One of the great performances by one of the great live acts EVER. If you do not own this album, don't tell anyone......and go buy it. The video is dark, but the performance is ridiculous - end of the show, all by himself....stud.
How ridiculous the idea of 'comments' become with this kind of thing - I consider myself very verbose and articulate, and there is simply no way I could put it into words. This is (INSERT PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF THIS SONG)

Id love to hear Gaslight Anthem do a cover of this. One of my all time favorite songs ever. Heard it in 05 on the D&D Tour and almost cried. Thanks Boss.
I've seen him twice. I'd love to see him again, but wish I could have seen him back in the beginning ...... tho I wasn't even born yet! :) LOOOOOOOVVVVVEEEEEE BRUUUUUUUCE!!!!!!
I've been a fan for a lot of years, I've seen him many times- from Giants Stadium to surprise appearances at the Pony. This concert is absolutely incredible, and this version of For You blows me away every time I hear it. As a musician, it's the song I wish I'd written. I'm with you Ross- gives me chills every time...
@SOUTHERNMAN45 Why do people have to label everything as "best" or not. It's impossible to do with Springsteen songs since so many of them are absolutely brilliant, but also because it's such a subjective exercise that it's pointless.
So fcking true, i'm 16 years old (raised with Bruce and named Bruce aswell) and all I do is listening to all these 70's concerts like Capitol Theatre, Hammersmith Odeon etcetera.
I even gave Bruce a hand @ the Pinkpop festival in the Netherlands at 30 may 2009. I stood in the pit with my father and when he saw me singing the chorus of The Promised Land he gave me a hand for about 10 minutes.
THAT will be my best moment in my life, ever, period. _O_
I saw him last summer with my 14 year old niece. i thought i might feel old, or she would feel like she was on a geriatric field trip. But she got it.... I always joked that Bruce was my spiritual leader (not really a joke actually) and she told me after the show that she understands why I say that. Age doesn't matter-- not mine, not hers, not his. Thank you Bruce.
I'm speakless. This song sends shivers down my spine, it is so...beautiful. It makes me feel completly calm and happy all inside. Thanks Boss, for making this masterpiece of music
@abracadabra32 She doesnt have anything to do with Bruce Springsteen. At least not to my knowledge. She was a 16 year old girl who commited suicide in 2008 after her boyfriend broke up with her through a text messagge. She hung herself. Supposedly Mariah Carey´s version of Without you was set on loop and still playing when she was found. I came across this story when I was trying to find out through the internet what this song is about.
@santajimi i think i read somewhere its about a rocky relationship, a girl with low self esteem depression and that, and a man trying to cope. im sure its about the girl attempting to take her own life, whether she succeeds or not i guess is up to you, leaves a image in your my tho of him finding her collapsed on the beach, and its up to him to play god, call for help or let her go " and the band they played the homecoming theme, as i caressed your cheek" love it.
i envy you seeing bruce in 73! when i die i think ill wake up in asbury park around that time!ha! p.s i think we should start building the churches now folks ha!
If you wake up in Asbury Park anytime soon you'll be waking up in the Ghetto! No doubt though, it is Bruce Land... Where the City meets the Sea... WHERE THE HOOD MEETS THE WATER. This song is unsurpassed.

Ok maybe he's not as good a singer as he was back then! But he makes up for playing 3hr shows and can anyone name a 60 year old who's played over 75 shows this year and still manages to do the knee-slide! Only the Boss can!
...btw I'm only 14 and saw him in Dublin in July! Man he blew me away!
Thank God for you and the new generation of Bruce fans. I first saw him in 1973, about 22 years before you were born. BTW I was in Ireland in May of 2007 for about 10 days. Your country is beautiful and the people the best.
good to see not everyone on youtube uses anonymity as an excuse for being nasty. I do genuinely envy you seeing Bruce in the early days, im a recent convert (about 2 years ago) and can honestly say my whole perspective on musc changed after getting into him. Especially after finally seeing him live at Glastonbury, closest thing to a religious experience ive ever had. Theres a Springsteen song out there for everybody.
this version nearly moved me to tears. Only the studio version has done that to me before. I'm a fuckin' 18 year old boy dude, this record speaks to me like no other.
Bruce is older, he hasn't gotten worse, or bad. He was like 25 when this was shot. Nobody has that intensity or that angst stuff when they're 60. Would be phony if they tried.
why are you all debating how good bruce is or was...just accept that he is awesome, respect him for all the pleasure he gives to us all and never take him for granted.
i think it might seem like bruce "isn't as good" as he once was, not because he isn't, but because we can't possibly be bowled over the way we were the first few times. My first show was MSG during the Darkness tour, and it blew my mind. Sure he's changed, but I just saw him with my 14 yr old niece, and she had the experience I had all those years ago. what's lost is not his talent; what's lost is that surprise and delight. You can only have a "first time" once.

