i think it honors them that another band would make such a great cover.

  • @Devoo55 OMG FUCKING RIGHT? THIS IS BULLSHIT THIS PUT MODEST MOUSE TO SHAME!!!!!!!!!! FUCK ANY AND EVERYONE WHO LIKES THIS! thank u for puting that? god ppl are stupid to listen to this

  • @TheYzkidpimp12 go fuck yourself u dick some people listen to this so keep your thoughts 2 your goddamn self k?thanks

  • @Devoo55 fuck yourself

  • @Devoo55

Country? You need to listen to some of their dark stuff... like Heron Blue.

  • The problem with this record is, to put it into the simpliest of terms; Modest Mouse is a crap band, though with a good songwriter. Their fans are funky douchebags that are reluctant to embrace a piece of beautiful music that overpowers the original songs. If you don't fancy Mark, Sun Kil Moon or Red House Painters, just fuck off.

  • this.... isn't good either, they keep ruining the tunes, but, i mean, to each their own.

  • I think good covers take a song that distinguished itself by being unique and creative, strips away the key distinguishing elements of the song, and then apply their own elements to the song, forcing the listener to hear a familiar song in an almost totally new way.

This is really a perfect example of a song that does this. It distinctively recreates the song without utterly destroying the identifying characteristics of the original- and I like that!

  • Why? Why do this to a good song? It makes my insides hurt! This is pure crap

  • @HarryWeenerz Yeah fucking over perfect music like that... Dx

  • love it...

  • I love this line= "You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye."

  • I've got to say, I didn't like some of the covers but this one works, it works for sure. The genius of the writing just works with different voices and melodies. I <3 this version but not more than the original. This one just makes me think more on what the lyrics are truly saying.

  • I lost my job 3 months ago. My Rottwieler, of 10 years, passed away in my arms a month ago. I just lost the house I've lived in for 10 years, 2 weeks ago. This song is like medication to me, it truly is... Great video @terr0rkitten

  • Tarkovsky and Sun Kil Moon - so happy to see my two favourites combined here!

  • Kind of dumb the say the chick hangs her hair so long and puts her arms out like some kind of stupid bird. Bird-chicks are the worst kind of chick at all. And then she gets some silly far-away look on her face, kind of looks like Psycho Paul's girlfriend, somewhat mannish, man-like.

I don't really like that chick, can you guys tell? Anyways, I kind of liked this version when I heard it earlier last week but now I'm not sure if I like the song at all.

    Whatever, who cares anyways.

  • The video is made from Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky's "Mirror."

  • Credit to Andrey Tarkovsky for the images.

  • it does work.

  • it's does work, doesn't it.

  • does this work? I'm not sure?

  • gears of war made me like this band

  • Comment removed

  • What was the film that you used for this song - it looks really interesting!

  • mark you are a very proficient songwriter stop covering other peoples songs dammit

  • Is sun kil moon a good band?

  • omg.. D=

  • Beautiful reinterpretation of a fantastic song

  • man such a wack cover.. ruined it for me.. its whatever floats peoples boats tho.

  • I love their covers of Modest Mouse. It brings a sincere, sad quality to them, even though I love MM and their way of doing it too.

  • These are excerpts from Tarkovsky's "The Mirror" correct? It fits the mood very well. Funny how I love this song and film, too. Good juxtaposition.

  • Sun Kil Moon's music makes me cry. I know it sounds kinda corny but that's what happened.

I knew of Red House Painters which made me investigate Sun Kil Moon. I listened to a few tracks, they were okay. And then I listened to 'Moorestown' and the first few strains of the melancholic melody and glum, calm vocals made tears fall from my eyes. The same thing happened when I listed to "Ocean Breathes Salty." I just found out it's a cover, now I'm off to discover the original.

  • I love Sun Kil Moon. Their music is so calming. I could have the worst day of my life and I would feel good after listening to their music.

  • I've listened to this at least 30 times, no joke, thanks for the upload

  • Beautiful video to go with this song.

  • Good in it's own way, but they aren't making this song with the same ideas of the original. The original is saying there is no after life... this video doesn't even relate to the original.

  • @elevat0r123 The video was never meant to relate to the original. The video was something I did for me, it works for me and it would appear a few others. Those that don't like it need never look at it again, but, I thank them for looking the once. I'm sure the original is out there for them.

  • @terr0rkitten, wait you did you make this video or did you find it? I'm just wondering, somebody suggested me to this song and video from the original, and I just checked it out.

  • @elevat0r123 It is footage from a favourite film of mine that I put with the music.

  • @terr0rkitten, ohhhh it does match the tone of the song and fits really well, good choice of video.

  • @elevat0r123 Thank you, it was the mood I was trying to catch not the words - thanks for looking and your kind words.

