Just watch him for the first time on Youtube, when he performed at the White House...I love his music and he is awesommmmeeeeee....Thanks for the clip
Heard the live version of this from a New Years Eve Recording that I got off Rhapsody--sat here tonight with tears in my eyes listening to this gem. Warren is such an underappreciated genius. It's a shame he doesn't get the respect and recognition someone of his talent deserves. Recently discovered Govt Mule and have become their biggest prommoter.
He is such an amazing artist.. every time i hear his voice or hear him play just draws me in. unfortunately i was late hearing his music.. didnt know who he was until Beautiful broken came out and missed years of listening to him play and sing.
i never heard him sing or even play, before; i had heard he was a good picker, so when i came across this i thought, okay, this guy's probably gonna play well but his vocals are gonna be awful; especially since ronnie had such a charasmatic voice. but this cat really has the pipes. so many blues guitarists who try to sing the lead vocals really suck. they can't pull it off, but the picking kind of makes up for it, i. e. roy buchanan and the like. but this guy could be JUST a lead singer.
@1skullduggery Yeah, indeed. There's singers and there's players, but finding the best of both worlds in one package isn't very common. This guy's got the chops with equal pipes to boot. A true talent, that's truly appreciated by all whom can figure that out. Just a lot of people out there whom consume music without knowing what it takes. Not just about bobbing the head up and down and enjoying it, not at least in my book.
@gblueslover2 "This guy's got the chops with equal pipes to boot."
Would you be so kind and explained to me what does that phrase mean? I'm preparing to my english test, and thought to myself that some rare phrases would come in handy.
@Dez1an OK... I removed my initial comment after I saw where you're from. Thought you were being sarcastic. OK, here you go... Chops= Related to instrument playing ability. In short, one's experience level combined with their creativity. Pipes= Their throat, their singing ability.
@gblueslover2 Yap, it did - I would never come up with the idea. For me, chops are fried slices of meat, breaded and spiced. Understandably it sounded weird to me;)
@Dough3977 I am not sure where this version is at, but they did simple man with Travis Tritt at Christmas Jam. Travis is hammered and forgets the word.
Just saw Warren's new band the other night. Nice outdoor show by the river. He didn't dissapoint as usual. He reminds me of Garcia in that the music just seems to ooze out of him. He is of it and it of him. Highlights were a nice "Change Is Gonna Come" the old Sam Cooke tune. "Invisible" smoked and they really stretched it out longer than I'd heard it before. "Fire In The Kitchen" was also stellar. He's withoput a doubt one of the most vital, outstanding guitarst/singers of today. Go see him!!
@09jackstraw my husband and i just saw warren with the new band in cleveland at house of blues...also did change is gonna come....just amazing!! and i agree....go see him any chance you get!!
God Bless Warren Haynes!!! Keeping real music alive. You can tell that he loves playing and has a passion for it. Ill bet he will be just as happy playing in a garage with friends than in a stadium.
Maybe I am biased, but I like this version better with Warren singing over RVZ. Now, I respect and love RVZ, but I just love Warren and he does this song COMPLETE justice.. this is no half hearted attempt at a cover, he put his soul into it. He always does. One of the hardest working men in rock and roll.
I've always felt you can judge a musician/group by the number of other people that want to perform with them. I don't think there are many more performers out there that play with more people than Warren. This song is forcing me to grab a beer and hit the drums. Mrs. Haynes. Can Warren come out and pplay?
wow, such a long time ago hard to remember.they played two sets and we managed to sorta hide-out and see the second show for free.by that time we were totally trashed.i"d never heard of warren until i saw that show.been a fan ever since

