Thanks for the post, I love this song. She starts out sounding like Tom Waits, whom I admire. The writer of this song is John Prine, and he may not have long to live. He has been battling throat problems for years, and although he has cancer , he is still touring , perhaps one more time. So if you get a chance ,maybe at a show or just at his website,take a second, stop by and say ,"Hello in there!" PEACE,LOVE and HAPPINESS TO ALL

This is done as an acting piece. She is interpreting it as a woman who is holding on to dear life as everything she has is gone. Trying to find herself and define what she is. I think this is a beautiful performance. You can't look at it as Bette, look at it as an old lady singing about painful lonliness. This song and performance always makes me cry. Its genious.

She doesn't always try to sing pretty, she tries to find the person who is singing the song, and let that character sing. She's an actor first, singer second. This is moving, and sad, and beautiful.
