You idiots. He's using an old flip phone. Like a nokia 6500. Their screens are not sealed like today's smartphones. He flipped it open and like most of those old nokias, the screen failed to light immediately thus igniting the fumes once his had was in the tank and screen finally activated.
Cell phones causing explosions is an absolute myth, totally busted on Mythbusters who TRIED to do this with a cell phone even when surrounding them with fumes. Clearly a lighter was used, which makes this guy the dumbest and luckiest mofo alive.
There's reasons why cellphone use is banned from handling sensitive materials like gas and chemicals in other industry fields. It can very well happen.
But in this video I have to say that was a lighter, it's been done before, and yes some of those gas drivers are THAT stupid to take a lighter to see, there are other youtube videos of them using lighters to see into the tank.
Additionally, rather that simply stating it is real or it is a myth -- though I appreciate the references to Google and Snopes -- but it's also worth reading this report, a white paper about this very, almost legendary, phenomenon:
kent.ac.uk/scarr/events/finalpapers/burgess.pdf
Food for thought. Remember: don't blindy believe things simply because they are on the internet. The net and email are the reasons these tales are so prolific.
There are a few unknowns here like was it really a cell/mobile phone he drew from his pocket. If so, why? What else could it have been? What was he doing on top of a tanker in a garage?
Mythbusters did indeed debunk the mobile phone in a controlled way. The container was flooded with petroleum gas i.e. not just the liquid, rather the combustable vapour. The phone did nothing. They were unable to prove the static shock; however, they did show a video of a static shock spark igniting the gas.
This may or may not be a mobile phone but there is a definite risk of auto ignition of gaseous vapours caused by a mobile phone. This is why phones are banned on the refinery where I work. This is not an urban legend.
The static charge may not ignite fuel directly, but the vapour it gives off is another story! Don't put things like this to chance. I work in a garage, you're being a fool to yourself if you want to try and argue that it is an urban ledgend. It's safety 101.
man! he falls right off the tanker onto the ground on fire boom! then as he's rolling around he ignites that tube thats laying to the side and it starts puffing flames.... crazy.
It's not the ringing of the phone that causes the explosion: it's the static generated when he answers. With the vapour from the tanker, the whole lot goes up instantly. The myth busting experiment messed up in that it's not the phone activity, but the user's activity.Theoretically, if your cellphone rings and you don't answer, you're OK. But the natural instinct is to answer, and hence the signs.
u guys stating that u have seen this hoax tested and ended up busted was not the same as the situation here...
some even stated that the car was soaked in petrol but it did not blow up...
what lacks ur test is pressure...
i dare you to point cellphones to gas stations underground tanks...
that should do it...
the tanker was full of pressured fumes the time before he opened it or even after he opened it so when he opened it pressure is released and with fone boom!
The guy is an idiot you are never supposed to go on top of the tanker anymore not even after a delivery, but he thought that shell might not be giving him the correct amount of fuel so went to dip the tanker. He died two days after this accident from his burns.
that is not a loading bay its a garage the tanker is not earthed static could be the cause.the man in white is not a re fueller .the driver should not have let him up top he looks like the garage hand.
who EVER said that a cell phone dose not make anything explode!!!!!!go to school and get a class about !!! i drive 4 shell north america!! and we go to about 30 class about this !!!!so next time anybody says it cant happen!!!!go get en education!!!! dummys!!!!! u r stupid kelly2357
@jimmy9513 I am not joking, this really is an urban legend. It has been spread around so much that if has become almost true legend, the fact is that mobile phones have NEVER caused a gas station explosion, Please google "snopes mobile phone gas" and you will see what I mean....
@Kelly2357 : Cell phone can cause ignition!!! although not every time but accidentally!!!! as it produce Electromagnetic waves which may charge the particles and cause small spark!!!! Im HSE Advisor by profession!!! and we do tell our workers not to take there cell phone while handling with fuel!!!!
@marwatjunaid I am not joking, this really is an urban legend! It has been spread around so much that if has become almost true legend. The true fact is - No mobile phones in history has even been proven to have caused a gas station fire.
Please google "snopes mobile phone gas" or "Facts About Cell Phones and Fires at Gas Stations" ... and you will see what I mean about an urban legend gone wrong!
@Kelly2357 well regarding ur statement, that mobile phone cant ignite any thing!!!! ya its true that DIRECTLY, in cant!!!! but the thing is.... it can produce static charge!!! may be there isnt any record incident about fuel station on fire!!!! but i do have an example regarding damage made by cell phone!!!!
@Kelly2357 as i told u that im Safety Officer @ Seismic service provider company in oil field!!! we have to use Dynamite and detonators to produce seismic waves in Ground! n our 1 worker died during loading detonator in ground! just bcz of the explosion and that exploded just after his cell rings!!!! secondly its also mentioned in IAGC(International Association of Geophysical Contractor) Manual that ( This may cause static or subsequent possible ignition of the fuel) n its ISO recognized
You are so true here, but money talks, make people use their fucking phones as much as possible and make more money, even so by changing the reality and truth.
@marwatjunaid You're claim is completely baseless. No explosions caused by cell phones have been confirmed, and many have tried to force this to happen without any success.
holy shit! I was told its a cell phone by those who use this video to tell you cell phones cause explosions like this. But you can't really see in the video.
@gibboxin don't be ridiculous. Only someone with a death wish would even dream of taking a lighter on top of a tanker like that, let alone taking it out and actually lighting it.
For the one person putting a negative statement on my statement. It is true in some countries the safety level is lower than in other countries. It is a fact of life!
Go travel a bit of the world and find out yourself.
Could have been static?? More likely than a phone causing spark. The guy was on fire but should be ok with the quick help from the other guy. Hope he was ok eventually.
I read on another copy of this that the bloke died 2 days later and it took place in Brazil. How true this is i have no idea. I first saw this video when i did an induction at Conoco.
fuck off you thick wankers. they did a test on this on tv, then put petrol all around a car, in a car, EVERYWHERE.
Then they put over a hundred mobile phones or "cellphones" around it, and rang then all at once, and guess what shitbrains, no explosion!!! u cant strike petrol with a shitty phone light, or the sun would do it all the time muppets.
If it happenend to you only ONE time would do it! By that I mean the chance something happening is remote but IT IS REALLY there. The same goes for static electricy.
I am a tanker truck driver. This is why we turn off cellphones when discharging fuel... Probably not a bad idea when you are refuelling your car either...
At gasstations where people fill up their cars there are also signs for not using your cellphone.
We may not use our private cell phones when we are at work. Mainly because they fair we would get other things on our minds and put the gas (un1203) into the diesel (un1202) groundtank or something like that.
Under the loadingreks and at the whole depot area you are not allowed to use your cellphone or carphone. It MUST be switshed off.

The BBC reported this to be a myth based on the research of Dr Adam Burgess, of the University of Kent, who presented his findings to a conference.
He said that out of 243 petrol station fires attributed to mobiles around the world in the last 11 years, not one was caused by a handset.
Researchers said static electricity from the body caused many of the fires.

Agreed Kelly, it has been proven that if you have petrol in any open container+ many mobile phones make them all go off at once and it wont go off
However if you shuffle your feet on carpet and use that energy stored and get a wire you can cause it to expload

this is why we only have secure flashlights in our job as petrol drivers.

We are (in the netherlands) the best paid drivers around. That's due to the danger and the level of education they ask from you.
What I make in US-dollars a year?
48700 USdollars a YEAR AFTER TAXES
Before taxes you don't want to know ;)
We pay a lot (overtime money even 50% goes to taxes)
