  • Saluton el Aŭstralio

  • Good, young and humorous! Prezidento Espreranto Societo de Novjorko: Esperanto-un.

  • I love how incredibly voiced your z sounds are...

  • INCUBUS: the film almost disappeared but they found a copy in an art-house with French sub-titles. They covered up the French to make English sub-titles but that resulted in the biggest sub-titles a movie screen has ever seen! Shatner spoke BAD Esperanto in it, with a heavy French accent he picked up from learning French in his hometown of Montreal. His syllable-stress is wrong and Instead of saying "sen" (without) he said "sans" like in French.

  • why not learn Latin first? That's what I did and it has kind of helped me with Klingon!

  • @twiztidlynnette The reason Esperanto is great as a first 2nd-language study is because it's so easy. Nearly every word carries its grammatical identity in the ending, and makes you more grammar-conscious. One study separated a class into two groups, teaching in the first year French to Group A and Esperanto to Group B, then in the second year a second year of French to A, FIRST year of French to B. When the class was recombined, guess who did better in French? It was B!

  • If you're ever in Seattle check out the public library. Not only is a fantastically beautiful piece of architecture, they also have an entire section of books written in, or more likely translated into Esperanto. Looking for The stories of Winnie the Pooh in Esperanto, check.

Anyway, I'm a new subscriber and I've been thoroughly enjoying your videos Dan! Thanks for giving the Internet some awesome.

  • Funny, while procrastinating on writing a book review for a memoir of someone who learned this language. I love when things I'm doing connect randomly!

  • Bonega filmeto! Via entuziasmo klare travideblas.

Demandintoj pri esperanto-lernrimedoj provu la senpagajn memstudajn kursojn de la retejo Lernu.net. Komencu per "Ana Pana", kaj sekve per "Gerda Malaperis".

Great video! Your enthusiasm really comes through.

For those who asked about how to learn Esperanto, try the free self-study courses at Website Lernu.net. Start with "Ana Pana", followed by "Gerda Malaperis".

  • It's Romance languages, not romantic! And English and German are certainly not members of those.

I recently subscribed to you after a friend sent me a link to this video. it is very well done, and in the way you speak, I can hear your inspiration and your hope.

  • What a cool idea!

But English and German aren't Romantic languages. They're Germanic languages.

  • What does the description say? We can work out most of it but really want to know :)

  • @granddaughterSUSAN in which I speak] to you about esperanto and doctor Zamenhof and how much I love you.

his grammar wasn't perfect by any means, but it makes enough sense.

  • You aren't supposed to be selling languages, you're supposed to be selling used cars.

  • I've always had a secret liking for Esperanto!

  • Okay also crazy i saw a play at the Oregan shakespear festival where they did a show that had esperanzo in it!

  • I definitely spent a large chunk of time during finals week looking at the wikipedia page for esperanto :) Hey, maybe you could teach us all esperanto, but in tiny segments? It could be like a slightly-secret code for your viewers

  • Gratulojn pro la brila prezento. Mi ne bone komprenas la anglan sed bonege komprenis vin. Vi bonege interesigas homojn, se fidi la nombron da komentoj !

  • ESPERANTO. :D

  • Oh and then the French invaded too and gallicized the language too, of course. Sorry to be pedantic. I'm just a nerd that way. Great vid!

  • I really liked this video so I'm really sorry to complain, but you're wrong about what are Romantic languages. French, Italian, Spanish etc are all Romatic because they evolved from Latin, but English, German and the Scandinavian languages etc are all Germanic languages because they evolved from Common Germanic (this used to be called Teutonic) and they only bear a resemblance to Romantic languages because after the Roman invasion of Britain the English language started using the Roman aphabet!

  • omg my great-grandma's aunt was married to Dr Zamenhof!!! No joke! We have an Esperanto dictionary in our house but I can't say i know any :(

  • Someone recently told me I should learn esperanto when I said I wanted to pick up a hobby. I think I will now. Also, did doing that to your whiteboard take longer than you thought it would? I wrote MEGA on my giant white board and it took forever to fill in and I got a little dizzy afterwards. I am now out of red marker.

