Northern lights and aurora are two names for the same phenomenon. The aurora is caused by charged particles, electrons and protons, striking the earth's atmosphere. These particles stream downward along the earth's magnetic field.

The particles give energy to the oxygen and nitrogen molecules of the atmosphere. This energy is then given off in the form of light.

Aroras are caused by charged particles from the sun hitting the gasses in our atmosphere. The gasses then discharge the energy, thus creating light. The colors depend on the compostition of the gasses. All in all great vid and very beautiful.

aurora borealis is formed when high energy electrons collide with the upper atmosphere... the northern lights are often seen near the poles because of the earths polarity... I don't know quite a lot about it but hope it answers your question.
