  • @AV8R4HM i agree God sent the bird that nearly killed them all.

  • nothing luck here . only skills of pilot mattered.

    from an atheist

  • Yeah i think that it was both luck and pilot skills for example if it wasnt for that river been there, they would have been quite fucked.

  • @TheTattikarlo - The calm of the passengers? - mirculous? I think so. There were no atheists at the moments before impact - people prayed. Funny how people know how to pray when they have to - it's like a baby knows how to breath - God made us that way! Wake up buddy and smell the love. !! - Blessings - Rene

  • thnx

I have now left atheism and open my heart and soul to let the holy spirit of

flying sphagetti monster to enter and purify me.

  • Brat! - Rene

  • @mammyoriordan This is what religious people are best at, isn't it? Making up whatever the hell they want to explain every situation with nonsense.

  • @TheTattikarlo not only skills of the pilot. but i would also not call it "luck". let's say "coincidence" that the hundson river was accessible. ;-)

  • great video

  • watching this video and remembering this story gives me goosebumps

  • i find it funny how it floats

  • hahahahahaha apple imovie music at the beginning

  • im amazed it didnt sink

  • that was lucky, imagine if they wernt so lucky

  • Who is downrating this video? It would be difficult to do something that well produced and accurate in a week or month unless you were a large operation like a network - and he formed this in 2 days!

  • no, it actually happened and it is real footage

  • lol

  • Fantastico...... italy... O__o

  • what a badass pilot!!!!! real hero!! most would try to go back to the runway and result in a major catastrophe!

  • Pilot: "im going in the Hudson"

Tower: "Please repeat that last message?"

    just imagine hehe

  • ****ing PRO!!! GG Captain GG.

  • "experienced glider pilot" except that day his "glider" was about 150,000 lbs

  • if i DoNt LeARn To TyPe CoRRecly I wIlL kiLL mySeLf

  • hahahahahaha

  • @baggen1337 - Here's a knife. :P

  • And I go to LaGuardia College, lol.

  • man you know that pilot was sayin..."control ain't helpin shit i got this"

  • lol let da nigga fly dis shit dude :p

  • Chesley Sullenberger.... got me speachless. Next time i fly to Hawaii, I'm going to pray that Captain Sullenberger is in my plane! :)

  • Glider Pilot.

    Nuff said :)

  • Peta are a bunch of fags.

They shove their beliefs down your throat more than the priest at sunday school does.

    I mean, shit.

  • Has PETA filed suit against US Air yet? Cause you KNOW they will...

  • poor bird

  • 6 stars crash test for the A320 best plane in the world !!!!

  • At 0:37 you can see the twin towers on the right side of the screen...why?

  • because they aren't the twin towers dumbass

  • Wait.. is it the time warner towers perchance?

  • Time Warner Towers, dumbass.

  • still thank the pilots should get a medal

  • 2:20 is amazing. A rare capture of the genuine human spirit. Amazing.

  • I believe Russian engineers could repair that plane so it could fly again.

  • I wouldn't trust a Russian with a bicycle let alone a multi-million aircraft.

  • To find out what happens when not everything goes perfectly, check out Ethiopean Airlines flight 961.

  • it wasn't pure luck. it was a combination of great piloting skill and a little bit of luck. if there were ice, then it could have been catastrophic.

  • You obviously do not know what you talk about. GG

  • You got that right m8 !

  • great report!!!

  • Daylight, the weather, the water being somewhat smooth and the skill of the pilot all played a part......Amazing!!!

  • Just heard the audio!!!! Sully was so in control! You'd think he had merely discovered he had a flat tyre as he pulled out of his drive.

He and his crew deserve all the praise and recognition.

  • they were recognized at tha superbowl

  • God bless all of you, lets all thank God and lets all thank Sully the pilot for his brave skill.

  • this plane got in hands of GOD!! WOW!!!

  • thats inappropriate

im a Christian and i dont think god had anything to do with that

  • and obviously then the geese were in the hands of the devil...that god is clever.