  • Aww, mi ami vi ankaux! ^_^

  • I was distracted by the changing board. (:

  • what is happening the BOARD IN THE BACKGROUND???? OMG!!!!!

I now want to learn this language and teach it to my non existent children so they can grow up to become masterminds and ultimately take over and rule the world, then quarrel with each other fighting to individually gain power until the whole thing crumbles, they are murdered and statues are erected in their memory.

That's right, I wrote erected and giggled as I was writing it.

  • Oh that's awesome, I've heard of Esperanto before on QI. I think that all I can say is hello. Saluton!

  • Intelligence! (... relieved sigh) !!! Subscribed my friend!!! Fill this brain with knowledge (manic, and ever so slightly evil, bad-guy-laughter) muhahaha!! Cool trick with the white board btw, subliminal msging to take our pants down... right? (sheepish grin), well, that's what I got from it... (hiccup!) :) Seriously though, good stuff - I look forward to seeing what you've done in the past, and of course what's to come. This is what YouTube's all about. John Aston. Bath, England.

  • I HAVE JUST MET YOU...AND I LOVE YOU! But in all seriousness, you're pretty freaking awesome. Keep on keepin on.

  • did anyone notice the board in the background? lol

  • @DanRezler

Subscribed via godsteeth. She's right, you are somewhat worshipable :D.

This was really interesting. Genuinely never even heard of Esperanto. Also, I love statistics like "between 10000 and 2 million". XD

Finally, I laughed at the idea of German as a Romantic language haha.

  • Hello John Green, what's that new anti-wrinkle cream you're using?

  • You definitely deserve like 100000 other subscribers...at least. :)

  • sent here by godsteeth1911...and subbed

  • @TheBefalse Same. :)

  • did anyone else notice the flag being drawn on his white board?

  • Educational and awesome!! You're like a young John Green!

  • And for you who want to learn Esperanto. Try to google: Lernu.net

  • While I love the thought of a common language (then we could see the end of the "This is Amurica! We speak ENGLISH." argument) I also believe in the importance of saving the world's languages that are quickly disappearing. Unique languages, while they do hold us apart, also hold keys to diverse cultures.

My two year "foreign" language in college is Lakota Sioux. Because I am a nerd.

  • Bonege! Dankon.

  • Cxiukaze.... mi kredas ke la gxusta titolo esperanto estus: "la revO dE la Doktoro"

  • Interesa Video...

    :-D

  • love how the whiteboard changes

  • I still want the complimentary carrying case...

  • Assuming the title is in esperanto, I can see why it would be a good starting point for learning the romantic languages.

  • ...What's that flag in the background?

  • Esperanto is so freaking cool.

  • "A simplified version of romantic languages combined."

England and German aren't romantic languages, they're germanic.

  • That. Was. Awesome. I love these teaching videos. They make me feel smart.

  • Now I understand the line in a Marx Brothers' movie where Groucho mentions Esperanto. Thanks Dan.

  • Is the title in Ido as some kind of sick joke? Or did you just get it wrong? (It should be "La revo(j) de la Doktoro"

  • @aquatius5 *dissing Ido five*

  • @MogalyBogal Idistoj. Ili simple ne komprenas :P (moar like idiotistoj amirite)

  • Well, in correct esperanto the title of this video would be "La revo de la doktoro" but perhaps you write as quick as you speak and so I understand why there is an error in the title ! ;-)

  • My dad is a lover of foreign languages and is fluent (and used to teach) Esperanto. We even have about three Esperanto dictionaries at home, it’s very interesting. I showed him this video and he was impressed by your knowledge of the language.

  • Esperanto is now second on my list of languages I wish to learn. Because it would be awesome to learn the romantic languages :)

  • Just learn classical Latin! it's the basis of all those romantic languages!