    Phil

  • @terr0rkitten , really nice choice of video for the song.... i find the mood uplifting... just got over a bad patch and this really cheered me up... nice work... :)

  • @terr0rkitten what film was the footage from - I would like to see it?

  • nice cover

  • This song is so strange.. I don't understand what it means at all. The lyrics are kind of haunting.

I love Sun Kil Moon's version of this song. The sole acoustic guitar is just beautiful. Modest Mouse's version is filled with what i'd consider ugly music and sub par singing.

  • Both versions are great.

They're too different to compare, so just enjoy them both.

  • I like this. Very different interpretation than the original.

  • WOW!!! I'm pumped. I just found these guys <3333 I said "sounds like Red House Painters" and then looked them up to find it is the same guy (can someone send me the tablature for Trailways?). Check out Regret by The Robot Ate Himself

  • something about this version just is chilling. modest mouses version is just as good no doubt. they are eaqual in my mind.

  • What is up with these comments?????

Modest Mouse is the original, and better, performer of these songs. Sun Kil Moon kills these songs. they are meant to be played how they were written, the music re-enforces the lyrics. This is garbage.

  • @CrazyGnome07

That's the most retarded statement I've ever heard.... well, maybe not the most, but definitely close.

  • @CrazyGnome07 Modest Mouse said they loved Mark Kozelek's version of their songs, so it looks like Modest Mouse disagrees with you.

  • So Im new to Sun Kil Moon and I have a question. Why do I see so many songs by Sun Kil Moon also being done by Modest Mouse?

  • @XCyclonusX Sun Kil Moon did an entire album, titled 'Tiny Cities,' covering eleven Modest Mouse songs. They run through all the middle albums of Brock and Co.

  • so who copied? Modest mouse or sun kil moon?

  • At first I was like MODEST MOUSE!! so i clicked on it and listened to it and was like WTF and looked at the title again only to realize I was stupid enough not to see that. :)

  • I think that this is a testament to great song writing. Not many songs can make such a big transition and still sound great. I had to read the lyrics to believe that it is the same song!

  • This version of this song is amazing, I love the modest mouse original but this song feels like it has a different meaning by Sun Kil Moon.

  • Ocean Breathes Salty was one of the first songs that made me aware of Mark Kozelek's latest project, Sun Kil Moon.

There's something about this song that, in spite of its sadness and weariness, makes you want to stand up and make a conscious effort to make the most of your life despite the pain involved in it.

Try not to waste your life or else your death will be wasted as well. This is what this song means to me.

  • powerful and true

  • Oh wow. I read a review on this album and they claimed this was just mopey. Stupid. Idiotic. This clearly isn't the case. This is exactly what Modest Mouse did with the original: create a song of reflection. Mark did just that. This is beautiful. I have a tinge in my heart like I do with the original. Bravo.

  • wish he'd open his mouth when he sang.

  • "Maybe we'll get lucky, and we'll both live again.

    I don't know.

    I don't know.

    I don't think so."

  • I have very deep personal ties with this song. I'm biased. The Sun kil moon version is god-aweful. I'd like to break his guitar over This Kozelek guy's head

  • well, having listened once you need never listen again - I'm sure the MM version is there for you.

    Thank you for popping by!

  • yeah, I know. But you have to understand.

  • Mmmm, personal ties are, well, personal! As I said, you listened and it didn't do anything for you - your ties are with the original, that's cool. Best stick with it. I have tunes that are the same for me - only the original will do and then I have this - only the cover will do. Each to their own I say.

  • Well-put : )

  • I don't see the point in rating one against the other, nor why any Modest Mouse fan would be upset about this cover. Clearly Mark Kozelek found this song beautiful, and packaged it in a way to share the beauty he saw in the song with everyone else. If nothing else, it helps people that are turned off by Issac's eccentric ways realize the power of his lyrics/music. I'll toast one beer right now to Modest Mouse, and another to Sun Kil Moon. Fine bands both

  • Thank GOD! Some common sense on the matter - so much bitching on here - see the beauty in both and if one offends then don't listen to it again. Your point is good about the beauty that Kozelek obviously found in the orginal to even contemplate the cover.

Modest Mouse fans are most welcome here, but, the bad mouthing gets tedious I have to say.

Personally, I don't like the original, so if this brings me to the writers work surely that is a good thing.

  • Often people want to claim a cover is better then the original, but see the original created the beauty, the lyrics and the sound the meaning everything. This merely imitates it and changes the sound a little. The original is brilliant in many ways, and while this may be easier to listen to, it doesn't have the same artistic expression that it was meant to have, the lyrics are meant to be sung the way they are by iaasac to further the meaning of what he was trying to say. Still a good cover tho

  • modest hip hip cheer cheer !

