Between Carson, the Huntley-Brinkley Report and some other broadcasts, about all they did was smoke on the air prior to 1980. The anti-smoking crowd rules the world these days.
Although an independent station,. KTXL did get some national/world items on film from a cooperative (I think it was called ITVN) which served non-network TV stations with newsfilm, for which they leased landlines for a half-hour each evening.

@thatmuse76 Yes, back then things were a lot different considering the fact I was around 6 years old then. But the news was more professional and more serious and yet relaxed at the same time. Odd combo. My fave news anchor is Jessica Savitch. She was wonderful during her tenure.

Smoking on the air back then was acceptable on talk-shows and the evening news. You will NOT see that ANYWHERE on the air today!!!

strange to see news without all the TV Chroma keys and word craw at the bottom or the ID Bug like they do now. The Tv Screen was Clean! Neat.
