I think that if you go about saying ignore her ethnicity ect, then you are dising her importance in japan. before her you didn't see artists who weren't japanese, or atleast look japanese, for the most part. in Japan if you weren't japanese you tried to hide it as best you could, and if you couldn't, like me and siblings, then you got treated bad. So when she came out it was kinda of shocking to have a pop idol who was obviously not japanese on tv and such. Now adays it is not uncommon at all
@baimeng1 THANK YOU!! I'm tired of people who are like, "Oh just ignore race and enjoy the music!" It's like they seem to forget that by just looking at her, you can't simply ignore that fact. It's a HUGE SHOCK for the Pop music of the world-- a Black/Korean, beautiful, talented singer from JAPAN!! I don't find anything wrong with people mentioning her race! She's internationally crossing a big line for African-American women. It's like there's absolutely NOTHING that we can't do! It's uplifting
@DetectiveTective i know right. my father is white, mother shino-japanese, and my siblings and i all took after him so we could't pass as japanese. back then there was so many things we couldn't do , or places we couldn't go.
I have heard Cristal Kay sing with M-flo years ago, I didnt know how she looked like (I assume Japanese for obvious resons) but I always thought she had a tone to an african-american, and now years later I see her for the first time and read that she is african-american and korean and I think ... AWESOOOME!!!!!! Its nice to know I wasnt imagining things XD
Japan i'm afraid can be just as prejudice as any other part of the world. It's people, not the country. Again it's what SHE feels she is, everyone needs to stop putting her in some tick box. How about she is a good singer? Ok! People should just listen the song for that reason. Who the hell cares where she's from, and what language she sings in. She has a great voice and can dance. Thats it!
she's half black and korean and she grew up in japan, was born there and everything. what's the problem with everyone. she's a japanese citizen. smh. AND she's a damn good singer!! >:)
@giraffe103: WHOA HEY! Crystal K and Miley Cyrus are two artist that shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence...unless it's somthing like "Miley Cyrus has little to no talent, especially when compared to Crystal K (or any other artist)" YOU GOT THAT?!
Her dad was African American and her mom was South Korean. She was born and raised in Japan and debuted 13, so most of her friends and fans probably think of her as being Japanese even if they know she's not.
More importantly, she's super talented. :DD
@ThePerfectAtrocity Her dad was stationed in Japan with the Navy, so it's possible she gained citizenship before then. The US Army has a way of getting stuff done lol ._.
Yep, Japan is not ju solis -- however, if one of her parents was a Japanese citizen at the time of her birth that would make her, by birth, a Japanese citizen. It's one of the clauses to Japan's jus sanguinis. But I'm not sure where she was born, only that she was from Yokohoma. It's probably safe to say her parents acquired citizenship themselves, extending to her. Moreover, who cares?
Sorry but Japanese nationality is determined by your parents - jus sanguinis (right of blood) - not by the person being born in Japan. Neither of her parents are Japanese so I find it hard to believe that she was given Japanese citizenship when she was born. More than likely, she had to apply for naturalization after she turned 20.
@ThePerfectAtrocity Her mother is a zainichi don't forget it so maybe her mother is considerate like a japanese people because CK is a Japanese citizenshop since she was born (sorry for my english)
for those who think that Crystal Kays mother is selfish for not teaching her Korean. Crystal Kay stated herself that she didnt have an interest in learning it . That was her decision . Shes trying to learn now though

