You need to learn to rocket jump correctly if you want to be a good soldier. You can use the gunboats and still sodomize, but because you don't have the shotgun you won't have that finisher for enemies with low health. I use the shotgun and rocket jump a lot anyway, because I stay near health and teammates, especially medics.
