  • I've just found this, what took me so long I wonder. Just one word.... Stunning!

  • I keep coming back to this film and continue to marvel at it. It's a brilliant creation. I hope you can complete your project.

  • Fantastic.

  • Excellent video. I live on the strand and often wonder what it would be like if the dockers umbrella still existed today

  • It takes me back to my childhood. Please more it is a great job well done.

  • This is incredible. Well done!

  • Thats amazing

  • brilliant piece of work

  • This is really excellent - and so well put together, truly evocative of the old Overhead and a fantastic simulation of the real thing.

  • Beautiful. Thank you.

  • Really good work, imaginative and artistic use of CGI. Those in positions of authority in Liverpool (particularly museums) should commission you or buy permissions to use your work. Excellent - good luck with all your future projects.

  • I continue to marvel at this. Thank you, Steve.

For many, the benefit of the LOR was that it let you look over the high walls surrounding the Dock Estate. In fact, a memorable sight in my young life was in 1953 when my train passed Gladstone Dock where the burned-out hulk of the liner "Empress of Canada" {all of 600 ft. in length} lay on its side.

I hesitate to suggest any change to your work, Steve, but it might be enhanced by the inclusion of a short piece showing the passengers' outlook.

  • Thanks Ovie,

With regards to the Empress, I think some things are best left to the imagination. There are many interviews in the documentary where people recall their memories of the 'Empress'. I have photographs and I am looking into copyright laws regarding the use of them in the film.

There is footage out there shot by Alexander Promio of the views outside the carriage, I beleive this will be shown in the Museums upcoming exhibition.

  • I wasbowled over by this: by both the atmosphere and the detail, and by the matching of music and images.

I suppose no film-maker envisages his work finding its way to a museum, but I think that this video would make the ideal accompaniment to the Overhead-Railway display being installed in the new Liverpool Museum, { particularly as the museum building is so close to those famous structures depicted in the film}.

  • Thanks again,

I have presented this work to Richard Koeck who is closely associated with the upcoming Overhead Railway exhibition at the Mueseum. He is not interested in this work or the documentary film.

  • @stevenpw That's a real shame the people of Liverpool need to see this, the old footage is good but this brings it to life and gives a real impression of a first hand view. lovely work so glad you made it.

  • Beautiful.

  • Hi Steven,

What an amazing piece of work. You have clearly done very detailed research for this.

I especially like the "views" looking toward the old Goree warehouses - the animation gives a much better impression than any of the static images we see.

I also like your choice of the Chopin as an accompaniment - it has just the right nostalgic atmosphere for these scenes.

    Best regards,

    Nigel

  • A labour of love. Excellent, and probably the best "footage" we'll ever get of this engineering feat

  • I've sent this link to everyone.......fantastic, I'm seriously impressed, keep up the good work.

    Neil

  • Outstanding and beautiful work SPW.

    Rob

  • OMG that is stunning!

  • I showed my Liverpool born and raised mother this and she was most impressed. She remembers the "cattle truck" rolling stock fondly and the outcry at its demolition. Having claimed that the railway was structurally unsound those responsible for its demolition found it too solid to knock down and had to use explosives. This attracted no small measure of scorn.

Don't forget the trams or the MD&HB railway which ran under the Overhead.

  • I really appreciate the work that you've put into this. It's a remarkable piece of work which deserves wide recognition.

  • Like ''collo1949'' - I too travelled on the LOR, and remember it being noisy and dirty - but what a loss to the city, it's closure.

  • Superb work, would you upload a 720p version?

  • @IvanMorgan1966

Sorry Ivan, there isn't a 720p version yet.

  • I was 7 when the last train ran in 1956 I remember it well. How time muddles the brain, I remember it being very dirty and noisy. Having said that I wish it was still with us now, perhaps it was taken for granted 'til it closed. The sad part is, apart from a few young fellas like myself, we are running out of people who knew it best, the dockers who went to work on it & took their kids to the Pier Head on it. The council should have paid the £2mill to keep it open, the Victorians would have!!

  • This is excellent, Steve, thanks for sharing! I take stills, old tickets and stuff of the L.O.R. in as memory prompts to groups in Liverpool and they're great to get the memories flowing -I'll tell people about your link if that's O.k.?

    Love the music- s-o-o-o soothing!

  • Brilliant,

Do you have anything we might be able to use for the documentary film ? Would you like to take part ? It sounds like you may have something very good to add to the film.

  • Showed it to my father, 82, he was amazed.

He reckons you should put some horse and carts into the scenes.

    Gtreat work.

  • Great. I agree about the horse and carts, these things all take time. I will say that this is meant to represent how it looked during the 50's, and I'm not sure if they still used them at that time.

Ask him if he wants to be in documentary.

  • well in Ste,,,excellent ...i kno its work in progress,,,heard ya on radio merseyside ...im 42 so dont remember it but me ol' fella does ...ian in Maghull

  • what a shame it had to be taken down,it would be great for tourism if we still had it today.great video too the music goes well with it.

  • Excellent! Thanks for coming in on the show. Hope you get great feedback. Tony Snell

  • Very well done, brought back some great memories. The Overhead ran along the back of our house,I lived on Grafton Street in Dingle. We had great fun on it during school holidays. Thanks, Jim

  • @grafton222

I'm looking for real people with real memories of the Overhead for my documentary. If your interested, or anyone reading this is interested in taking part in the film please let me know.

I want to preserve these memories and put them on film so they last forever. Thats the whole point of the film in a nutshell.

  • @stevenpw

HI i would be delighted to tell you my memories of the Overhead. Contact me on 07813091710.

    Cheers,Jim

  • Thanks Jim....I'll be intouch soon.

  • @stevenpw

Hi Steve,I was wondering how you where progressing with the dvd you are making about The Overhead. You may remember you came to visit me for this project. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards,Jim 070610

  • @grafton222

Hi Jim, I'm still working on it and have a long way to go. There is a blog page on the main site where you can keep up to date with how it is progressing.

  • I can't seem to post a link to the website, send me an email and I'll email you back with the details.

    Cheers,

    Steven.

  • Excellent work. Look forward to viewing the finished article.

    Well done

  • brilliant, would love to see the dockers umbrella stil running, bad planning and design ruined the city from the 50s up until the 70s, some would debate its still happening now, thanks though.

  • Clever. Well done.

  • Stunning Steve!

  • Nice work!