@FayeChan01 amen, i was just thinking to myself, she's half korean, but EFF it, she freaking grew up in japan, speaks japanese, is used to japanese culture, so that makes her japanese!!
@deathpearl360 thats absolutely not true japan is as racist as anywhere else in the world. their citizen policy shows their racism to foreigners. i feel that if you asked crystal kay how her life as a child in japan she would tell you it was rough dealing with the race issue. but i do understand what your saying about japan not being racist as in like there is no kkk
@dontfreakdude No Japan is more accepting to foreigner compared to other Asian countries but when your young children may have been horrible to her due to ignorance and her being different even if she were another race, her being black isn't the case I think the Japanese are very excepting. Plus racism is everywhere even in most diverse places. :)
@deathpearl360 Really there are only white singers in America. Someone better tell Rhianna, Mariah Carey and Beyonce. Plus BoA and Utada since they released albums strictly for America <3 Next time you wanna argue with someone, get your facts in order first
@insanityscandy well what i am really saying is that americans only like the blacks, of course white, and hispanics as singers....as for asians....well i haven't heard one who actually last long in america except for far east movement... boa and utada aren't really known america wide compared to justin gayber and taylor swift.....if you actually think about it
ACTUALLY, i think its supposed to be that if you grew up in america, you'd be an american citizen, or if you grew up in japan, you'd be a citizen of japan. just like you grew up in england, you'd be an english citizen but not british... unless you actually are. she is african and korean but born in japan. so shes not japanese, she is a citizen of japan. I'm hispanic, but if i was born in russia, that wouldn't make me part russian RACIALLY..
@samjean1122 to be British and English is the same, according to law, she's Japanese by citizen ship, by blood, she's Korean, and black, but the important thing is what she feels inside! Dunno why people always are obsessed w either surgery, or race! I'm adopted from the P.I. but grew up in Norway since I was 1 year old. I consider my self Norwegian, since I got Norwegian citizenship, it's my main language, grew up w Norwegian parents, and customs and traditions, and laws, outside I'm pinoy!
@Gille87 Yes thank you thats what I was tyring to say. She is not some Wapanese person that just decided to move there and try and be Japanese - it's all she knows. She, like yourself, grew up in a different culture and environment. Imagine her going to Africa, she might like it but it would be culture shock since she never grew up there. I believe culture is more important than race. You can example be Norwegian race and never went there. So all you have is some blood line you can't relate to.
@FayeChan01 thanks for understanding, of course it different to person to person, and I've visited my motherland twice w my adopted family, and they've told me all they know about my real parents, and I also know a lot of filipino people, but I don't hang w them lol. But I feel whole, and I can say that I'm Norwegian culture wise, and in my head, but in my heart I'll always be filipino;P And I don't believe blood is thicker than water! It has to do w love, and where u feel u belong!
Most people see me Norwegian since I grew up here, of course I've had mu struggles w racism and ignorant people saying I'm not Norwegian, which I makes me upset. I came here when I was 1 year old, I don't speak filipino, and I grew up w Norwegian parents, Norwegian friends, and culture and traditions, I can skii for god sake lol And I feel bad for them, not knowing how cruel they are to say something like that to someone who didn't choose it them selves!
@Gille87I know how you feel! I'm actually half english/welsh, but because I don't look full english on the outisde alot of people think i'm just a british citizen. I was born here, my family are from here, speak the queens english. Makes you feel bad but remember it's how you feel on the inside. If thats your culture and home don't let people make you feel any different. They're just ignorant and will remain that way till they change. Thats why i get sick of ppl saying crystal is not from Japan.
@samjean1122 I used the word 'CULTURE' and not race. I don't like to say race, as that goes into a whole other subject. You would look at her and just think 'mixed', but that does not explain where she grew up or where her home is. That is what I meant when everyone keeps this debate about where she is from. If you were hispanic but grew up in Russia, your routes are hispanic but your culture and home are Russia (unless you lived somehwere else aswell). British is the citizenship actually.
yeah! She isn't Japanese cuz she doesn't have a Japanese citizenship. In Japan ,there are so many Korean Japanese and Koreans. They don't have a Japanese citizenship and they said there are not Japanese, they are Korean. I wanna tell we don't hate her, we love her however, your opinion isn't right.
unfortunately people who are too simple minded to understand the only thing in this world that TRULY matters is one's HEART and soul....and good timeless music stems from the depths of a person's innerself..so the people who complain or point fingers all the time at these insignificant things have so many more issues, that its better for them to focus others uniqueness than their own weaknesses to become a better person...
Crystal has Asian features (body and eyes), but Black style (skin and voice). Um, sorry if that sounded a bit prejudice in any way! I'm just saying. ^__^"
