I have one of these balancers too. From what the old timers that have used these type of balancers have told me, you are actually supposed to put an equal amount of weight on the inner and outer lip of the rim directly across from each other until the bubble is centered to get a correct static balance.
years ago before the computer wheel ballancing machines cam into play i used to help my step dad out an a local western auto store and thats all they had was a bubble ballancer like this.. now it was more beefy beacuse it was for a tire shop but it was the same principle.. The weights were the clip on type and we always put them on the outter rim edge so if it worked for so many years i dont think it would hurt to use it on a regular passanger car today.. just saying..
Nice. I actually purchased that same portable wheel balancer at Harbor Freight last week. Static balancing does indeed serve a purpose. For example, if I remember correctly, aircraft propellers are first balanced/checked statically before they are balanced/checked dynamically. A static check sets you up rather nicely for the dynamic check.
Having a wheel statically balanced is better than nothing.
Save yourself the trouble and take it to Sam's Club. They do all 4 tire balancing and rotation for only $15.52! FIY dynamic balance is a much better way of balancing tires.
Part of my job is balancing grinding wheels - surely the principle is the same, you only need a vertical mount for the wheel and you're away. . And anyway how do you get permission to have your old car wheel on her lovely wooden floor?
@majorrojam Sorry to the long delay. This method does not take into account whether the wheel should go on the inside or outside of the rim. I don't recommend this for a street car. For many racing applications, it seems to do a good job. I've been using it for a while now and it's saved me quite a bit of money which can be used doing more events. From the next room: "Honey, I've told you time and again......no outside stuff inside the house!"

This is a retarded way to balance wheels.

put the weights centered inside the rim
or more near where you put them if they are bent or damaged

This is only an option for static balancing which is good enough for about 60% of the situations and not efficient for dynamic issues

nice solution for doin it yourself.
Except when I take my rims away for balancing the balancing machine tells also were to put the weight inner or outer side of the rim.
How does this handle that issue?
