@Scrumxxx technically its the suspects fault, because guess who was charged with it, if a police officer dies from a blown tire while chasing you your held responsible, same thing here
I just stumbled upon this video while looking for something else. I was watching TV that day, forget which channel, I think 12, but I'll never forget it. This video, which I've never seen before, shows what happened so much more clearly than anything else I've seen.
We let these things happen. Why do we let these things happen? Because we like to invest in death rather than preservation of life. We've had heat seeking missiles for decades, why can't we have heat avoiding helicopters?
What sickens me is the overindulgence in spectacular news reporting. Not enough rubber neckers on the highway...no, we have to take to the air for glorious views, and cause our own carnage. Wake the fuck up. Pay attention to what YOU are doing. Not what someone else is doing!! My respects to the men lost.
Although a horrible incident, this does serve to illustrate that basic principle of airmanship: "Above all else, fly the aircraft!"
In answer to the question:
"Couldn't the pilot of choper 15 simply have manoeuvred to avoid the collision with chopper 3?"
If you watch this video again, closely, you'll notice that events on the ground become more complicated and attention-grabbing just in the few seconds prior to the collision and the pilot only seems to notice chopper 3 1 second before impact.
@bongobingoaz Way to be a dick, ever think he might not be an English speaker? SINCE he's from the Netherlands that makes SENSE. Now whats your excuse?
@PaJ2k10 I think that they didnt pay attention to the other chopper until the last moment.. that they both were watching what was happening on the ground rather than their airspace.. but idk
@bongobingoaz lol. If you're going to be a douche learn how to spell first. Ever think s/he's from a different country? SINCE its not a confusing silly typo like yours that makes SENSE doesn't it?
My heart and stomach feel very heavy when I watch this video. I was watching ABC 15 news when this happened LIVE. You can't hear it in this video, but I heard chopper 15's pilot scream. It's so tragic and heart breaking.... R.I.P you guys...
@SpoonGoonKay There are other youtube videos where you hear the pilot scream to his death. I'm sorry, this is beyond unacceptable. There needs to be a stop put to this. Youtube is showing too many crash videos of people dying. These are humans, not just metal parts exploding, humans are dying in these videos. Youtube doesn't even care. This is just repulsive. Then you have morons making fun of this tragic event. Reading youtube comments makes you realize what the world has turned to.
@GaGa4GaGaBalls WRONG. The moment that reality of any kind is censored, you will be dominated and controlled by those doing the censoring. Since I enjoy controlling my own life as much as possible, and I haven't appointed YOU as my arbiter of good taste and sensibility, I suggest you STOP VIEWING VIDEOS THAT UPSET YOU. Pretty simple solution.
@SpoonGoonKay I agree with you and even after watching this video 2-3 years ago and today..it just gives me a chill. The reason for my reply to you sir is because you stated we could not hear his scream...well we do actually. right at the end and anchor woman chats away..but I heard it and its just so damn tragic.
I was watching channel 12 live when this happened. I knew it was bad really sad day in Phoenix. Also Phoenix Police Officer George Cortez was shot & killed later that night. A day full of tragic events.
It was also the night Rush played at the Cricket Pavilion. The police had the place surrounded and wouldn't let anyone leave. We were stuck in the parking lot for about 2 hours after the show. I remember the the police chopper hovering over the show too.
When flying with a cameraman/pod it is very easy to be absorbed in the event and ensuring the Helicopter is aligned correctly to deliver unobstructed views for the camera.
This is a very sobering representation of the incident. Lets hope the loss of these pilots and camera crews will focus everyone on look out and ensure this sad event is not repeated. God rest those on board and sympathy to the families.
I seen this event live when it happen, they looked like they were too busy with police chase to see what was in front of them. RIP to all that lost there live that day!
@trueightysix Aircraft are actually quite hard to see up in the sky, they're only a minuscule amount of the view in front of you (the sky is HUGE), and they can easily blend into background colors. Helicopters also tend to hover still a lot, so they can have little motion to detect either. VERY easy to miss this helicopter visually.
they edited out the screams.bummer

That's the reason we don't have flying and will never have flying cars.
If two train professionals in open sky by themselves crash what makes you think it won't be a daily occurence and horror show if we all flew too.
I know what you're all thinking, "They weren't paying attention."
You're exactly right.
That's how many car crashes occur.
Now time that by the amount of actual vehicles and complexity of flying and you'd have a scene like this daily.
Imagine the innocent bystanders below.

From the computer re-enactment, it looks like the pilot of the second helicopter was to blame for the collision between the two helicopters.