This comment has received too many negative votesshow
he was a good singer then, ill agree hes terrible now. but this concert is the mecca of all concerts. best show ne band has ever put on. every song is a work of art- a masterpiece of rythm and soul. with nothing but the essence of everything good and right sang into it by bruce and played into it by the e street band. and this song is 5 million times better than the album version or any other version for that matter. i wish i could have been there. id give ne thing to go.
You will make allot of enemies with that statement!
I thought this concert was terrible in his vocal performance accept for this song.
But he took vocal lessons and by 1980 he was boosting his vocal performance! 1978 he was allot better vocally. I don not agree with you.
Now just like everybody else that is pushing up in age. He struggles some nights, but other nights its great! But the point is, its not about his vocals that have to be perfect! Its in the energy of the music and lyrics!
i completely agree, and he put a lot more energy into these songs from this show than anything recently. dont get me wrong, im not talkin shit about bruce, im just saying that people who say hes awesome now and better now than he was are completely full of shit and are in denial. how could a near 60 year old man put as good a show on as a 25 year old?
I agree with you. I love him now. But, when we were all youngsters growing up on the Jersey shore, he was brilliant. He's still brilliant. He was just more brilliant then. Most of us slow down when we're older. He's no exception. He still blows the doors off though.
But I still attend his shows and me and my friends cry through most of it!
Its great only because the musicians are still great. Lets forget about the vocal performances. Because there is no way he will ever again put on show from 1975 through to 1985 and some of later 1990's but its all about the memories now and no matter how bad he sounds it is still those shows that we remember when he was at his BEST!
really? are you kidding me listen to lost in the flood from this concert and ask yourself if he has ever attacked that song so hard he hits it i dont know if bruce has ever sang a song so raw the goosebumps run down your back im not sayin bruce is perfect but he is damn close in my eyes this concert is amazing
Im 15, and from Liverpool England. My dad is a massive Bruce Springsteen fan and thats how i got into him. Altho this was written many yrs ago, his songs are so relavent to life growing up as a teenager.
Born to Run is the greatest album ever, but this is so much better han the album version.Nt yet seen the boss live, unlike my dad but I will one day and simply cant wait.
From a 17-year-old fan, hello! My parents got me into Bruce, but it was I who finally convinced them to see him live last year, and it was MAGICAL. Here's hoping you get to see your concert soon.
im not trying to be an asshole, but i was like you at one point. loved springsteen, was dying to see him live. went to a show in 2005, and got my heart broken and my dreams crushed and trampled. if you do go, spring for front row seats or get as close as you can to the stage, otherwise, its awful. just a tip from an impartial springsteen fan. and btw, dont go and expect to see a performance ne where within miles of this show.
yeah, i dont feel like wasting my money. i went to one of his more recent shows, they suck. im happy 4 u tho, that u still get to watch him perform and enjoy it. all i feel is like i wasted my 125 dollars.
springsteen puts on a better show than just about anyone else out. but then again everyone has their own opinion. i personaly wouldn't waist my money on anyone but springsteen.
i agree he puts on dynamite shows and he is better than everyone else putting on concerts these days, but hes nowhere near as good now as he was back in the day.
I'm 19 and listen to all kinds of music, but Bruce can touch your soul in a way nobody else can. I'm glad other young people are supporting the Boss. Lots (not all) of this new music is complete shit. Way to be, guys!
@ tyroneharris, (I live in the Netherlands so sorry for my bad english) I'm 16 and was raised with Bruce Springsteen and i'm a big fan. (my father named me Bruce and my little brother is named Steve). I have been to 8 concerts now and at the Pinkpop festival he even gave me a hand during the Promised Land (i stood direct in front off the pit). Best moment in my life period. I especially love those old performances during the '75-85 period The rawness and energy is just legendary Thank you Bruce
I like Springsteen's more balanced and orchestrated interpretations of his old songs during recent years. However, there is nothing that can beat Springsteen in his early days in the 1970s. There is a pureness and raw energy, an emotional bareness, to his songs that even he has not been able to recreate ever after. Grand performance. Thanks for puting it on.
yup. amen. right on brother. (insert agreement here) i find myself in complete agreement with that assessment of bruce springsteens career. thank you for sharing my rational/ and factually correct opinion of the boss.
I do think this version of For You is incredible and better than the album or any full band live version, by far.
He plays rarely plays this or Incident on 57th Street, one of my top 5 favs, but he has played it like this, a soft rock band version, and as a rock anthem suitable for a stadium. It is magnificent regardless of the arrangement.
His problem now is that he's competing with himself. No one can compete with a young Bruce Springsteen. No one, not even a mature Bruce Springsteen.
Greatest Song ever.....its Bruces best and my fave song by anyone ever...I lvoe it...I know i might be one of the few tothink those thigns but it is so beautiful and just so powerful....i love it
Thank you Bruce for givig us something some amazing as this!
Magic. These 8 minutes shows the Man, the Poet, the master Performer, the Purity of the Talent, the Power and Passion - that truly is Bruce Springsteen.
Liebe Yvonne! Was wird bleiben?Werd immer ein Teil von dir in mir haben!"....i came for you...!" Hasi
awesome, really really awesome, cant stop listenin one of my nu fav songs eva but igtta get sum editing software to mute the pillock at the end hu shouts "blinded by the light" like a bellend. he does it on quite a few from this concert, if i met him, id kill him, surprised bruce dint tell him to shut it lol. if u ent noticed it dont look for it! it'll ruin the end of a perfect 8mins
I can't think of a better way to show some one actual genius than to play the version of "For You" on "Greeting From Asbury Park, NJ," soft rock on Mr. Springsteen's first album, released 36 years ago ago; and then show them this version played live in October, 1975, I think.
The song, great on the album, could be God, herself, speaking here. He's 25 years old. She must be very proud, seeing someone to whom she gave so much talent, actually using it. Pure genius.
Where this defies the whole history of popular music is that pop was designed as a disposable commodity. But you could listen to this every few days for decades, and it would just get better and better. I've tried it! I know!
I love Bruce, but Im only 14 and was wondering, in your honest opinion who's better, Bruce or Bob Dylan coz me and my mates are divided im for bruce and danny is for bob, what is your opinion.
dylan omost definately but you gotta give it to the boss. him and dylan are two of only a handful that we still have left that changed the face of music. where are this generations dylan and bruce?
I received the Springsteen book "For You" and I was really blown away... if any book can capture what it's like to be at a Springsteen show, this is it. The images are as good as concert photos get..
On this tour ... "For You " was the last of the encores...physically spent, and the band abandoned, he some how summoned up the emotion to rip the last remaining pieces of his heart out and leave it on the floor and walk off undaunted..........
just so's y'all know the concert was AMAZING! that man is 58 and has more energy in his baby finger than i probably do! hahah! i'm deffo gonna go see him again! and again! and again! :) x
The entire Hammersmith Odeon show, Bruce's first performance ever in Europe, is one of the DVDs in the Born to Run 25th Anniversary package. Most of the individual songs are on Youtube, but it's not the same as seeing the entire show, seamlessly, on HDTV with good sound.
This version of "For You," which he didn't play for about 25 years after this tour, is a stunner.
Bob Dylan matches and excedes it as far as lyrics go (Pete Townshend of The Who's 2) but thats ONLY in lyrics, the soul put into the actual music is matched by very few
True, I forgot to mention that Dewey Cox is the greatest songwriter alive
But in the words of Eddie Vedder:
"If Elvis and Buddy Hollie are the Cain and Able of Rock and Roll and Bruce Springsteen is Zachariah, Iggy Pop is Methusala, and of course Neil Young is the wise prophet Izekeil, then what does that make Dewey Cox? Well I don't know what God sounds like, but I'm willing to bet that when I reach the Pearly Gates, he sounds alot like Dewey Cox."
I love the recording of this song, but not until I heard this version did I consider it one of the best songs ever. I love this version much better than the original masterpiece. Talk about passion...he's got it.
in school the other day i was asked what was my favourite artist ever! i said bruce springsteen cos he's such a legend! half the class didnt know who i was on about! it was terrible! and then i had a great conversation with my teacher about him! she's met him! i'm so jelous of her now! haha! she played this song on piano for me! its was great! haha! just thought i'd share that useless piece of information! :)
Do you live in USA because I'm from finland and even here everybody know him but I am the only one who listen to his music in my class but my teacher like him to.
no i'm from ireland! i was so shocked when no one in the whole class knew him! i'm only 15 and my teacher was shocked when i told her how much i love bruce and his music! we have great fun in classes now talking bout how great he is! lol!
I'm from Perú but I live in Madrid and I have listened to Bruce all my life. A friend of mine says Bruce only cries, but I forgive him because he likes other guys like Neil Young and Nick Drake. I remember I bought Greetings from Ashbury Park in cassette!!!
i'm in the UK and most people here have heard of him, but most don't really like him much, which is a massive shame. he is SUCH a legend, only wish i'd been to this gig
jwr5592 i agree that most people here hear his name and think dancing in the dark era and that's it. they are missing out big time on the musical range and lyrical beauty the man is blessed with. however there are a good number of us die hard fans who will always be here
when ever i think of bruce, i think pre 85. i think live 75-85. everything after that pales in comparison. this is when he was the boss, this is the best music ever created, especially in 75 and 78. and im only 23 years old, and when i hear concerts from nowadays then i hear this, i see no comparison.
I've seen multiple shows on every tour, beginning in 1978, with the Darkness tour. I've left almost every show, in 1978, and on May 2, 2009, a month ago thinking the same thing: "I've just seen the greatest rock & roll that has ever been or ever will be."
His earlier shows were longer, he played more slow songs and told more stories. His current shows aren't inferior, they are just different; more intense, song, song, song, song - no breaks. And he has 300 songs to chose from instead of 30.
One of the great performances by one of the great live acts EVER. If you do not own this album, don't tell anyone......and go buy it. The video is dark, but the performance is ridiculous - end of the show, all by himself....stud.