  • I need to teach my son this.

  • Esperanto is a really interesting language! It's amazing that it's the only created language that has taken off to any significant degree (expect Klingon..but that's a bit of a different story).

You should read the book "In the Land of Invented Languages" by Arika Okrent - it's a great read and goes over the history of all sorts of created languages, including both Esperanto and Klingon.

  • DAN DAN DAN I LOVE YOU.

  • i spent the whole video watching the white board in the back :D

  • I guess the question is: How do I learn it?

  • I really enjoy the growing green blob in the background :)

  • ...i don't really like learning languages.....

in fact i was going to learn ancient civilisation instead of latin at school.....

until i found out that they choose for you and thought i would be good at greek aswell as latin...*sigh*....

life?, don't talk to me about life....

  • *eyeroll* Just learn Latin. It helps with ALL the Romantic languages.

  • I tried learning Esperanto on my own when I was 14. I didn't get very far... All I remember is how to say "kaj mi hundo." It's so very useful.

(Actually, it did help me when I took French in high school.)

  • HAPPY ONE YEAR BIRTHDAY!

Also, I'd like to learn that language now. You're a good salesman.

  • Awesome video. I couldn't help but stare at the white board the whole time. I love watching Dan Rezler videos because I learn something new every time!

  • You know.... half the time it almost sounded like you were talking about youtube...

  • Man, I'd really love to learn this language... do you know where I could? Like a website or book or something?

  • I love that your whiteboard is changing :)

  • LOL I put the description in Google Translate and it tells me: We are not yet able to translate from Esperanto into English.

I still ponder if this is good or bad...

  • Am I the only one who noticed the whiteboard?

  • The constant coloring on the white board was a bit distracting o.o

    But a great video nonetheless.

  • My great grandparents on my mothers side spoke Esperanto fluently (one was Polish Jew and the other was German Jew). I remember hearing Esperanto (plus other languages - these people knew many languages) spoken to me at a very young age, but unfortunately my great-grandparents died when I was very little.

  • I really enjoyed the white board...

  • MI PAROL ESPERANTO! Bone ... speco de. Mi estas vere perdinta ekzercitecon ĉar mi estas koncentriĝ pri aliaj lingvoj kiel Sveda. Ĉiaokaze mi amas Esperanton. Est-as bela lingvo. Estas tre facile lernebla. Mi lernis la fundamentojn post ne pli ol unu semajno kaj mi povus paroli ĝin preskaŭ flue ene de monato.

Forgive any mistakes. Like I said I'm really out of practice XD

  • A fourth or a twentieth... ? Just a bit of a difference...

  • you remind me of a younger version of John Green.

  • This was extremely fascinating. Now I'm going to Google the crap out of it.

  • new glasses? nice.

  • Interesting, I may look in to learning this!

  • WOW you're partner now? when did that happen? :O

  • Happy vlog anniversary! (Vlanniversary?)

  • My roommate speaks Esperanto fluently, I should ask her to teach me. I bet it's easier than my current undertaking of learning Russian...

  • Happy happy birthday from all of us to you we wish it was our birthday so we could party too HEY!

Also you sold me. How much money do I send and to where?

  • Oh, hey, look at the white board slowly being taken over ... XD

    Very cool video, Dan!

    And happy Vlog-iversary! :D

    - Jason

  • the white board! where can you learn Esperanto?

  • good vid. Very vlogbrothers-ish....hmmm

  • D'aww, Happy Youtube Birthday!

  • You went a bit crazy with the colour Green on your Whiteboard.

  • Happy, sort of channel birthday :d

  • Bona filmeto! Dankon!

  • So, you sold me the language... Where's my carrying case and cleaning kit?

  • *Hugs*

  • German and English are not romantic. They are germanic :)

  • I like the idea of changing the designs on the whiteboard throughout the video. :D

  • Jes! Esperanto, la lingvo internacia!

