Thompson, while alive, did in fact threaten graphic, bodily harm to Garry Trudeau several times over the years, ever since the Duke character first showed up in "Doonesbury" in 1974. Trudeau claims to have taken the threats seriously enough to never attempt meeting Thompson in person.