I've rarely ever heard this song covered that I thought the band playing the song was doing Skynyrd any justice at all. But Warren Haynes's version of Simple Man is totally fantastic!! Very well done, by a man that's got a great voice, and is a great picker!!
I think I may have jammed with this guy. He's a really gifted guitarist. The guy that I met that looks like and plays like this guy has been playing since he was 5.
I saw LSkyn ever time they came to Houston in the 70's. There's just something.... the Allmans, Marsh Tucker... you can't understand if you grew up in Calif or the north... the torch passes. Now I listen to Warren and Derek. Great, great talents. Thanx, Glen
@2253glen i saw them once in houston as well i was young but none the less we went lol cant ask anymore from em this texascity boy loves that soulful playing!!!
@mrcoolpimpice boy I couldn't agree more, I'm a Les Paul nut and this is one of the best I've ever seen. I'm not a fan of Warren but I love this song.
@efhsa8731 - No my friend, Scorpion's song sounds like Simple Man, not the other way around. I know you didn't mean it like that, but it is a huge disrespect to one of the best rock bands to ever walk this earth to say that one of their masterpieces sounds like a Scorpion song. Long live Skynyrd nation!
Skynyrd was the best rock band ever walked this earth, and this is a DARN good S man cover, best I've ever heard, of course what ya expect , its Warren.
The Dead are my second favorite band or tied with first...I hope Warren and Bob Weir do more together.
@rotagen5 Amen brother. The Dead, Skynyrd, and The Allman Brothers is all I need. I love alot of different music, but I couldn't live without those three bands.
Warren is great, so's Van Zant, and Gary, there should be no argument there. Neither is better than the other, they each have a different take on the song.
Finally my band is getting some recognition! Have loved them for so long! I like this version, but I like Government Mule's version where they sing live at the Roxy in Atlanta better! I also am a huge Skynyrd fan, but I must say when it comes to this song Mule has em' beat! And please can we not use the band Shinedown in comparison to these guys. They have no where near the talent...thank you!
Now that tht is cleared up. Warren holds every song by everyone he covers close and makes it his own. He may and most likely is a better overall guitarist than most any guitarist you can list, but to say he did Simple Man better then Skynyrd is blasfamous. It is only his take on the song, delivered with all the soul he has. If you have never heared this man play, don't post your comparisons. You know nothing of. what your talking about.
@StSimonOfTrent Get a grip are you a total dumb fuck there is no way Haynes is a better singer than Ronnie Van Zant and as for playing guitar i would argue that he is a totally different style of guitar player to Rossington, Collins and Gaines !! In my personal opinion i think Allen Collins and Steve Gaines are better guitarist to Warren Haynes - But each to thier own opinion !!
Never heard this version before. Entirely in the spirit of the original - beautifully played and sung by Mr Haynes here.

There's a livewire jammin' & dancin' in the skies. I miss you darlin'. I wear the Gov't Mule jacket ya gave me still. Seen Warren couple weeks ago, thought of you. RIP Mark!!....Ride on till ya git there....
@captdcc62 shinedown is a descent cover band but that's bout it...they do somewhat justice tho...gimme some whiskey and i'm down on a boring sat night...
Warren is the best guitarist and one of the best vocalists alive at this moment in my opinion. he plays and sings with a passion and feel that you just dont hear very often. brilliant!
@hollowpointred , yes, he is one of the most COMPLETE (guitar and vocal) guitarist BUT (ha ha) let me remind you that Robin Trower is on stage all the time:) In my opinion he is the best guitarist but he doesn't sing. The other good guitarist are: Julian Sas and Walter Trout. I love "Cortez the killer" played by Warren - what a dynamite and feel!
@ducinator1 To say that he is one of the best vocalists alive at this moment would be an outright lie.
And it is about soul and heart-touching, but that doesn't make him a good vocalist, it make him a good communicator through music. And the difference is that the best vocalists alive today may not communicate as well as he does, but they are still better vocalists than him.
@obubison2014 yea i've listened to any kind of music and every singer just makes me feel good a time or two then i discovered Warren Haynes, i'm hooked you know... That's the singing quality, that's the power of his voice.
Please look inside things, don't just see the outward. (he can hit high notes or do the wide range incredibly).
@obubison2014 you're arguing semantics. "Best" is a relative term when it comes to art. I'd still agree that there are better pure vocalists out there though. Hard to argue against Bobby McFerrin
Awesome. I don't need to comment on Warren's skills, we all know he is one of the greatest musicians of all time..
But also Matt Abts's atomic-clock precision timing and powerful attack (or whatever you call it for drums, I hope you get the point) suit this song very very well.
man! this is good, realy good, but how could anyone say warren makes the original's writer/ guitar player sound lame??? some one needs to think before slavering such a comment....i do think warren is up there with the best of'em today and for some time yet, but the guys who wrote this track had massive success the world over & over & over again to this day and for ever....
Just watch him for the first time on Youtube, when he performed at the White House...I love his music and he is awesommmmeeeeee....Thanks for the clip

@hollowpointred He is an amazing vocalist, no doubt about that.
But to say he is one of the best vocalists alive at this moment would be an outright lie.

@obubison2014 it's all about soul, it's all about heart-touching, dude. Warren Haynes defenitely owns it. No doubt...

PeacexD

@obubison2014 you're arguing semantics. "Best" is a relative term when it comes to art. I'd still agree that there are better pure vocalists out there though. Hard to argue against Bobby McFerrin

@obubison2014 And to say anyone gives a fuck what you think would also be an outright lie as well.

Awesome. I don't need to comment on Warren's skills, we all know he is one of the greatest musicians of all time..
But also Matt Abts's atomic-clock precision timing and powerful attack (or whatever you call it for drums, I hope you get the point) suit this song very very well.

One of the most underrated influences on American music. Dead, Mule, Allman, solo and collaborations. Wow.

man! this is good, realy good, but how could anyone say warren makes the original's writer/ guitar player sound lame??? some one needs to think before slavering such a comment....i do think warren is up there with the best of'em today and for some time yet, but the guys who wrote this track had massive success the world over & over & over again to this day and for ever....
i do love gov't mule though....great cover.