Ke la "Revo de la Doktoro" povu plenumiĝi!

  • En kiu mi paroli al vi cxirkaux esperanto kaj doktoro zamenhof kaj kiel multa mi ami vi? Google Translate! :)

  • oh thats another language to add to the list, I have to speak esperanto now

  • :O Ok I'mma learn esperanto now :D:D:D:D

Do you have any tips on where to start?

  • @mariannerrrd en.lernu.net

  • @ibotirasalitre thanks! i think i found the dutch version of that through google :)

  • The 1st time I've heard of this in the mid 90's and I was really excited. I was reading a SciFi book in which the people spoke Esperanto and I looked it up in our encyclopedia. Great concept but mankind isn't ready for it. Though your video inspired me to learn it. :)

(It would be awesome if Nerdfighteria would communicate in Esperanto. ;) )

  • Happy Anniversary

  • Esperanto is such a utopian and positivist concept. It just seems like the lack of any culture or identity within it makes it essentially a pure tool, which is really a bit dull. Happy videoversary!

  • I remember hearing about this on QI once, it's such a great idea and something the world badly needs. I have no idea why people aren't doing more to make it everybody's second language.

  • veistu íslenska er bara best!! (muhahaha try to find out what I said )

  • My parents met this guy whose job it was to promote the use of Esperanto in the Netherlands, when they were in Europe. My Mum asked him how his work was going, he sigh and said "Not well." If you can't get the Dutch to learn a language...

  • I love watching the board change in the background! Great video and happy 1 year. This was really interesting- my friend who is looking to earn a Masters degree in Linguistics also thought it was wonderful

  • Esperanto nice. But I must point out that English and German are not romantic languages. Romantic languages are based in Latin. English is often confused as a romantic language but it's root structure is actually Germanic in origin.

  • Ehiuet aligoiiyo ioywrkjkjasj awij!

(Betcha didn't know I was fluent)

  • @emilythebravee Since you're fluent, do you think you could translate the title and description?

    Kthxbai :D

  • I want to learn all languages. Can that be my super power?

  • @PanoramicLove Yes but you'll need a fatal flaw to overcome in the third act.

  • Kio estas gxi, mi fari ne ebena.

  • Thank you so much for posting all your videos! :)

  • If it's been a year since you've started making videos then it's been a year since VIDCON. That means conversation I have from here on out is probably going back to that. Which is why this comment is irrelevant.

  • What is the symbol on the white board? Is it a flag of this language??

  • @thecindylorraine Yes, it's the flag of Esperanto.

  • Wow. I want to learn Esperanto now. Can I get a rosetta stone? Hahah.

  • ever heard of gestuno? its the sign language version of esperanto. also very cool. most people think sign language is universal. lol

  • Esperanto, in my experience, has just generally died out as a study. And while I agree with the ideals behind it, it just doesn't seem to work out for the mere fact that not a whole lot of people speak it. Sure, ideally, everyone would speak Esperanto. But until that becomes a reality, it's just not as useful as a language. Also, the cultural biases a language carries help personify said language. It's linguistic terroir in action. :] I wouldn't rebuild Babel for anything.

    & Happy one year! :D

  • Diable ĝi, mi refreŝigis kaj konsciis min ne estis unua. Faceplam

  • I'd rather have a babel fish. Happy tubeversary.

  • Unua, Dio oni plezure estas unua.

  • If only I had esperanto in high school...then I wouldn't have had all that pain and suffering...well it was high school so the pain and suffering would have probably been there regardless buuuuuut...yeah. Happy 1 year anniversary!

  • I've taken Italian, French, and Spanish because I'm really interested in languages but it is really hard for me to learn them. I feel like esperanto would be super helpful.

Also, congrats on the youtube birthday!

  • My apartment-mate is an anthropology major/linguistics minor; She's super fascinated by Esperanto, so I get to hear lots about it when it comes up in her classes.

  • love the growing flag!