  • After seeing this and hearing of the type of training this pilot had it makes you think that every commerical aviator should have courses on how to fly heavy gliders as a part of their requirements. You may not think it very useful, but you never know when it might just save your life!

  • Pedroandgromit are incorrect about how aircraft fuel tanks behave as they empty; the tanks should have been full and not containing much air, jet fuel is lighter than water (6.6 pounds per gallon versus 8.8 pounds per gallon) BUT the fuel tanks don't "collapse" as they empty, they are a rigid part of the structure, essentially the wings and part of the fuselage comprise the fuel tanks; areas within the wings and fuselage are sealed to create the fuel tank

  • Pedro is right!! wing tanks used by some commercial and all military aircraft is a pliable PVC plastic. This is due to weight limitations for the aircraft. I not certain if the A320 uses these bladders.

  • Fahrenheit

  • No..Mrairplaneman is right. There is no air in fuel tanks as this is an aid to combustion if the aircraft is in an accident. the fuel is pumped out and the tanks collapse in on themselves as they empty.

  • passenger who walked to the tip of the wing and falls into the water does kinda deserve a bit of a slap........sorry

  • You deserve that slap.

  • Great piloting skills! Takes great skill to land such a huge aircraft in water. If you saved that many lives you're automatically a HERO!

  • Question, do we know what pier the camera shot was taken from?

As for the speed of the float the tide was going out at the time of the crash, and there is the rivers otherwise sizable current.

  • I couldn't believe it when I heard all the passengers were standing on the wings, I figured they would slip off... guess some did. Still, nice that the Airbus can float.

  • The aircraft had just taken off, so the fuel tanks would still be full, and jetfuel is lighter than water. That is one factor that helped the jet stay afloat for a while.

  • Wrong, they were headed to some where south, not very far, which means that they didn't need full tanks, and the air in the tanks was what helped keep them up for a while

  • I'd bet it was more jetfuel than... air

  • Could be, can't say for sure if there was or wasn't though

  • god bless him, he is 2009 USA hero

  • Better presentation than most on TV. Great tone in delivery.

  • good lord, that Planes driffting fast...its getting good distends

  • thats crazy

  • whomever made this vid. knew what he was talking about

  • PS to ISHRED, you're also not accounting for the fact that the engines were not working, or is that "just" routine too. Enough said on this subject for me, have a nice day! : )

  • amazing, all this footage of this plane crash landing from so many angles, and yet still no proper footage of a the plane hitting the pentagon on 9/11..............go figure

  • You're all arguing for no reason. The pilot AND co-pilot wouldn't have had enough time to think. They delt with it instinctively. DrumminJ219 is right. However, they had just taken off, they weren't decending from that great a height. The pilots and crew did an amazing job because in the end not many people survive a plane crash into water.

  • The way to land the plan on water requires the tail to hit the water before the engines else it will flip forward and rip up the plane. This guy did it perfect whilst having no power.. no room for error.. no room for corrections. This captain & co-pilot are legendary, kept their head cool when needed. But as a War Pilot veteran he was trained to do so.. Medal of honor!

  • You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. If any plane landed in water tail first (regardless of speed) the tail would snap off, the tip would then hit the water at such a forse the tail would fill with water and the plane would capsize, and sink. Speaking from someone who is an Aircraft Technician :)

  • Teigh86: As a Pilot, you are told in training IF god forbid you had to do a water landing (Ditching), you come in at you glide speed and have the TAIL Area touch the water first or you will flip the plane from nose to tail and you'd be dead regardless of what kind of plane it is. The Pilot(s) did it the correct way, hense everyone walked away. FYI: The Tail section of the plane is one of the few areas on a plane that has the most strength structurally for that reason.

  • You can also clearly see in the video the pilot intended on hitting the water tail first, but didn't. The under belly did. As I said before, they were not at that great a height so wouldn't have had time to plan out their landing, although I am pretty sure a real pilot is trained to do. But you don't train on real planes. You train on simulators. There's only so much they can teach you. Get over "trying" to be correct and be thankful we never had another plane fatality in NY.

