Back when my mom was a kid, people filled up your gas tank for you, and gas cost 10 to 25 cents. Now, you have to fill your gas tank yourself, and gas is 3 dollars a gallon. BRING BACK the good times!

It isn't in our government's interest for prices to go down. Think of how many tax dollars the federal and state governments would lose if we all woke up tomorrow morning and our cars ran on water. The country would shut down. It is in our government's interest to keep the price elevated as high as possible while keeping the economy moving to capture taxes. These taxes are one constant that our government can count on b/c of lack of alternatives.

If you look at the charts the price of oil would go up while the demand went down. If we really didnt have enough oil then why did the gas prices drop so suddenly. This is why. We have enough oil. We just have assholes in place who hike the prices up so that they make more profits.

The best way to regulate companies as a consumer is to buy less. In the US I would guess its a bit harder being that the country as a whole is so much larger but over here in the UK I don't even own a car and I've never found I needed one. All the while are roads are clogged up with people that are driving maybe 5 miles on average, unless its raining I think thats sad. Sure I have a motorbike but its quite rare I even ride that.

You need to research the situation better. You don't need to drill for more oil. What you need is to change your habits and infrastructure to be more efficient - like the european.

We need to stop being dependent on oil, period. That means alternative energy, and that means government stepping in and giving economic incentives for their feasible development, not waiting for the laissez-faire market to do the job.
Let's face it, guys. The reserves in most countries have peaked (or will within ten years), and the American dollar is doing absolutely piss-poor. The only solution is to switch to algae-based fuel, which is perfectly feasable, inexhaustable, environmentally friendly, and has the potential to make investors and corporations billions of dollars. I don't see what the problem is.
First of all, nowhere in The Constitution does it declare that the President should control gas prices. So, that is not a function of the Executive Branch.
I do agree that we should tap every resource to increase the supply of oil in the United States. This can be done by recognizing property rights.
And "windfall taxes" will do nothing but impede the oil companies from investing to discover oil, which will increase the price for the consumer.
We need a leader that will mandate that new alternate feul sources (like corn or hydrogen or compressed air) be used. But this won't happen when the oil companies are running the government.
Hydrogen is becoming more viable, but corn/ethonal is terrible in every possible way. We need to drill for gas and oil in AMERICA considering we have enough in our territory to last almost 80 years and probably even more with newer cars being developed. Alternatives are good, but they are far from total developement and we need to use what we have and lower prices for citizens untill we have better sources.

The windfall profits tax is a crock. Record profits are from more sales not an increase in profit margins. Read the financial reports. Oil companies have maintained a steady profit margin of 9-10%, as the price of oil has gone up so have their COSTS. Windfall profits tax is just something politicians say to try to get votes, it wont drive down oil or gas prices...if anything it might drive prices up.

It isn't in our government's interest for prices to go down. Think of how many tax dollars the federal and state governments would lose if we all woke up tomorrow morning and our cars ran on water. The country would shut down. It is in our government's interest to keep the price elevated as high as possible while keeping the economy moving to capture taxes. These taxes are one constant that our government can count on b/c of lack of alternatives.

If you look at the charts the price of oil would go up while the demand went down. If we really didnt have enough oil then why did the gas prices drop so suddenly. This is why. We have enough oil. We just have assholes in place who hike the prices up so that they make more profits.

The best way to regulate companies as a consumer is to buy less. In the US I would guess its a bit harder being that the country as a whole is so much larger but over here in the UK I don't even own a car and I've never found I needed one. All the while are roads are clogged up with people that are driving maybe 5 miles on average, unless its raining I think thats sad. Sure I have a motorbike but its quite rare I even ride that.

Let's face it, guys. The reserves in most countries have peaked (or will within ten years), and the American dollar is doing absolutely piss-poor. The only solution is to switch to algae-based fuel, which is perfectly feasable, inexhaustable, environmentally friendly, and has the potential to make investors and corporations billions of dollars. First of all, nowhere in The Constitution does it declare that the President should control gas prices. So, that is not a function of the Executive Branch.
I do agree that we should tap every resource to increase the supply of oil in the United States. This can be done by recognizing property rights.
And "windfall taxes" will do nothing but impede the oil companies from investing to discover oil, which will increase the price for the consumer.

Hydrogen is becoming more viable, but corn/ethonal is terrible in every possible way. We need to drill for gas and oil in AMERICA considering we have enough in our territory to last almost 80 years and probably even more with newer cars being developed. Alternatives are good, but they are far from total developement and we need to use what we have and lower prices for citizens untill we have better sources.

You all are fools to think drilling more oil will lower gas prices because the USA competes with CHINA and INDIA who are completely westernized. The more you drill, the more they take. Simple as that. Less than 10% of the current Alaskian goes to us-most is sold to Japan. And even with new oil wells it will take YEARS before anything can be used from it. Japan is coming out with Hydrogen cars next year. Now that could ease oil prices-technology-not new wells.

Most of the electric power in this counrty comes from coal, which is worse for the enviroment then the ICE. I agree, the envirment is important and we need to stop pollution. We will never be out of oil despite the hype that the oil companies would like you to believe. Oil does not come from dead dinosaurs, nor does it have any organic properties. The sun drives atoms into the crush of the Earth that is then compressed and turned into crude oil. The oil companies found this out in the late 1970s, but have kept that knowledge from us to control pricing.

The windfall profits tax is a crock. Record profits are from more sales not an increase in profit margins. Read the financial reports. Oil companies have maintained a steady profit margin of 9-10%, as the price of oil has gone up so have their COSTS. Windfall profits tax is just something politicians say to try to get votes, it wont drive down oil or gas prices...if anything it might drive prices up.

Since the late 1940's the US has imported crude oil, a time 30 years before US domestic production peaked and began to decline. So even at a time when you had 100s of billions of barrels left in easy to reach wells you still couldn't satisfy your own domestic consumption. We all need to get organized and deal with this problem. Either we have to elect leaders like Bob says that can get the job done.
But, that may not work. So, we have to take this gas price issue into our own hands. Organize our efforts in such a way to really bring the oil co's to their knees. I'm not talking about just reducing consumption.

Do you think that all problems in the world can be solved by a change of leadership? I'm just wondering are you really that stupid. Do you think we humans can actually do anything, solve anything, etc. as long as we have the right leadership? Don't you think there might actually be physical constraints in this world? Such as limits to oil production due to the finite nature of the resource? I'm just wondering if you guys know how delusional you all sound.
