@kaimelis maybe in some cases, but as vehicles get older than 15 years old and clock over 100,000mi, rust, suspension, electronic, transmission and engine repairs can run into the thousands to make a vehicle road worthy again. This is why they are crushed, picked apart and recycled. A car is worth way more in parts than as a whole even as brand new.

Those cylinders are double acting cylinders.  In other words pressure can be applied to either side.

its weird though that the cilinders arent put upside down...when a cilinder expands it is stronger then the other way like on this crusher. because the cilinder has a larger volume on the other side then on the side it is using now...the shaft of the cilinder takes up space in the cilinder were hydraulic oil is pumped in.. there is less volume so it also has less power...i wonder who engineered that thing...:S

it would,  the same cilinders that push are stronger then the ones that pull. it only needs a bit diffrent construction to mount them. my fault because i didnt explained it too well =P so it needs a construction so it can push instead of pulling. doh :D

no, it dont rock side to side to drain the fluids. It rocks side to side cause of the force of the lid moving up and down (that's alot of pressure in that machine, all just sitting on a trailer frame for a semi). The fluids are all drained before the car(s) get crushed (so that their is no explosions or fires).