  • I think a better alternative would have been a Barrel Roll. Yes?

  • It's not all about flying skill. The captain had mere seconds to take in all the information and decide if he could return to LGA, or try and make TEB or EWR. When he weighed the risk/reward he choose the obstacle free Hudson River. Anyone can do the flying but captains are paid to make decisions.

  • And they had to keep the plane Wings LEVEL so the wings would touch down at the same time and not break off if one touched before the other. Does that help you ishred?

  • kinda like landing on a runway? it would suck to land wing first.

  • you must be same angles landing muchitlike on a runway.he did his job.

  • To Ishred,

FYI: USUALLY when a plane lands on a runway they have landing gears(wheels)It's alot different on water. That crew DID more than their job. They did their job under extreme condition.

  • Obviously i'm not making myself clear. Maybe i should draw a picture.

The pilot put the plane down at the same angle he would if he were landing under normal conditions. Once the plane hit the water, the pilot LOST all control.

Seriously, is it that hard to comprehend that he put the plane down in a manner similar to landing on a runway?

  • Think about this then. Pitch for Airspeed, Thrust (Engine power) for Altitude. Combine the two and you get a NORMAL Landing. He had NO Thrust = a heck of alot more difficult landing. An A320 is not designed with a boat hull and pontoons to land in water and amphibious landing gear to land on land. Does that help you out at all? The underside is NOT MADE for WATER landings on a NORMAL Basis. Put Angles aside for a sec and think about that.

  • so then we agree that the engineers of this plane are hero's because their plane held up under those conditions?

again, what you just mentioned has nothing to do with the pilot.

  • OMG I feel like i'm trying to explain this to a 5 yr old! It has everything to do with the Pilot because the Pilot(s) are the ones that are flying the damn plane. Landing any plane that is not designed to land on water is NOT A NORMAL CONDITION, Landing an airplane without engine power is not a normal condition (unless a Glider plane)!

  • A Standard angle for an aircraft to land is 3 degrees acording to the FAA. The Pilot had to come in on that angle and last second increase the pitch up by 1 or 2 degrees and HOLD IT untill the plane came to rest in order to make sure that the nose of the plane didn't dive down into the water and kill all of them.

  • ON TOP OF ALL THAT, the Pilot(s) had to maintain their glide speed that is in the aircraft's Pilot Operating Handbook so they dont stall the plane in the air or land short of where they need to so they could clear any obsticles (like bridges).

  • No the pilot did not put the plane down at the same rate of decent or angle as a normal landing. In a normal landing the angle is decided by having a proper pitch attitude and POWER!! Since he had no power he had to get the aircraft down into a ground effect state and let the airspeed bleed while maintaining a very VERY precise pitch attitude that could only be nearly imposible to judge since the water offers a false sense of depth perception....Take it from a pilot, this man is a HERO!!!

  • incredible skills from the pilots!

  • pouso perfect๑۩۞۩๑

  • Excellent Text book water landing!!!

Replying to Ishred: You obviously don't understand how reeaaalllyyyyy BAD that landing could have been coming in to land an Airliner with 150+ PAX at around 155kts (GLIDING) on water when the plane is not Made to land on water. If he came in much faster he would have broken up the underside and maybe slpit the plane in half! Water can help you in a situation like this, but it can kill you too if you land on it wrong like at the wrong Angle and(or) Speed!

  • like landing on a runway can kill you if you land at the wrong angle or speed...he pretty much landing it like on a runway. he did his job

  • Ishred: "There are no special techniques involved in landing on water". Yup, when you have one engine working you still have some control of power and some hidraulic system working, thus you have more chance to put the plane on the right angle. Sully had NO engine. Question: how did he put the plane on the right angle? According to your theory, he used no technique, right? Yup Ishred, you are the guy.

  • a planes angle is not determined by an engine...you know those little flaps on the wings and the tail that move up, down, left/right, that's the angle.

