These planes are a living legend, and we represent a lot, as it was with these fighter pilots of the 1st Brazilian Fighter Group of the Air Force, fought the Germans during World War II.
Really well-done tribute.. thank you!! My dad's best friend flew the P-47 in WWII. His squadron was shot down over Rangoon, Burma. He was he only one to return alive.
Great video. I hate admitting this but I almost get emotional watching this video and thinking about what those pilots and all servicemen did for us back then. Maybe it is just the addition of the background music or something I don't know, but great video!!
Those pilots look like expert shots! I cant even begin to imagine how hard it is to aim at a target going 200 mph straight towards the ground, having to compensate with ailerons, rudder and vertical stabilizer, working the throttle & feather prop, & dealing with the torque from the one-ton radial engine screaming in front of you... and then pulling the trigger, shooting with 8 50 cals. That mustve been something huh?
P-47 pilots were claiming to have destroyed hundreds of german tanks during Normandia campaign. Unfortunately for air force pilots, there is a small unit usually entitled Research and Analysis which enters a combat area once it is secured. This is and was common in most armies, and the US Army was no different.
They found that the air force’s claims did not match the reality at all. Only about 3-4% of those claims by pilots were actually truth. These P-47 pilots were some of the biggest liars.
@lbchuma They did have a big motor, yet on it's own the P-47 was too heavy to take off of an aircraft carrier alone. So they used a catapault, this gave the big fighter a burst off speed so it could get airborne and stay there after flying off.
The P-47 was probably one of the most amazing aircraft the USA ever built. Anyone would die of fright if they see an 8 ton prop. plane spitting .50 cal fire at you from 8 machine guns! Love this aircraft! And amazing video :)
@JSF747 Ironic, I'm getting one as well. I'm going to have one coming out of a victory v and a ribbon in front, not sure what text to put into the ribbon.
It was the P47 that broke the back of the Luftwaffe not the P51. The P47 was every bit a effective in a air-to-air role as the P38 or P51. The P47 was the first of what today is called a muti-role fighter. The P47M had a top speed of 472 mph. It's only drawback was fuel consumption.
I know a guy who was on a bombing run and as he tried to get back to base a flack cannon knocked oil all over his windshield and he was moving at half airspeed. He could still make it but...a BF-109 came up to his left wing. This messerschmit pilot had over 60kills Came up behind him fired 15 shots and he came back to his left wing. The P-47 pilot laid down on his knees praying to God that hed get out to see his family again. The BF-109 did this like 3 times and than he ran out of ammo and ran
It was a FW190 and the German was Igon Meyer who at that time had 66 kills the p47 took all the German could throw at him like you said and still made it home. the pilot was Robert S Johnson the second highest scoring American pilot in the European theater every time I think of that story it makes me proud to be from a country that cared that much about their pilots safety
Ha ha, very funny. My Dad attributes himself coming home because of his training and the fact he flew a Thunderbolt. Mustangs could not do the job the thunderbolts did.
@Mattessj I have never lost sight of the pilot being a factor. But an ACE in a Spad would certainly be at a disadvantage dogfighting with a rookie pilot in a P-47.

Woa, the Jug flew off boats?! A 16,000lb plane offa carrier without steam? that is a big motor.

lbchuma - That was the 318th Fighter Group - they launched off of the carriers and landed at an airfield on Saipan

has anyone heard the wwii pilots' joke about the thunderbolt? it needed a fighter escort 'til it reached 10,000 feet ~
an amazing aircraft ~ an excellent bomber escort and a superior dive bomber, stout as they come. and she could take staggering hits ~
thank you again funtimesteve ~

mustang was a superior air to air fighter, no questions act, but it wasnt anywhere as versatile as the p-47 and the p-38
but it was a much better air to air fighter.
Yamaha950 2 years ago
The Thunderbolt was just as potent a dogfighter as the Mustang.
TheSteamLocomotive 2 years ago 9
which is why the mustang was used in later wars right?

@TheSteamLocomotive
not really.

@Yamaha950 Yes, really. Check the stats if you don't believe me.

@Yamaha950 The P-47 was faster, more heavily armed and much more rugged than the P-51.

@TheSteamLocomotive it was all pilot....
Mattessj 8 months ago
@Mattessj If it was all pilot, then why did they use airplanes?
TheSteamLocomotive 8 months ago
@TheSteamLocomotive it was the better pilot that won dogfights... not the better plane
Mattessj 8 months ago
@Mattessj Sooo, the airplane had nothing to do at all with the outcome of the dogfight?
TheSteamLocomotive 8 months ago
@TheSteamLocomotive its the pilot that makes the difference...the plane does too but its the more experienced at the controls that wins....