he was a good singer then, ill agree hes terrible now. but this concert is the mecca of all concerts. best show ne band has ever put on. every song is a work of art- a masterpiece of rythm and soul. with nothing but the essence of everything good and right sang into it by bruce and played into it by the e street band. and this song is 5 million times better than the album version or any other version for that matter. i wish i could have been there. id give ne thing to go.
oipbhakeld 2 years ago
You will make allot of enemies with that statement!
I thought this concert was terrible in his vocal performance accept for this song.
But he took vocal lessons and by 1980 he was boosting his vocal performance! 1978 he was allot better vocally. I don not agree with you.
Now just like everybody else that is pushing up in age. He struggles some nights, but other nights its great! But the point is, its not about his vocals that have to be perfect! Its in the energy of the music and lyrics!
sumbodysumwhersumday 2 years ago
i completely agree, and he put a lot more energy into these songs from this show than anything recently. dont get me wrong, im not talkin shit about bruce, im just saying that people who say hes awesome now and better now than he was are completely full of shit and are in denial. how could a near 60 year old man put as good a show on as a 25 year old?
oipbhakeld 2 years ago
I agree with you. I love him now. But, when we were all youngsters growing up on the Jersey shore, he was brilliant. He's still brilliant. He was just more brilliant then. Most of us slow down when we're older. He's no exception. He still blows the doors off though.
DGwapa 2 years ago 5
Good point and I do agree with you.