  • i just flied from La Guardia 3 weeks ago

  • Do you know WHERE THE PLANE LANDED?! It landed in the friggin Hudson River... Do you know what skill it takes to land a plane gently in the water without it tearing to shreds by the water pressure bashing against the plane and not to mention it could've dived nose first into the river killing everyone...

  • airplane landing without an engine pushing the plane?.......... whats so special about it?

  • the plane glided down..your point?

  • Chapeau the pilot !

  • beau softage sai cool

  • What an amazing landing! Respect to Sullenberger.

  • This pilot. This PILOT! What an achievement! A++*** for this state-of-the-art touch down. Despite (or just because) the seriousness of the situation it's just awesome to see such a perfect landing.

Sullenberger is the man of the year.

  • Amazing. This days..America is just hungry for some good news. I salute the pilots, the crew and the rescuers of this incident. A lot of heroes and brave men and women that day..

  • Great simple explanation.

  • pilot should get lots of money for saving every ones lifes

  • That's some piloting! The adage in aircraft design is that planes with engines mounted on the rear of the fuselage will survive while planes with engines mounted under the wings will be torn apart, engines first, then wings, then body. That this plane was of the latter design and survived fully intact and its passengers with it, it means the pilots were on their game.

That said, it shows the absolute necessity of readying aircraft with floats for just this sort of situation.

  • this is the kind of crap pilots daydream about.

  • Third Impact is only 6 years from now.

  • It would have been cool if the passengers did synchronized swimming dives off the wing in celebration of being alive. Nah actually on second thought, that would have been pretty gay.

  • Remember the Hawaii air flight several years ago that lost the top of the cabin in flight, and the pilot still safely landed the plane. Many passengers were literally whipped in their seats with pieces of dangling aluminum and debris flapping in the wind. That pilot was a hero also, but forgotten, except by the ones who lived through that ordeal, and us that are old enough to remember it.

  • oh yeah all the flight attendants were blown out of the plane though.

  • Source?

    Noone was killed.

  • Reply to sr3d128

For some reason Youtube is being gay. What I wrote was actually a reply to someone else but it posted as a standard reply to this video. Someone was talking about an accident in Hawaii and I was replying to that. No one was killed on the US Airways flight. Sorry for the mix up. Damn Youtube.

  • Obviously you don't understand my point.

The pilot landed the plane exactly how he would have landed it any other day of the week, the only difference was that it was water instead of a runway. Look at the angle it came down on; looks like a normal landing. There are no special techniques invovled in landing on water.

  • Yes because pilots always turn there engines off and just look for a good place to land don't they, ever tried steering a moving car with flat front tyres!

  • Reply to stu16v: No they dont. If you have a working engine you USE it until or unless the situation requires you not to. In this case they didn't have both engines working.

  • Sarcasm, Google it lol

  • Oh yeah ishred, you´re an idiot. Try to jump your car from a bridge at 120km per hour against the water. Yup, it´s just like jumping on the land... nothing will happen...

  • you must be retarded and don't understand what i'm saying.

The plane hit the water at the same angle as if it were landing on a runway.

  • Ishred: Seriously guy, you have extremely little or no concept of what actual ADDED SKILL you need as a pilot to land the plane the way they did. The angle that he landed the plane is only ONE FACTOR in how to do a successful (and Excellent) landing as they did. If lets say they came in at 200kts IAS they could have broken the plane in two at that angle and they all would have probably been dead. Landing a plane on hard surface involves landing gear not a belly landing. BIG DIFFERENCE dumb ass.

  • Obviously you missing OURS... Not a routine landing by ANY means. The angle may have been the same as "any other day of the week" but landing with wheels on the ground and landing on water, where landing gear is useless (both ground and water are hard when hit) are TWO different things. Give the pilot and his staff credit where credit is due, thats all we are saying I have the feeling ground or water is not as hard as your head!

  • why is this comment neg it,s the truth??

  • I actually knew a couple on the Aloha Flight. Since they were from NY they had to get back on a plane to come home. He said it was hell trying to get his wife to get on a plane again. Can't blame her

  • nice video, thanks gd intresting info

  • I really like this video! I&TBPSQUOm sure you really put a lot of effort into making it and it really does show. Nice work! Upload some more if you can!

