They had a beautiful relationship of friendship :) they were like brother and sister. A curiosity: The true name of Mickey is Joseph and (this last I have read it, I don't know if is true) Judy said that the love of her life was the director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and her unique son is call Joseph (Joey). Coincidence?
@DebsTasha45 I am not sure but I think it was Micky s mother who asked Micky why he didnt marry Judy and he replied, I would be marrying my sisther or words simular. There was love and bond that last for life and beyound, some marriages arent that tight. I am sad for his loss, you can hear the love but I am glad he had the love and friendship some people PRAY they can find. RIP Judy. I love you Micky
Judy and Mickey should have married :) If you watch the video 'Mickey Loves Judy Still' that TheManThatGetAway put up, you can really see that Mickey loved Judy, and that Judy loved Mickey too :)
Mickey may have been the only one who could have saved her but u cant do that to yourself and say ...what might have been. u just dont know. But it is obvious that he loved her.
I have enjoyed these two talents for years!!! I never get tired of watching Andy Hardy (Mickey Rooney) and Judy together. How blessed to have had so much fun as young actors!!!! And, I'm blessed being able to watch!!! Bravo!!!!
Judy & Mickey will be two of those people that will always be forever, I think they shared a love more close than any friends. He always spoke so highly of Judy, and drew on personal experiences.
I feel personally that Mickey Rooney was deeply in love with Judy Garland` perhaps so taken by her magic and talent he placed her on a pedistal to this day. I think
Mickey is around 90 years old now and still praising Judy every single day.
@collgoff it was more like a best friend relationship. the romance kinda died off and they stayed friends, i heard they lost touch when judy started kinda goin downhill with her life. its nice tho he remembers her like the great person and great talent she was/is.
Mickey is half right in the ending, Judy Garland wasn't one of the best, she was the best. Mickey and her were the greatest on screen pair in the history of television and entertainment combined in my personal opinion.
How Mick LOVED this girl! What a dear comraderie, the "sister" he never had, the "love he'd searched for"... He speaks from the heart, whenever her name comes up..That's not just "for the moment", its a "4-ever thing", the 2 of them!
@astaire10 AMEN! I'm sorry they never got together, but she said once that sometimes he could be an absolute pest. She was prone to laughing on set in her younger years, and he'd deliberately stand where she could see him and make her laugh! They were the closest of friends, though, and I can tell that Mickey misses her terribly. God Bless Mickey and Judy!! I love them!!
@astaire10 I wish they had gotten married. They were soulmates and if they had married she would probably still be alive today and he would not have been married 8 times.
"It's a great big universe and we're all really puny ! we're just tiny little specks about the size of mickey rooney ! It's big and black and icky and we're all really picky ! It's a BIG universe and we're nooot !"
I feel sorry for Judy. I mean, in most movies with Mickey Rooney, she always plays the girl in love with him but he just thinks of her as a "pal" and nothing more. He wasn't older than her by that much.
alaric, I agree that perhaps Mickey Rooney could have helped her if he loved her so much, but he seems like pretty much of a narcissist himself, and besides, Garland probably was a difficult person to help, bent on self-destruction as she was. Such a shame, she was so brilliant, yet so tortured.
You may be right. It's nice to have many commenting on what I had thought, disagree or agree you all were sincere and not nasty in the least i appreciate that.

If Mickey Rooney loved Judy as much as he claimed to love her throughout her life time he surely could have found a way to help her. He was too busy with his own career which by the way didn't do to well after they broke. Like a sister...HA ! He was probably gay and thats the reason he got married so often, he was actually looking for a man.
According to Mickey in his autobiography, he did reach out a hand to help her later in her life but as is too often the sad reality (especially in cases of self-destructive addictions), one person cannot always save another from themselves.
@alaric59 You can NOT help someone UNLESS they want to be helped. All the love in the world will not change that fact. Judy dearly loved her 3 childern and it was not enough to get her to stop. Mickey gay, what kind of drug are YOU on
Mickey is a great story teller. He met her at MGM not when she was with the Gumm sisters. Judy sang ZING first at MGM. Judy wasn't drom Iowa but grand rapids Minnesota.. But regardless he loved her
@nimbusmiranda She was left handed, but she played tennis with her right hand, and for publicity stills, they just had her write with whatever hand was next to the black board. There, Mickey and Judy were just posing. She may have been ambidextrous because she played different sports with her right hand, as do I. I eat with my left, but write with my right.

It's so sweet to see Mickey get that twinkle in his eye whenever he talks about Judy! I love the story about the first time he saw her sing with the Gumm Sisters. I had always assumed that the first time he had seen Judy was on the MGM lot! I REALLY want to read his autobiography, 'Life is Too Short'! O.K., I'm getting a little emotional now... talk amongst yourselves... :-)
I read Life is Too Short about 15 yrs ago. It was a good read. Apparently, Judy did make a move on him at one time, but he got away. I really don't think so. Rooney was boinking way too often. He was a player, a typical-male sex-crazed scumbag in a way.
Nonetheless I like him, and I think maybe he really did love her - and just never admitted it. He was too into "lookers", hotties.
