TT sang in not less than 5 languages; mandarin, minan, cantonese, english, japanese, indonesian. She sang it all beautifully; her sweet and lovely voice is the best everlasting gift to this world. A thing of beauty is a joy forever by John Keats in 1818.
The 80's was the best time in our TT career and also the period were her beauty shone like 10,000 stars........although the Cantonese is somehow rougher than the mandarin, any song she sings in Cantonese sound more than beautiful.......she is out of this world.
I am biased (apologies to all Cantonese speakers) and find the Cantonese language unpleasant to listen to, but when TT sings them, the songs become sonorous!! This opinion is actually shared by many Mandarin-speaking Chinese. Btw, accent or not, a song is judged more by the singer's voice and expressiveness, not by slight deviations in accent.
@gctlcda I am a Teochew but I grew up in a Cantonese neighborhood. I love both the Cantonese dialect and the Chinese Languague. In my opinion, one's preference of a language depends on, among many other things, your background and exposure to it. BTW, this is a nice song.
@evebluemoon Well, if you really have to be picky, teresa's Cantonese (at least in this song) was not perfect so to speak but still way better tham many HK-born singers whom I have difficulties in hearing what they're singing. No doubt her Mandarin songs were obviously better than Catonese songs, her Cantonese was more than acceptable as a non-native speaker.
As a Cantonese speaker, I have to say Teresa's Cantonese is absolutely first-class! Her cantonese is MUCH MUCH better than many Hong Kong born singers now!
