It's great that the developer came and fixed the old Levittown Shopping Center, but now we have a new shopping center that's DOUBLE IF NOT ALMOST TRIPLE THE SIZE OF THE ORIGINAL ONE!!!!! It doesn't make any sense!! How many Wal-Marts & Petsmart's does one area need?!?!?!
I would of loved to see how Levittown was like after it was first completed. I think Levittown, PA is a perfect representation of what happens to an area after people stop caring. Most people just sit and wait for the township
Malvina Reynolds was writing about a different kind of development than Levittown when one listens to the verses. "And the people in the Houses all went to the university".... "and drink their martinis dry" aren't part of the basic Levittown experience... mostly blue collar workers, happy with a cold beer. Levit built different models to avoid the sameness one sees in other developments even more pronounced. It's a catchy song but Malvina's real purpose in writing it is clearly different..
hahahah.... the part with the dramatic music and then it freezes on the "POOPY" graffiti. this is so weird... Levittown, NY looked just like this maybe 15-20 years ago before a lot of the houses were updated. village greens were burnt out and abandoned back then too, it's actually gotten somewhat nicer though. never thought i'd see that...
we moved into levittown in 1990. we lived on evergreen lane in elderberry. at that time it still had that 1950s flare to it but it was neat. we moved out after i graduated pennsbury in 1998. we moved to fairless hills its nice but i still miss levittown i truly do. "isolif nam" reverse it and you get my nickname i had at pennsbury. god bless you everyone may peace be with you...
yeah i remember the shopping center. and i miss it though it was worn down by the time the 21s century came along. it had cracked pavements and some areas bulging up potholes everywhere and mostly empty stores some with ceilings caved in or holes in the floor and/or both. however we soon forget what once stood a modern masterpiece of it's era. now it is just a memory.
I lived in Levittown my whole life and maybe moving away soon. I have a lot of memories of this town. As a filmmaker, I got to say I really enjoyed your video.
Ironic that this is the first suburb white people were running towards to get away from black people and now, to a degree, they're being treated like n*ggers (and I use that term deliberately as a white psychotic projection onto blacks, and not as a description of black people) by careless developers, people wanting to leave the neighborhood and the like.
@cooldan11 It's not so much Capitalism. The working class can't make it anymore, our factories have been outsourced and every other job takes special skills. We need tariffs and to end this world economy crap.
@ILVRACN Yea, then other countries we trade with will erect tarrifs, and we will not be able to sell our crap. Tariffs would be the worst thing for the economy.
I liked the movie. For 8 minutes it was put together nicely. And yeah Levittown was a dump but it's cleaning itself up now. Even if it wasn't it'd be fine. There's a lot of great people here you know I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to grow up here. Furthermore comparing Bristol Township as Harlem is kind of ridiculous
For the time the movie was created, I agree that the shopping center was a piece of crap that reflected poorly on the town - but these were nearly all shots of Bristol Township, which is certainly NOT indicative of Levittown as a whole.
Showing just Bristol and saying it's Levittown is like showing just Harlem and saying it's NYC.
yea i didnt see any shots of Middletown Twp such as Cobalt Ridge, Forsythia, Upper and Lower Orchard, Snowball, Juniper Hill, Red Rose or the Deep Dales
It wasn't until I moved away that I realized how much of a dump the whole area really is. I did have a blast growing up there, so I guess it could have been worse.
I lived in L-Town until I moved away to go to college. I must say you don't realize what a sh#thole that place is until you get away from it. I had a great time growing up there, but I will never live in that area again.
Levittown, PA. Where the American Dream grew up, raised a large family, and died. One day they may build a memorial to it, by building it into a shining example of suburban life. I was happy to see Shawn, not happy to still see him there.
Born and raised in Levittown/Fairless hills. The older you get the more u really appreciate this area. There isn't another place in Bucks County I'd choose to live. GO PHILLIES!!!!!
Ah, there is nothing like forced conformity to spread malecontent. I'm a young person, and since i hit the age of 8, my resentment of the area has continued to grow. I'm from colbalt ridge, and do not take pride in the mediocrity of the existance of so many people. People should not live in little boxes, yet they do. In levittown, graduation of high school and an assiociate degree from Bucks os considered a sound way to live life. I ask: Where is the american drive? The constant asking for more?
Dude, Levittown Owns. It really does, there isn't much wrong with it. You'll find adult stores and dilapidated buildings pretty much everywhere you go.
