@Ray0X0 This occurs because in his fingers Thinking and Feeling, Thought and Emotion, are only different sides of the same coin: the best conditions for an universal approach to music
Interesting quetion, as most commentators just pass over it. Réplique comes after Coquette and repeats its dotted motives. So it may well be a conversation between fragments of Eusebius ("Ich liebe Dich"?) and get a a dismissive wave of the hand as the "reply", i.e., "réplique". Also interesting is the use of French titles, although I don't know if they are from the original
That said, or speculated on, Arrau is really wonderful here.
Another demonstration of pianism that...while more conservative & mechanistic tempo-wise
than the musicians of Schumann's era... IS VASTLY MORE EXPRESSIVE & interesting than the pianists like Richter,Ashkenazy,& Argerich who play this music intensely & beautifully but without interest, individuality or psychological depth.
i'm very impressed by arrau, though i prefer his debussy's performances... sometimes, in pierrot for example it gets a little agressive with his bass voice, and you can't really hear the "hauptstimme". Anyway a briliant artist in that play. I still prefer Michelangeli in the Carnaval.
You should hear the Novaes (1950s) if possible. Also Hess (late 1930s) and Moiseiwitsch (early '60s--there may be an earlier one also). Not everyone liked Arrau's Debussy. I loved it--liquid and elegant (I remember his Reflets dans l'eau in a NY recital in 1980) and wonderfully subtle at times
@jewish1972 Sometimes the pieces that seem less difficult because they aren't as technically demanding can be the most difficult to perform well, partially because of the complacency that people feel as they play them...
Chile is a country of many great artists. This is an outstanding video of the Schumann Carnaval. There is another great performance of this piece by the Chilean Patricio Molina, you guys should hear it!

One of the most celebrated pianists of all time and rightly so. Superbe technical achievment and complete sincerity.

Hmm...I can't quite figure out what Replique is supposed to be (not musically; in other artistic contexts or as in a real person).