  • Awesome airplane with awesome pilots. They made it so all passengers survived. That's true skills.

  • if it was a Miracle, none of it would of happend in the first place. lol

  • if it was a miriacle they would a be alive.OH WAIT THEY ALL ARE. thats a miracle dude

  • omg

    miracle

    its skill and luck

    nothing supernatural about that

  • oh wait.. if it didn't happen, they STILL would be alive.

  • i dont even find your response lol

yeah it must be a miracle because it wasnt likely to happen (sarcasm)

the word miracle just implies that it had nothing to do with nature's laws

    and thats ignorant and stupid

    you saw the footage

the pilot did a great job

    honor him

nothing supernatural did happen in this incident

  • Yet another reason why Boeing should be mandatory.

  • It was an Airbus A320.

  • awsome footage

  • Thanks for omitting much of the non sense the media has focused on.

Also a huge thank you for giving Jeff Skyles the credit he is due for a job well done. The media has assumed that the captain is the only one flying the airplane.

this incident highlights how important a good flight crew really is. It further highlights how criminal it really is that many airline pilots are paid less than $20,000 per year for their skill. we owe these men and women more.

  • Commercial airline pilots make considerably more than $20K per year, not just in the US but all over the world

  • @syadamung My first year as an airline pilot for a company in denver colorado, I made 16,800 before taxes. So....explain to me how that is more than 20K. The number seems to be smaller.

  • Absolutely great commentary.

  • Wow !

How refreshing to watch a news story without fatalities, greed, malfeasance or mayhem.

I wonder if any of the passengers were listening to an Ipod or similar device and if they were listening to Al Green's or Talking Heads' "Take Me To The River."

Thanks for posting this video, AVWeb.

  • Just goes to show that miracles do happen.

  • Miracles had nothing to do with this. A skilled pilot is the reason those people are alive.

  • Dude its the Hudson river. One of thea most heavely traveled rivers in the world. Pleanty of boats to spare.

  • i ttly agree.

  • do you have at least a clue about chance? im sure youre on of these guys who talk about miracles when 1 passenger survives

this incident did obey the law of physics and they were LUCKY that they got a skillful pilot

  • i totally agree. Set what you CAN control to optimum values and then roll the dice.., the rest is up to LUCK, not a miracle.

  • NOT luck or a miracle ANY ONE can sit at the controls of a heavy glider ..knowing were to land and what your craft does. Counts as skill you have a 1000 factors in this ...speed ..ALT, Thurst, Drag, Lift, Weight, Wind, And 2 big water scoops on te bottom of the wing waiting to slam your plane hard into the water knowing when to rise the nose without stalling or coming in to fast makes this pilot very skillful

  • all that skill and then LOTS OF LUCK!!! because the water's wave action could have been hard to predict and still compromised the integrity of the fuselage on impact.

  • Very well put. To "pancake" a large

aircraft like that on the water, takes an

    extraordinary amount of skill.

    God Bless him!!!!

  • Nice report

  • Great footage and reporting!

  • Hats off too the pilot, Well done. Good landing and everyone got off alive.

  • People call the pilot a hero that day. I tell them you only saw what someone who was already a hero did that day. You build and live your life in a way that makes you capable of decisions that are logical, confident, optimal often and in the end time vindicates that choice. That person is already a hero before anyone ever calls them that. What you saw is the inevitable ending of someone that had what it takes to begin with,to pull exactly this only rational choice. Congrats to him and all crew.

  • why were most of the passengers on the wing not wearing lifejackets, cant believe no one slipped into the water

  • it took 5mins in total from the first engine failure to the plane touching down on water. I dont think thats enough time for everyone to have life jackets on. some had it on, some didnt.

  • and this is why airbus sells their planes to aeroflot 2

  • Very well put together, I've been looking for hours on the major news sites for decent footage of the ditching(cnn, fox...they had one snippet!) This is what I was looking for. THANK YOU!

  • _TOP GUN.
