  • Omg what a feisty little colt! I always enjoy Joescolors videos, always have such good insight

  • my colt was a lil pest like this but i got him haltered with no fuss cos the whole herd knew me and i was in no rush. i just drove up to the fields several times a week just to play with the babies. when they all came running to me whenever thy saw me, i started putting everythin i had handy, including my clothes over them and from that to a halter, to them it's the same. to actually lead them with it, that'sthe bugger. if they're real young it's real easy, if older, it's a matter of patience...

  • She has just come back to me all grown up, now it is time to start on her riding career. thanks for the visit and good luck with your horses.

  • no way??? which one is she? have we seen her yet

  • she is Doc G extreme halter filly, I just put up a vid of her first ride Pam. This is the one you could be riding :-) thanks for the visit Pam

  • Nice. This was much better.

  • Yup, I had to come back and watch this one again too. You have the best voice over on this one. Classic Joescolors!

Used to pay my grand daughter $10 if she could get their first halter on em. She loved it and it cost me some money. LOL

She'd sit for hours in a lawn chair with a bucket and slowly but surely get those babies haltered for me. Made me smile watching her with them.

Great work Joe. You did this so well it makes me smile every time.

    :~D (That's a BIG smile!)

  • That hoss is being a little bugar, my last filly i halter trained i just baiscly walked up and put the halter on, the one before that ended up damaging my wrist, didn't discourage me none, but its nice to walk away with progress, that colt ended up being a really nice horse on halter, all it takes is time. Your comming along nicly!

  • Thanks for the visit, went to work with her today for the second time since last year and she is doing great.

  • "prepare your equipment" I love that comment...so true. This video was a good indication that the first baby I halter broke I did it in this way. I was fortunate that she was more mellow than the one in the video. I also like "there she goes throwing a little tantrum" I love working with babies. It requires patience and what you do and how you do it the the foundation of how they take thimgs from then one. A mishandling can ruin a horse or make it very difficult to correct. Good Video!

  • Thanks and 5 stars for your comment. :-)

  • hmm good training great 2 start them young

  • I also add things like a small child's saddle into the mix later on. Eventually, I work it up to where the baby is wearing the saddle, has it cinched and has not the slightest care in the entire world. If you do it SLOW (which most breeding places can't or won't) you will get a real easy, mellow and happy first ride when they're 3 or 4.

Thanks for posting this. Very nice stuff!

  • Hey Joe. I liked this one a lot. I do something similar with the babies, using Kel Jeffrey's method, which intead of a line just wrapped around the neck, it's a soft rope with a 2" ring braided into it. As for the halter not being ready and undone, I will read the colt and see how tuned in they are to me. If I tune into something else when they're tuned into me, they transfer over to IT ... and this works real nice when the object is a halter.

  • What a little snert she is! I remember my halter training days.. fun, fun, fun! (;

  • Thanks for visiting Jj

  • I have a realtively untouched 1.5m/o filly that I haltered this weekend using your method. It was perfect! Her behavior is just ike the colt you haltered in this video. She's dominant already, and she kicks if you touch her butt. Haltering this way only took about 15 minutes. Thanks for posting your videos, can't wait to see more.

  • I`m very happy for you Candice and very glad it worked out for you. Now comes lots of rubbing on her, and some slight move away from me"pushing her lightly " with the hands, just so she knows you are in charge. Wish you lots of success with her. JOE

  • It will be interesting to see how this independent streak looks in her as an adult. Is she taking up the dominant position in the herd of yearlings?

  • She is still Independent and is dominant over the other colt she is with , went to hold her for the farrier , and she was fighter, with her legs had to half tap her to get her trimmed .then when it is over she was really nice again. she is really pretty now. and easy to catch.

  • The way the filly is willing to stake out her own comfort area away from mom is very interesting to me since if she was stressed, you would expect mom to be Number One.

Are these horses kept in these small paddocks all the time or does the mom and filly get to go out and about with a herd? I am wondering if she isn't worried about mom's location because mom has never been anywhere but there?

  • This filly was born here, but so were all the rest but they all went straight to mom, this filly was different. Now she is back home with another pair and she is doing really good.

  • Thank you Dea, And I am on my way to Denmark, line them up Dea.... LOL. Thanks for the invite.:-) JOE

  • You have the most soothing voice, Joe.. Great job! You can come halter train the ponies ANY TIME...lol

  • I love how you work with them joe. :)

    thanx for everything with Georgia.

  • Bet she loves it in Alabama,no more JOE to bug her. Thanks Karen, chelc and Rick. enjoy

  • lol...those little ones crack me up.

Love the gentle approach Joe, nice job.

  • Thanks Julie , It took me 25min total till I had her leading. coming soon part 2 leading. I know it went great with your bunch because you have alot of what my mom used to call horse sense, or smarts. thanks again

  • Can't wait to see Part 2.

Hurry on up and get Part 2 posted here on Youtube.

    I like your work, Joe.

And Thanks... we had 10 weanlings when we started. Some were a little more challenging than others. They all have different personalities you need to consider. But all the colts have turned out pretty good.

Got to where babies would come through here and when one was halter broke all ready it was a reason to throw a party! Hehehehe!

Yup, can't wait for Part 2.

    :~)

  • Thanks Julie , hope to have part 2 by the end of the week, lots of work at the moment.........Your totally right they are all different and lots of fun...enjoy

  • Very good job, Joe!

Man, I hear you... we started here with a herd of little wild babies. It's been a long road of learning with them. :~)

I like your use of the rope with the little filly.

    She's a little cutie too.

Impressive, you got that filly haltered in a matter of minutes, real easy like.

    Yup. VERY GOOD JOB!