@BoiWonda02 What does it help that you got a great voice when you degrade yourself to this kind of music? It's like Louis Armstrong suddenly creating the beat for 50 Cent's new songs. Waste of talent.
She does not sing like Beyonce in this genre. She is much worse at that. Normally, I prefer her performance over Beyonce.
... well considering that she was born and raised in Japan with her parents nationally her alliance is all Japanese so it makes sense for her to take to it regardless of ethnicity <3 <3
@furyflame34 :Um.......she was born in Japan so that makes her Japanese. Yes her dad who is black is from USA and her mom is Asian who is from Korea, But that does not change her current nationality since she was born in Japan. You don't necessarily have to be Asian or Oriental to be Japanese.
@SlashingThunder Her race is Black-Korean, but her nationality is Japanese. furyflame34 was probably talking about her race and not her nationality. Nationality and race are two separate things.
I love ckay, but first time seeing this i thought of a japanese macy's commercial lol.. just because of the stars in the beginning... reminds me of a thanksgiving sale commercial xD
@griffx - Weird isn't it. She's Half Korean yet her selfish mother refused to teach her Korean! WTF?! What kind of mother teaches her child another language?
Most 2nd generation Koreans don't speak Korean, and most likely, Crystal Kay is a 3rd generation Korean, so it's expected that she doesn't speak it at all. The only Zainichis that speak Korean in Japan are the ones that go to a Korean school.
She inspires me so much. Im black and i wanna be a korean singer. and people, it doesent matter what race you are as long as you guys are human and not heartless :) and that the singer can sing and dance so.... GO JAPAN GO KOREA! ^.^
Shes Blasian - Black and Asian, aka Japanese Beyonce, nothing special with her voice, but her appearance is what sells the albums. Kinda lame when considering half of the "bad" singers in her category are better than her...but hey you work with what cards the Gods give you.
@PrisonCipher OGM nothign speical with her ovice !?? r u seriulsy go and k=sliten to her songs hard ot say , konna chikaku de, ko ni orchita !! and tell em wehter she can sing or not !! her voicce is 10 ,000x betta thean most JPOP stars today
@thtJPOPgirl , There isn't anything special, especially if you compare her to BoA or Yoshika, do i need to go down a very big list of artists that are better then her vocally?. I can switch to american singers or keep going with chinese or korean or even japanese singers. Crystal Kay is a face with a decent voice, she isn't on the level of Mariah Carey or even Christina Aguilera.
@PrisonCipher Are you shitting me? Crystal Kay VOCALLY Is better than most of the J-pop stars out there! This song may not show off her vocal ability, but there are plenty of other songs that do. I like boA and all, but half the time she sounds like she's choking on all her American Cd's that didn't sell. Go ahead and compare her to other Asian singers because I'm sure she will be out most of them. Okay she may be no Mariah Carey, but how many singers have a vocal range that extensive?
First J-Pop song that made me love Japanese music.... well only the Pop, R&B, and Hip-Hop Japanese music. J-Rock is scary as heck. Well just about all of m-flo's and Crystal Kay's albums. Hey, and tell Crystal she needs to get on Itunes, I see yall on there. I love you Verbal. I sound so much like a dang groupie. I hate that Y_Y
@Lonelyeco J-rock can be scary I agree but that's the crappy visual and oshare kei stuff like SuG and -OZ-. I urge you to try out some alternative and garage rock like DOES and Asian Kung–Fu Generation :) they won't scare you!
@KraXoom not really, what's so scary about TMGE or Siam Shade? Penicillin? Luna Sea? I agree with selphiexfairy, pop rock in Japan is in general pretty generic, no different than pop rock in the US.
@moxxfactor, huh? I wasn't opening a debate with my comment so please spare me the lessons. Besides a lot of the bands you've mentioned have been around since the early 90's and were more extreme with their attire then they are now. That's what's frightens some, the extreme wardrobes, but these guys hardly classify nowadays as visual-kei although that's how they debut. And who said anything about the US?
@KraXoom right. you can reply yet you don't want others to have an opinion. so that's why you're posting on a public website. if you don't want a debate, why the lengthy retort? hypocrite. if you want, i'll make sure next time i don't reply to you specifically, so you're not bothered with an reply announcement email.
@Lonelyeco Lol, i just read your comment and what you said about JRock made me laugh. It's because all the American JRock fans listen to a lot of the underground/indie bands and Visual Kei groups (in which the talent varies A LOT...usually on the lower end) that are unknown to actual Japanese. But the actual rock music that's popular in Japan isn't quite so scary. The most popular Japanese rock band is probably L'Arc~en~Ciel, if you want to check them out. Just thought I'd let you know. (:
@selphiexfairy Thank you. I've heard of L'Arc~en~Ciel. In fact my first time discovering them was on Myspace because they had sent me a friend request and I was shocked. Yeah, I like their music. But someone had shown me a video of some JRock video and I couldn't even really look at it. She thought the person was cute, well, hot in her words.
@SMnerd pleez beyonce cant dance for shit she looks like she has epilepsy and her singing is alright and she screams to extend her limited range. i gonna agree with dual wielder on this beyonce way over rated. and we all know if she wasnt a celeb her name would ghetto as hell....rly beyonce thats not in a baby book
this is to good to be true

