Moral of the story - if you live in a Tsunami zone, build out of concrete with foundations securely tied down. All those wooden houses/buildings with no foundation tie-downs were turned into matchsticks in a nanosecond.

So buildings that are built to resist tsunami are death traps in strong earthquakes and then again in the same area they experience typhoons. So they got to either build for the most likely disaster or find a way of designing a building that can handle every kind of disaster. Very hard to do. Better to create a good early warning system and add that to a population well drilled in emergency response.

A properly designed concrete building is inherently safer than wood framed housing. And if you are in a well-know Tsunami zone, the idea that early warning system will work is delusional fantasy - no way to evacuate large numbers of people in time to make much of a difference.

@candr Thanks for the info. What baffles me is that there were several cars going down the street (at the top left of the screen, at 0.22). Those people would have been killed or injured, with the force of the wave. If they knew a tidal wave would follow the earthquake, they all should have fled. Helicopters could have been sent off shore to confirm the tsunami and then warn the citizens. But it seems, as you say, that most people did evacuate.

I know of one person that told me foolishly "Its just water, they can swim out" a lot of folk actually believe that,even after this. As for the copters,they were out there, but waves are hard to see until they get near, ships did report it, but they only had minutes to get out of the areas and it was a very big area, and one this size had not hit in decades.

You think God plays with the weather for fun, so sorry but he does not do that, nor does he interfere with physics like gravity etc. God created the earth and it functions as it does based on the laws of physics. 1. There are like 5 different videos, not one.
2. Those were different towns and not just the 'Miyako'
3. The first video compared to the last video are NOT the same place.
