  • Indeed, often the poem is forced with unconventional metre, and perhaps this was Dryden's fault, but we might say Pope eventually perfected the heroic couplet and besides: Pope reminds us of the fools who repair but to church for music, but for wit to not repair there. Poetry, as it seems to me, is more than emotion and music. This is the error of the Moderns. They rely on sensation--emotion and music.

  • The music of poetry is its metre and its sound - the sound preferably supplied by the human voice rather than the indistinct tones of the inner ear. Sensation is basic to us, if you mean the seven senses, as is emotion. It would be a strange poetry that had no emotion music or sensation. It would probably sound like those documents put out by government departments or businessmen! But we musn't forget another prime element - thought, intellect; which is what I suspect you are getting at. Chas.

  • Indeed, and I do believe music is required. But intellect with it. Which is most important? Perhaps they are equal, perhaps not. I never meant to imply that the music of poetry was not good, nor the sensation since it is art and should move us. But you are wiser than me.