  • i dont get what everybody is talking about, this cover doesnt even come close to the original

  • Best not worry yourself about it - the orginal is there to listen to. The beauty of choice I guess. I see the modest mouse version is there for you.

    Thanks for dropping by

  • Modest Mouse's original was much superior.

  • yes, terror kitten is not very terrifying. wheres that classic arguementative passion in text comments of youtube vids. I live for that shit.

  • I love people arguing in the comments section, it's so fun to read.

  • I'm all for a polite exchange of views, however, if it gets silly I just delete and block the person! I won't put up with unreasonable ranting - lets keep it nice I say!

  • I prefer being part of polite conversations, I'm not one to enjoy arguing, but when other people are senselessly arguing, I find it funny. I'm also not a fan of blocking people. But yeah, thanks for the upload.

  • oh, I wasn't pointing the finger at you - silly arguments are fine, but, some people are just damn offensive - I prefer not to block, but, offensive people just have to be got rid of. I figure I put music up by artists I respect and like and don't have to tolerate bad language, they can take that elsewhere.

OKay, that's enough of that! On with the music.

  • well, I guess if you want the 'Classic argumentative passion' you may have to go elsewhere. I can't be assed to argue the toss on whether a cover is valid and whose version is better - listen, if you like listen again and if you don't just move on!

I put up shit I like, I hope others do as well. If not, discuss like nice boys and girls or I will be forced to step in ;)

  • Mmmm, I never did profess to be a Terror of a Kitten - more a pussycat.

  • shut up, the mm version is amazing, not this boring, emotionless, tone-deaf shit. It's got a feeling to it, that's unique, and this feels like the rest of all of mark kozelek's crap. The mm version is bursting with different emotions. It's not meant to be beautiful, it's meant to be sad, and depressing, and chaotic, and confused because that's what death is like for the people who survive. This version is a castrated, amputated disgrace of of the original. This version is trash. Utter trash.

  • the mm version is good man...i have been listening to indie music for a looooong time. i live, breathe, sweat bleed and shit indie music. and i know bad poseur shit when i hear/smell it..this version however IS quite beautiful

  • Bud, let me TELL you I agree. You are good and keep talking, cause you have much to say

  • Older Modest Mouse is some of the greatest indie music ever produced. This cover is amazing, but Modest Mouse is massive in their own right.

  • not better dude....just different...and both are fantastic

  • Mark Kozelek has never made me think "which version is better?" in regards to his covers. He just makes me love both even more.

  • @evenrane

I couldn't agree with you more.... you summed it up perfectly.

  • so haunting.

    i love both verisions.

  • i think he made this because modest mouse had an effect on him, or he just likes them. both versions cannot be compared because both are being portrayed by two entirely different artists. i honestly like them both equally.

  • Ugh, I really have to try and pay attention to this song to actually get what he's saying, and it just doesn't really feel all that worth it, when I can just listen to Modest Mouse, especially when that version sounds only about 20 times better

  • I think the difference, which comes out even more when you see this video and the video for the Modest Mouse version is essentially this: Modest Mouse's version is dark, very dark, and creepy, whereas Sun Kil Moon's is more straightforwardly sad and tragic. If someone put a gun to my head, I guess I'd say MM's is better, but I think they complement each other well, capturing two different aspects of the same subject. They fit together like a hand in glove.

  • This is a much slower version than the original. Modest Mouse made this song, with more of a stoner feel and a happier feel.

This one just makes me sad.....

  • This song makes me very sad because it reminds me of bad memories, failures, mistakes. Just how empty my heart is. the only rason that I think I keep lisening to it is because it is so beautiful.

  • i think its a call to not wate your efforts being fearful but pursue life and take advantage because in the end we dont know where we are going to go. this may be it.

  • I think this is a better version than the Modest Mouse version. I do love both though. There is something about Mark Kozelek's voice.

  • I think the Modest Mouse version has more power and raw emotion.

  • I think the original one is sadder.

  • I really like the verses, but the way he changes the vocal melody in the chorus doesn't work with me... it's a shame though, nice cover otherwise.

  • Kozelek's does a fantastic job interpreting a song that is tough to pull off simplistically. Beautiful stuff.

  • this is the golden age of music we have hit the spiritual plateau thatbthe fifties fortold what beautiful souind. this is slo core at its bvest the new punk the new rap the new electronica this is truly cutting edge progressive. who wouldve thought. if you share the same beliefs please contact me

  • cool story, bro.

  • I agree. For as much garbage as there is out there right now, there is just as much truly melodic, thoughtful deep music being produced by true creative artists. We r in a unique time, the end of the old age.

  • don't be stupid, there will always be creative people making good music and stupid people make bad pop music...just like it was in the 60s...

