God that man can act.. That is the most chilling performance of that aria I've heard and seen since Cornell McNeil sang it in the Met broadcast. I have a tape of that performance. I would dearly love to see the complete performance with Gobbi. He is unbelievable.
I would really want to know wether there are any dvd's available... I know, that a dvd is not like a real opera in a real opera house, but still.... I cannot go 350x a month to our opera, it's expensive and they don't play Il tabarro and Tosca very often... :(
I think MacNeils is second only to Gobbi as Scarpia, though I saw Tosca from the Met this afternoon and was generally imporessed by George Gagnidze's Scarpia
Hey, you're right ^.^ I do not know Robert Merrill, but let's see, maybe I can find something on youtube.... I just start to discover and learn about Il Tabarro. A very nice opera, I have bought the CD with Gobbi as Michele and Margaret Mas, which is a very nice recording.
Gobbi was fantastic in this role, and left us a memorable complete rceording. No other baritone got inside a character quite the way he did; he even made Sharpless interesting! Operating with a less than first class and often ugly voice, he nevertheless always convinced me; indeed, I can't hear many phrases from operas in any other way than the way he did them.
Gobbi was the Italian Equivalent of our very own Lawrence Tibbett! The only thing missing for me in his singing is the finishing high notes in the end of these arias. He doesn't shoot 'em out like Basiola, Stracciari or even Bastianini:( He keeps these notes sorta inside & sometimes at worst it tends to sound flat or pitchy:( He was very big on COVERING. He's one of the few Baritones that do cover quite early(it's to protect that voice)This is also where Tibbett differs from him. Tibbett is open
Incredible!!! A very unbeautiful voice but one that brings tears and heartbreak. He is also the most amazing Scarpia! No one can use voice like his as he does...actually, no one has a voice like that. WOW
I agree...but I use the words "unbeautiful" because it is so unique. He just tears my heart out. His Scarpia in incredible, as is his heartbreaking "perche non l'aime piu" from Il Tabarro. Excuse the spelling. (for Juliette)
Oh my ! Where does this jewel come from ? Hyperexpressive, but every note is under control ! Great actor and a tremendous voice - pure beauty despite the horrifying setting. Makes me think that "Il Tabarro" may be more than only a good opera !
Not one of the most beautiful voices but one of the most dramatic and expressive I've ever heard. I've never heard him sing anything but the Tosca scene with Callas. WOW, he's mesmerizing
It kind of sucks that this is a "rare" talent in opera. I wish singers would work on their acting just as much as their singing. This is my first time seeing/hearing this singer and you're right, he seem to have the whole package.
A great rarity! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS! Gobbi was a consummate singing actor, totally inside every role he ever performed or recorded. No matter what you may think of the sound of his instrument, you cannot deny what I said. He brought his characters to life in ways that most other singers don't even consider; he even made SHARPLESS interesting!

Despite vocal shortcomings, I'd rather gear Gobbi as almost any character in opera! What great characterizations & stage presence!!!

Of course, tastes differ, but I just can't make out why some people (and not few) don't like his voice. It's so rich, deep and soft!

Gobbi had the rare talent of actor and singer combination. Just watch his expression in face and
body movements. All his characters he played came to
life before your eyes. He was dramatic and engrossing
to watch. Look at him in Act II of Tosca 1964 at
Convent Garden with Callas. He had a unique voice
which could give you shivers just watch him as Scarpia.