GreyEarlTea 11 months ago 74
@GreyEarlTea
unfortunately people who are too simple minded to understand the only thing in this world that TRULY matters is one's HEART and soul....and good timeless music stems from the depths of a person's innerself..so the people who complain or point fingers all the time at these insignificant things have so many more issues, that its better for them to focus others uniqueness than their own weaknesses to become a better person...

Why the fuck did they destroy her style with this teasy, rap crap?
SSJ5VegetaV4 1 year ago
@SSJ5VegetaV4 I don't think her style is jeopardized in her singing with rappers... she sounds pretty good.
BoiWonda02 1 year ago
@BoiWonda02 What does it help that you got a great voice when you degrade yourself to this kind of music? It's like Louis Armstrong suddenly creating the beat for 50 Cent's new songs. Waste of talent.
She does not sing like Beyonce in this genre. She is much worse at that. Normally, I prefer her performance over Beyonce.
SSJ5VegetaV4 1 year ago
... well considering that she was born and raised in Japan with her parents nationally her alliance is all Japanese so it makes sense for her to take to it regardless of ethnicity <3 <3

@furyflame34 neither is verbal. call him korean-japanese i guess
Knightmare2k6 1 year ago
@furyflame34 :Um.......she was born in Japan so that makes her Japanese. Yes her dad who is black is from USA and her mom is Asian who is from Korea, But that does not change her current nationality since she was born in Japan. You don't necessarily have to be Asian or Oriental to be Japanese.
SlashingThunder 11 months ago 5
@SlashingThunder Her race is Black-Korean, but her nationality is Japanese. furyflame34 was probably talking about her race and not her nationality. Nationality and race are two separate things.

Most 2nd generation Koreans don't speak Korean, and most likely, Crystal Kay is a 3rd generation Korean, so it's expected that she doesn't speak it at all. The only Zainichis that speak Korean in Japan are the ones that go to a Korean school.

Shes Blasian - Black and Asian, aka Japanese Beyonce, nothing special with her voice, but her appearance is what sells the albums. Kinda lame when considering half of the "bad" singers in her category are better than her...but hey you work with what cards the Gods give you.

@PrisonCipher OGM nothign speical with her ovice !?? r u seriulsy go and k=sliten to her songs hard ot say , konna chikaku de, ko ni orchita !! and tell em wehter she can sing or not !! her voicce is 10 ,000x betta thean most JPOP stars today
thtJPOPgirl 1 year ago
@thtJPOPgirl , There isn't anything special, especially if you compare her to BoA or Yoshika, do i need to go down a very big list of artists that are better then her vocally?. I can switch to american singers or keep going with chinese or korean or even japanese singers. Crystal Kay is a face with a decent voice, she isn't on the level of Mariah Carey or even Christina Aguilera.
PrisonCipher 1 year ago
@PrisonCipher yh she may be no mariah carey, at least her voice beats most jpop stars out there today .. regradless i luve her loads
thtJPOPgirl 1 year ago
@PrisonCipher Are you shitting me? Crystal Kay VOCALLY Is better than most of the J-pop stars out there! This song may not show off her vocal ability, but there are plenty of other songs that do. I like boA and all, but half the time she sounds like she's choking on all her American Cd's that didn't sell. Go ahead and compare her to other Asian singers because I'm sure she will be out most of them. Okay she may be no Mariah Carey, but how many singers have a vocal range that extensive?
meljosh92 1 year ago
Also, there are different kinds of singers. Christina is known for having a powerful voice, while crystal has a softer falsetto.

Lonelyeco 1 year ago
@Lonelyeco J-rock can be scary I agree but that's the crappy visual and oshare kei stuff like SuG and -OZ-. I urge you to try out some alternative and garage rock like DOES and Asian Kung–Fu Generation :) they won't scare you!
KraXoom 1 year ago
@KraXoom not really, what's so scary about TMGE or Siam Shade? Penicillin? Luna Sea? I agree with selphiexfairy, pop rock in Japan is in general pretty generic, no different than pop rock in the US.
moxxfactor 1 year ago
@moxxfactor, huh? I wasn't opening a debate with my comment so please spare me the lessons. Besides a lot of the bands you've mentioned have been around since the early 90's and were more extreme with their attire then they are now. That's what's frightens some, the extreme wardrobes, but these guys hardly classify nowadays as visual-kei although that's how they debut. And who said anything about the US?
KraXoom 1 year ago
@KraXoom right. you can reply yet you don't want others to have an opinion. so that's why you're posting on a public website. if you don't want a debate, why the lengthy retort? hypocrite. if you want, i'll make sure next time i don't reply to you specifically, so you're not bothered with an reply announcement email.
moxxfactor 1 year ago
@Lonelyeco Lol, i just read your comment and what you said about JRock made me laugh. It's because all the American JRock fans listen to a lot of the underground/indie bands and Visual Kei groups (in which the talent varies A LOT...usually on the lower end) that are unknown to actual Japanese. But the actual rock music that's popular in Japan isn't quite so scary. The most popular Japanese rock band is probably L'Arc~en~Ciel, if you want to check them out. Just thought I'd let you know. (:
selphiexfairy 1 year ago
@selphiexfairy Thank you. I've heard of L'Arc~en~Ciel. In fact my first time discovering them was on Myspace because they had sent me a friend request and I was shocked. Yeah, I like their music. But someone had shown me a video of some JRock video and I couldn't even really look at it. She thought the person was cute, well, hot in her words.
