@kbckiwi Yes it does, but I am not sure it shows it for your whole distance. I think it's just for part.... And I almost think it starts over when you leave that screen and come back to it. I don't find it terribly useful.
I will be using one for Ultralight flying across the US. The price is right for the GPSMAP 60 but wasn't sure if I should pay the extra $100 and get the CSX. Do you think I would be able to see the maps better if they were in color? And also the 60 just has internal memory. Any advice? thanks.
This comes with just a weak basemap of the US so you're going to have to buy the detailed street maps if you want that kind of info and to store a large section of the US, you'll need lots of extra memory.
@bradtube1 hey im just wondering i have the garmin gps CSX and have bought the extra memory but ive watched ur video and u say when u highlight the maps with the map tool well mine wont do that for some reason do i have to buy the City Navigator for the detailed streets because thats what i want is detailed streets of were im going ect.
@lilricky2515 I admire this function where you draw out your routes on the laptop and send it to the GPS. Do you know if any of the etrex Venture HC has this function?
hey whats up i just got my garmin gps yesterday and i have the garmin world map on it but i want the inland lake one I'll be using it more for fishing trips and the prob is i live in south america so do they have it for south america inland lakes??
It comes with a useless basemap. You need to buy the maps. Not sure what is available for South America though and if you buy an inland lakes map, not sure if you'll get turn by turn street directions. Call Garmin and they'll tell you. You might have to wait on hold awhile, but they're very good at giving you advice once you get through.
I've seen the Colorado (didn't like the scroll wheel thing) and the Oregon - screen seemed dark and you can accidentally press buttons on the touch screen if you have it in you pocket, but I'm thinking the Oregon would be next one, but I'm waiting to see if something better comes out. I bought a Nuvi 500 and it's really dumbed down as far as you can save tracklogs, don't think you can upload routes (but I might be wrong) and battery life of the Nuvi 500 is less than 5 or 6 hours.
The map isn't great. I haven't seen a Tom Tom, but I suspect the larger the screen, the better.
I know two people who recently bought a Garmin Colorado and a Garmin Oregon. Both screens when in battery (not cigarette lighter) were VERY hard to read.
And the guy who have the Oregon said it lost the signal under dense tree cover in the woods.
The Colorado seems similar in reception to the 60CSX.
hey i'm thinking about getting the 60CSx. I'm moving to Seoul, South Korea and will be expected travel to different addresses in different districts of the city several times a day - on a 125cc.
my question is - how well, and in how much detail, does the gps graphically represent street/urban maps? the only gps i've used before was a TomTom rectangular in-car one, so how well does it compare with that? oh, and i also would like to use it a pedestrian occasionally too (again, in the city).
Both the Colorado and Oregon do paperless geocaching, which I'm dying to get.
But... Garmin just came out with the Garmin NUVI 500 - which does paperless geocaching and which I suspect might have a better/bigger screen. I'm dying to see a video or meet someone with one to see if it gets as good reception as the 60CSX.
But - that's what I'm considering for my next GPS. It's also pretty cheap compared to Colorado or Oregon.
The Csx is great for trails and marine use. It is really tedious to use in the truck. For any on road use the NUVI is a touch screen worth having. Much easier!!
That's cool ... but what happen when you "missing" one of the roads? Stop helping you or warning you ... like ... "you're in wrong road" ... etc ... I need more info please.
I dont like the fact that the basemap cannot be changed. If you buy it in the usa the basemap is for usa and cannnot be changed for europe. Much better of using a pda and choosing youre own software
Great video. I am glad I found it. So far, I still think this is going to be my GPS upgrade (from my etrex-yellow). Have you tried doing an area calculation with it?
Actually, yes I have used the area calculation function, but just to find the area contained within a loop I rode on my bike. I've wanted to do it on like an acre of land somewhere to see what it would calculate, but haven't done so yet.
Finally got my 60CSx (from eBay). It's a great device. I'm taking it everywhere I go to get a good feel and learn its many features. I don't see why some people say it's difficult to use. I find it very easy to use. Already downloaded Topo2008 into it and the latest software version from Garmin (3.5). Soon I'll start geocaching. Cheers!
I finally bought 60csx, so far I'm very happy with it. I found 3 geocaches, (GC13896, GCX5RJ, and GCGNME) and it was very easy to find using the compass feature on the gps. Also bought City Nav Australia and it was well worth it.
Wow! Australia! That's pretty cool. That first cache is only 10,403.9 miles from my home coordinates. Doubt I'll be getting that one anytime soon! :-)
You definitely "could" use your friend's City Navigator disk if #1 - he has only unlocked it on one GPS, and #2 - he doesn't mind you using his second unlock code.
So I guess that means I have to purchase city navigator instead of borrowing from my friend.
Did your Mapsource program come with the city-select CD? Or do I have to purchase it separately? As far as I know the 60csx don't come with mapsource program am I correct? Thanks for replies
I believe all Garmin handheld GPS's come without any mapping software. The basemap that comes with the unit doesn't do much for you.
I made a web page with recommendations on which units have the highly sensitive SiRF chip and what you might want to buy with them.
Click on the link in the description on the right.
The Garmin eTrex series is smaller, lighter, but doesn't have nearly as many buttons so you have to do everything through menus, which is a pain (in my opinion).
Oh, this is also intersting... I thought I might be able to to help a very good friend of mine out so they wouldn't have to buy the software. So what I did was - I took their micro-SD memory card, put it in my GPS, downloaded maps to it, then took it out and put it in their GPS and it came right up and said it couldn't be used because the maps weren't unlocked or something like that. So anyway ... I don't like their BS, but the do make a very good GPS so I guess I have to put up with it.
Very informative video, thanks for upload, could you explain what do you mean by 'unlock the maps', do you have to unlock it after you load it in your gps or before you load it into the gps?
Garmin used to let you buy their mapping products and use them on as many GPS units as you wanted. But I guess they decided the could sell more software if they changed it so you can only use the software on up to 2 GPS units.
In order to download maps to your GPS, you must unlock the software - which involves installing the software, connecting your GPS and I you also have to be connected to the internet. I'm not sure what Garmin does, but does that kind of explain it for you?
great video!
i am looking to get one of these for on my dual sport motorcycle.. i mainly need it for a speedometer. how big is the speedo function?

@bradtube1 Nope, you don't need to buy any maps, Garmin GPS's support free mapsets as well! Just do a google search for "free gps maps"

I have many gps s and have discovered that a dedicated mobile gps is by far the best for use inside a car.
A small specialized hiking gps is best for hiking. etc...
A phone gps is fine for walking about the town, but is really bad for car use or hiking.
