Do you realize that if you'd been around in the late 60's you would be on just about every Beatles and Stones album? I would love to hear your 'Whowhatchamacallit' (tuvan igil?) 2 stringy thingy with a Hang Drum and Shakuhachi. That would be awesomness to the n'th degree. You do beautifull work, Thank YOU. Please, keep it up! Oh, and BTW, I just bought an AdrenaLinn because of you.
@valvenator Thanks so much, Valvenator ! I was around in the late 60s, but I was just a little kid :) Well, I do play the Hang Drum and take Shakuhachi lessons, so the 3 instruments may come together at some point after all... though it'll be awhile before my Shakuhachi playing reaches a better skill level... and here I thought the igil was tough to learn!
@deathlord236 thanks for asking, she wasn't in the hospital, she has a chronic pain disease, but she's happy and will be around for a long long time :)
@Brysonmdulack they are hard to find, you might be able to find out where the Tuvan bands "Chirgilchin" or "Huun Huur Tu" are touring and get one from them. The sound at 2:27 is just be dragging the bow very close to the bridge, you hear it here and there, but much shorter than the long one at 2:27. Thanks for the comment! -- John
@heregleyee Hi. No it is called "igil" from the country of Tuva, near Mongolia. But it is very much like the Morin Khuur. I have a Morin Khuur too. Thanks for the nice comment, glad you liked it! :)
Love the sound of this... how long did it take you to learn this instrument, and did you have previous bowed instrument experience?
Is this melody your own composition? If so, would you mind if I tried composing a piano variation on it? So far I've only composed my own stuff but it might be a good learning experience for me to try working with a previously established melody.
@jafafah0ts Thanks for the comment. It took me about a year to get "not bad" at it :) Yes, it's my own composition, please feel free to use it in any fashion that you'd like, hope it brings you inspiration.
this is amazing! i've never seen this instrument before; when i looked at it i thought it might sound similar to an erhu but it definitely doesn't. how does it make all the harmonics? there are only two strings, correct?
@obsidiansea Thanks very much for the comment! Yes, there are only 2 strings, but each "string" is really a bunch of separate thin strands, strung parallel, 50 on the high string, 90 on the low string, so they all vibrate against each other, and that's what give it a huge harmonic palate, depending on how you bow it.
beautiful indeed! I am an Indian musician fascinated with these instruments. Are the strings made of gut? Do you also have resonating strings? I presume the belly is made of animal hide? Thanks for the video!
WOW! I've been listening to your stuff for a while now, mostly the hang, but this is -by far- my favorite of yours! Thank you so much for sharing your work, I'd really love to hear more like this one. :)
That had to be one of the most beautiful things I've heard in a while. It completely enchanted me. The sound just took me somewhere else for a brief time and it was wonderful. I added this to my channel's playlist--too good to pass up.
I just met a guy in Boulder, CO - through his purchase of my keyboard controller - who teaches the Morin Khuur. Wasn't familiar with the Morin Khuur, or related instruments, so I did a YouTube search; glad I did...
all ur music is so intense and deep and it speaks through the vibrations, and beat of the drums even there are no lyrics. i just wish i could get a hold on some of these instruments you use. where do you get one of these igils? what are names of other cool interesting instruments you use??
This is so beautiful it nearly brings tears to my eyes. Thank you so much for sharing this on youtube. I have listened to this about 5 different times now; just like classical music, it never grows old.
I got it here in the US from Aldar Tamdym, from the Tuvan group Chirgilchin. He made it in Tuva and I got it after their tour here, since he was going home and would make more when he got back. Thanks for the comment. Do you live in Tuva?
Hi John, Slowly I'm getting to all of your videos. Its just amazing to me how much feeling you can convey with this instrument. As you play its like you, and the instrument are truly one. The music depicts the meaning of the song so well it just magic. Gloria Hapi in the Pacific NW.

Other than Tuva (hang a left at Mongolia, and then a quick right turn after Siberia :) there aren't a whole lot of choices, other than to catch the bands "Huun Huur Tu" or Chirgilchin when they are touring, if they have any to sell. I'll send you a message with an email address of a guy in Tuva who sells them.

Thanks very much for the comment! There are only 2 strings on the instrument, but each string is really over 50 separate strands of very thing nylon, and they are not twisted together, so all of them vibrate against each other together, and that's what gives the instrument its special sound, and brings out the "harmonics" (some of the higher flute-like sounds)
