I just watched "Dive Bomber" after ordering it on Amazon, and it choked me up when I saw the Devastators in flight, knowing that many of their crews would be killed and entombed with their planes in the Pacific in less than a year from the movie's release. If you guys get a chance, read the book "A Dawn Like Thunder", which reflects back on the actions of Torpedo Squadron Eight.
Thanks, it's on Turner Classic Movies every so often, titled "Dive Bomber" starring Errol Flynn. Unfortunately there is very little more of these great carrier scenes. The planes are also interesting, Devastators, Vindicators, a Brewster Buffalo, biplane Helldivers, and trainers galore. Look up the movie “Dive Bomber” and go through the Wikipedia file. All sorts of great info on the scenes, etc, Flynn had a pilot’s license and was forbidden from any fun stuff other then taxi the trainer.
@Davis4037 dauntless had folding wings, but this was a prewar movie, i'd say it was probably a valtee vindicator, which was replaced in service with the SBD.
@kdraper2007 Trust me, ive read about the SBD Dauntless, and i believe but may be wrong that the vindicator was a biplane. Anyways the SBD Dauntless was made to have non folding wings, allowing to pull out of more punishing dives that its future counterpart, the SB2C Helldiver
Very nice film about the flight operations in pre-WWII. It is funny to me that todays US Navy use the same procedures and the same color shirts to specific job. For instance, the plane handlers wearing the yellow shirt which it's still in use, the chock and chain crew (blue shirts) also still in use, and they're using the same hand signals. Been there and done that but with the Hornets, the Rhinos, the Vikings, the Prowlers, etc. in USS Kitty Hawk
wow now a day movie carrier in ww2 are fake and doesn't even look like a carrier at all, take a example of Attack on pearl harbor. but this movie is accurate
Barkon, The ww2 era aircraft were much harder due to the advancement in avionics of the jet age. It went from the guy with the paddles on the deck to computerized aids for the approach. It still takes a lot of skill.
I do wonder if it was easier or harder to land a slower prop-driven aircraft as opposed to a jet aircraft. Or, is it apples and orange as there were too many other differences such as arresting gear, navigation and other variables?
@barkon I am a private pilot but the only experience that I have landing on aircraft carriers are the different microsoft flight simulators. The easiest flightsim aircraft that I have landed on Aircraft carriers is the MAAMSIM TBF/TBM Avenger. The most difficult is the A-7E or the F-4J Phantom. The jets are more difficult because of the speed.
Great to see all this pre-war footage! Other films include "Hell Diver", "Son of a Sailor" (both filmed aboard Saratoga) and "The Flying Fleet", which was a silent film that included the Langley.
The Planes shown were the SB2U Vindicator from Bombing or Scouting 6 at 0:58, the Douglas TBD from Torpedo 6 at the beginning and a Brewster Buffalo from Fighting 6 at 1:11. Both the SB2U and horrific Buffalo thankfully were replaced by SBD Dauntlesses and F4F-3 Wildcats by December 7th 1941. Torpedo 6, under Commander Eudene Lindsey, retained their TBD's and lost 10 of 14 at Midway. Great rare video of the Big E
great movie...from the classic movie "Dive Bomber"..I got my DVD from ebay and I love this movie due to it awesome colors. The Brewster Buffaloe only combat in US hands was at Midway and they got slaughter by the Japanese Zero. They were also present in Burma mid Dec 1941 and also got beat up pretty badly. But in the hands of the Finns...they were warriors againsts the russian planes. Hats off to the finns pilots.
The grey single engine fighter, right at the end going by the LSO, is a Brewster Buffalo. The next shot, as it catches the hook, it had changed, they show a TBD Devastator. The Yellow and Silver airplane at :58 is a Vindicator
Beautiful footage and great editing. However, the yellow-and-silver planes are Douglass TBD Devastators in their pre-war colors, which are torpedo bombers that preceded the TBF. The all-grey plane photographed from the rear is a Grumman F4-F Wildcat. No TBFs or Dauntlesses are in this video, and no dive bombers.
Ok. I've been an avid amateur historian on WWII for a long time, but don't remember ever reading about the Vought Vindicator. Thanks for your comment. I see that you can now Google "vought vindicator." I'm familiar with F3-Fs and Devastators from the interim war period, but not these. Also, most WWII history barely mentions the Brewster Buffalo when referring to the Midway defense.

0:22, that can't be a dive bomber, because the dauntless's wings weren't made to fold

@Davis4037 Looks like the Douglas TBD Devastator

Also, the dauntless was the major dive bomber in 1941, but this also looks like a Devestator by the style of the cockpit
