i was a butcher/fishmonger and we used to spend an hour every day picking worms out of cod i dnt think ive ever seen a piece without them but if cook properly they will die. but it true ask any fishmonger at ur local supermarket. enjoy eating cod people:)
I just found 1 of those worms in my flounder tonight. After doing some reading, they are very common and everyuone says to just pick them out. They also say as long as the fish is cooked to 160 degrees the worm is harmless if eaten. I understand all that, but it still doesn't make me feel good when I see it. It turned my stomach.
Hold any fresh fish....especially cod, close to and in front of a strong light source. Look for the faint sign of a circular shape. Usually about 1/4 inch across when coiled up. Take a knife and cut that area away. Look at the surface for any worm on the surface or partially imbedded. Cut or wash it away. Virtually ALL cod fish has worms. It doesn't matter where you buy it.. If you've been buying, cooking, eating cod and you've never seen them, you just didn't know they were there.
I also bought cod at Costco and found this worm. I have a friend who was fisherman and here is his answer about it:
Cod almost always has worms, but if they're treated properly they're not visible. When I fished, if I was going to eat a cod, I'd kill it and not clean it for a day. The guts stay warmer, and the worms go into there so they're removed when the fish is dressed. I think the heat from cooking it might kill it, but I personally wouldn't take the chance.
Wow, I had no idea there was such a thing. I went and bought 2 pounds at the Fresh Market fresh from the fish deli. And while my hubby was standing there waiting on the others frying he glanced down and saw a light red stream on the very last fillet and touched it with a fork in his hand and it started squiggling. And he's 62 years old and has only liked cod fish, and never seen one before in his life nor knew they got them! To say the least he's returning all the fish cooked and not, tomorrow.
i know its not nice but shit happens,i work packing fish ,cod worms very common.I still eat fish but not cod,at the end of the day do you ever REALLY know what your eating. What the eye don't see,the heart can't grieve.Bon Appetie
I found one of these in a package of cod today. Just one, searched the fish thoroughly. Mom would have tossed the whole fish if seafood wasn't so ungodly expencive where we live; the effinng coast. All we can fish here is salmon. I hate salmon.
i went to a fish resturant yesterday and i had cod wrapped in salmon.lovely but i was down to about a walnut size and found 5 of these worms.ok they had been cooked but when i called the waitress she said thats normal!great.but if i threw up on the table i guess she wouldnt have got that was normal for me after eating worms
If I see anything like that in a store I'm shopping at, They'll know what I found in their meat. Because I'd say it where everyone could hear me!!!! That's not good...AT ALL!!!!! Gross..
Tell you one thing I will not eat all kinds of sushi anymore. I will still eat tuna raw because they say that it is the only fish that you can eat without freezing first. This is what the u.s.d.a. said.I caught so many cod fish and yes I saw the worms but they seemed to be dead and I cut them out. I did also deep fry the fish but darn that shit is scary.
parasites die in few ways. for food i'd take deep frozen food because it's one of the way that kills them all. but it has got to be real low temp like -25c or lower. fresh sushi has it's eggs and you don't see them. just eat everything you like and deworm every 3 months or so. seek a doctor advice. they are every where. don't starve yourself jackie.
Ok, my expertise of study is Microbiology, and I need to clear some facts. I'm not sure what genus and species this cod parasite is. However, many parasites are able to produce Cysts. Cysts are basically dormant eggs that can survive extreme temperatures, and the low pH (acid) of the human stomach. The cysts are then able to hatch. So cooking WILL NOT kill the cysts.
Now this is only if the specific parasite is a cyst former, which I don't know for cod, I would have to research cod parasites.
I've found so may of these (albeit cooked) in my fish over the years ~ I'm on the brink of quiting certain species of white fish altogether. I found one that was 2cms long just days ago ~ The biggest yet!
Also, if you 'love the idea' of worms in your food ~ check out what's guaranteed to be floating around at the bottom of the bowl in your Porcini (Cep) Mushroom stock the next time you soak some in boiling water.
Yep, those things really are pesky little maggots!
Thank you so much for writing "as long as the fish is fully cooked, the parasite poses no threat to humans" The kid I babysit just found some in our dinner after I ate my share I thought I was going to die or worse have to pay a hospital bill! I could cry right now I feel so gross...
Cod worms are found all over those fish. You just need to tweeze them out. I go to the culinary institute of america and they have us tweeze out the cod worms from all the fish.
this is the kind of stuff we need to see broadcast on public tv, instead of watching brittney dodge paparazzis. this is information that people should be aware of. parasites of all sorts are no joke to health.
actually people in other countries look to find these worms in the local fish..If they see them then they know the fish is fresh...so be grateful that your gettin quality fish...
eeeeee,I'm gonna start growing my own greenhouse vegetables washing them thoroughly and to the devil w/any kind of meat, Youtube has ruined me for life. If its not some totally cute little pig or utterly trusting calf licking somebody's face, then its worms and Mother of Mouse only knows what else lurking in the flesh of said totally cute and trusting critters who we repay by slaughtering and eating them...oh I can't take it any more. lol
i just cooked white fish today and i left a piece later to fry for my husband, to find these worms, meaning i already ingested them. I AM FUKIN NEVER GNA EAT FISH AGAIN IN MY LIFE, IM SICK . ERGGG, these are all squished up in your fillet o fish in mcdonalds
My dad always say "Eat the cod, it's not going to harm u" and I always say" Dad, fish contain more parasites than any other vertebrae on earth! i'm not about to eat something that could be infested with tapeworms!!!" and then I saw this and it proved i was right and my dad saw this and still didn't believe me. HE LOVES FISH I DON'T
Thats a common form of sea lice... i do alot of Codfishing on Georges Bank and when they are really in dense schools they tend to have a few on them on they're skin... which eventually ends up in the fillet during cleaning... dont worry though... fry the sucker they're delicious!

the worst they can do if ingested is stomach pain for a day but otherwise they'll die by your stomach acid.

Either you're an idiot, trying to spread stupidity, or you really don't know what I'm about to tell you.
If you **COOK THE FISH** YOU WILL BE FINE, EVEN IF THE FISH HAD WORMS/EGGS.
Akubarix 4 years ago
Some eggs/micro organisms have the ability to HATCH still within 24 to 48 hrs, even after
cooking/broiling/frying the fish. So their is no reason to call this person
an idiot or trying to spread stupidity.
dbootsthediva 4 years ago
No. If properly heated it'd KILL the eggs. So you're trying to tell me that something that is dead can hatch eh? Go you.
Akubarix 4 years ago
Fly eggs are one that have the ability to hatch after the fly is dead.
