Lauren left the Hills because she is successful and wants to do something other than reality TV with her life.

Kristin came back to Reality TV because she has nothing else going for her. She tried acting and she sucks at it. This is all that is left for her to do. When the Hills ends because nobody wants to watch it now that Lauren is gone Kristin will be nobody.