  • its not being stupid we are describing the same thing you are, the sine wave that is music. it goes up and goes down. you are right though every age has its goodies however i was describing the predominant feel at the time its decidedly qualitative sound. even pop sounds decent. so anyways yeah you say this i say that you tell me what you want and ill tell you what you get you get away from me.

  • For those of you who don't like Kozelek's covers, that is fine. I personally think the man's a genius. He's done maginficent covers of John Denver and AC/DC to name a few but his own stuff with RHP and SKM is incredible. I recommend anyone that likes this song go check out his albums 'April', 'Tiny Cities' and 'Ghosts of the Great Highway'. If you're someone who would rather bash his music as 'boring' or 'lame'.. wait 10 years until you grow up, and listen again when you are more mature.

  • It is okay, I respect his choice to cover a great band. I'm not a big fan of super generic acoustic covers like this unless the song can't easily be converted...this just isn't that entertaining. It sounds good, not offensive to hear I just don't see myself hunting it down on my iPod during a party or something.

  • Once again, I can't believe the Modest Mouse version exists. This interpretation is infinitely better: free of unnecessary inflection, annoying atonality, and all the other garbage the magazines call sweater rock. I can't believe one of those assholes wrote such lyrics. It arouses my interest in the original in ways I'd have previously disregarded.

  • Yeah, this is far more generic and easier to listen to for the tone def general public than anything Modest Mouse has put together. Actually, I won't insult this artist because clearly he respects Modest Mouse and in that way has far better taste than you can ever dream of having. Enjoy listening to music that is replicated over a thousand times a year.

  • I think the original of this song is better, but I love the cover of tiny cities

  • it's god damned boring!

  • i love both versions, but i prefer this one most of the time, it depends on my mood

  • Yea, modest mouse did write this. Good cover but I definitely prefer the original. I think the mood of the original is intentionally carefree, yet sad in a Modest Mouse way; whereas this just takes the lyrics and tries to add a different tone to the meaning.

  • didnt Modest Mouse write this?? this band kinda ruined it

  • wow

  • Tarkovsky - the mirror beautiful....

  • by far my fave song from them

  • It puts NO emphasis on the lyrics and they just made all the songs sound a like and really boring.

There is a DRASTIC difference in quality.

  • who made the vid?

  • I did!

  • Wow you got some talent. That was good.

  • this album is incredible, i highly recommend it. It puts more emphasis on MM's lyrics.

  • No it doesn't. Fuck no.

  • love this version...the lyrics are just sooo good!!!

  • first off, if you havnt heard the modest mouse one GO AND LISTEN TO IT RIGHT NOW. I do think the original is better but this is still a beautiful rendition. I like the way he sings the verses a lot.

  • I love both versions. The original from Modest Mouse is full of irony, as if there is a loss and there is anger over it. Emphasis seems to be on the lyrics "you get away from me". The Sun Kil Moon version is about sadness, with emphasis on the lyrics "you wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death.." Same lyrics, different emotions, both brilliant!

  • I really don't like this one. :(

  • Tarkovsky and Koselek! You, sir, have exquisite taste and your choice of images is inspired. Thank You.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, this is really different. I can't exactly say I like it since I prefer the original. I like the pace of it more. This is too slow for me.

  • I love this song. Haven't heard Modesty Mouse, maybe that would have ruined it?! But it is what it is and I LOVE this.

  • go listen to MM right now. all of their songs. right now

  • Thanks for uploading this. Covers can be amazing when the person covering the song puts their own take on it, and it's rare when they can make something entirely different but as good or even better. Love this cover.

  • I personally don't peticularly care for this cover of Ocean Breathes Salty. Though in no way do I feel Sun Kil Moon ruined Modest Mouse or the song.

For me Modest Mouse's sort of surreal mix of nostalgia and compassion is what really made their song. That and the lead singer's voice seemed perfect to deliver it.

I think Kozeleks is a great singer but his version of the song is a little too suttle for my taste, compared to the original is seems a little lacklustered.

  • I'm not gonna lie, I haven't heard much from modest mouse. Therefore I really couldn't say if there original versions were better then Kozeleks. However, if all he did was redo the production I can atleast say that Modest Mouse are some pretty damn good song writers. As far as this song goes and the kat that did the video for it I must say that it's a very calm and fitting picture that you've given to the song. The song? what can't you say about this song, very pretty, very deep. Good job!

  • Get over it.

  • Thanks for uploading theses terr0rkitten. It's much appreciated. I've got all the albums but I'm loving the visuals to match.

  • Thanks for taking the trouble to comment.

  • yes because emo people like slow paced acuistic songs.

  • Really splendid.

  • I'm a huge Modest Mouse and Mark Kozelek fan and I think this is a beautiful rendition of Ocean Breathes Salty.

He's covering Modest Mouse songs and making them his own not "ruining" them. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. Simple.

  • Good song, that one is...

  • Thank you for looking Jan.