I'm sorry that you're malcontent. You could move though, if you really dislike it that much. We won't force you to stay.
Thanks for reminding us all of the problems of globalization and corporatism. Very nice filmet. I hope you can find some funding and create an in-depth documentary. Including solutions to our downward trend to the bottom. I left in 1975 after graduating from Delhaas. I hope Levittown pulls itself together to survive as a vibrant healthy society. Much Luck and Thanks For Showing Truth!!!
i no that guy in the red jacket walking the basset hound he lives across the road from my cousin in mill creek... im very proud to call levittown home...
lol i thought this video was hylarious. Dont worry about uneducated people throwing out meaningless insults... namely the Levittown police department. lol. God memories. If you would happen to have a copy of this id gladly pay for a dvd of it.
This does bring back so many memories. I'm still a resident but I miss levittown shopping center... lol ok no i dont. it was good to skate. In anycase great vid thanks.
brings back sooo many old mem's. i have grew up here still live here awsome place old shopping center isnt there lol home depot is its the jackass who wont fucking build ne thing there and theres a walmart and a dress for less comming now to and the bank is there and Taco Bell and the levittown lake is awsome lol ha the pipe is like the best place to fish at well c ya everyone btw this is Nick Radyshewsky Jr if you wanted to know lol hahaha
The "ONE dirty movie store"??? Take a drive down Route 13. :)
I wonder how the Levitt family feels about Bristol Township allowing an adult book store to be called "Levitt Books."
The Levittown Shopping Center was an abomination. If anyone has any information about its recent history (for example, the reason why Tullytown Township allowed the developer to let it rot away), please let me/us know.
Yeah you taped some of the crappy places of town, but during the winter it's somewhat that depressing all around. Quality of life here...hm, if you get a job outside of town you'll be somewhat better off. But it's amazing here during the springtime.
Like looking at my twin. I'm from Levittown, NY, and Levittown, PA, is laid out in the same style. The streets are identical, the curves in the streets are identical, and, of cours, the houses identical. Spooky.
yea levittown isnt as shitty as the way in the video. its just the shopping center was bad but it was nice back in the day. more better parts could have been shown.
that was a pretty harsh view of levittown. but im going to assume it was intended like that because it was filmed in the late fall or winter, when the town is at its worst.
and why is this pretty much all in Bristol?
The levittown shopping center is gone. torn down and theres a large ugly scar where it used to be.
honestly, i am living in central PA now it feels like hicktown USA
go west past philly and you will know what i mean.
interesting video though, i liked the 50s oldskool voiceover.
I grew up in Levittown. It's not as nice as it was when I was a kid. Your footage is a bit misleading, though. A lot of the dilapidated buildings you show were soon torn down and replaced with new shopping centers.
most have still not been replaced. at the moment, Levittown Shopping Center has a Home Depot on one end, a Taco Bell and bank on the opposite end, and what looks like the aftermath of a nasty hurricane elsewhere. the grandest improvement in recent years: fences! also, i think those shops on Emilie Road may still be abandoned.
The shops on Emile Road were bought by the owner of Georgines Restaurant in Bristol. They are in the process of rebuilding. Last I heard from a good source is a pool hall will go up.
you did a good job but i'm from levittown and i think you could have showed more of the better parts of levittown rather than the low parts. you sort of make it look trashy. just an opinion. :)
Well of course he made it look "trashy". This video wasn't made by the Levittown Visitors and Tourism Bureau. Once again, the vast majority of you have completely missed the point of the video. I for one found it to be very telling, and profound. Those of you with no sense of irony are symptomatic of the underlying problems in Levittown, and in many many other suburban tract house communities across the country.
do you really think so? Any DVD or video by a Convention Center or a Tourism Bureau can be filled with shots to make even Newark, NJ appealing. I really enjoyed the 20 years that I spent growing up in the Indian Creek section of Bristol Twp. but it was very white and no blacks or Jews - every blue collar profession was represented in my "section" of Indian Creek but there were no blacks, gays or Jews!I'm hearing now that some Levittown houses are selling for $250K and that is amazing!

So biased and predictable.
1. Start off making the place look nice, with interviews of people on the street saying how nice it is.
2. Show a shopping cart someone stuffed in a wooded area/creek
3. Shoot video outside the one dirty movie store.
And so on. Some high school students did the exact same thing with my hometown. Except they used a tripod.