Greetings to all Springsteen fans from the UK
cunnersovmerseyside 2 years ago 10
From a 17-year-old fan, hello! My parents got me into Bruce, but it was I who finally convinced them to see him live last year, and it was MAGICAL. Here's hoping you get to see your concert soon.
Also, I love videos where Bruce plays the piano!

im not trying to be an asshole, but i was like you at one point. loved springsteen, was dying to see him live. went to a show in 2005, and got my heart broken and my dreams crushed and trampled. if you do go, spring for front row seats or get as close as you can to the stage, otherwise, its awful. just a tip from an impartial springsteen fan. and btw, dont go and expect to see a performance ne where within miles of this show.
oipbhakeld 2 years ago
you're crazy.. do you know what he's doing now?!.. go to a 2009 show for the working on a dream tour.. your balls will drop

yeah, i dont feel like wasting my money. i went to one of his more recent shows, they suck. im happy 4 u tho, that u still get to watch him perform and enjoy it. all i feel is like i wasted my 125 dollars.

ahh.. well im sorry u feel that way

springsteen puts on a better show than just about anyone else out. but then again everyone has their own opinion. i personaly wouldn't waist my money on anyone but springsteen.
minimerpmert 2 years ago 4
i agree he puts on dynamite shows and he is better than everyone else putting on concerts these days, but hes nowhere near as good now as he was back in the day.
oipbhakeld 2 years ago
I disagree.
Tom Wolfe's (the first one) point in "You Can Never Go Home Again," is not that home has changed, but that we have changed.
His Dream & Magic shows - I saw five of each - were as intense as anything I've ever seen my anyone, including Bruce Springsteen.
Were they 1978 Darkness shows? No, but they were not inferior, either. He still plays every show like it will be his last.
I'm different. He can never do to me again what he did in 1978. I can't still high jump 6 feet either.

10x the song the album version is. Very moving.
LandoKM 2 years ago
He can do the same thing with Incident on 57th Street - a slow version that will make you cry.
He can also play Incident as a rock anthem, and both versions are stunning.
That's one of many reasons he's Bruce Springsteen, and the rest of the world is not.
CPSJSMSUUMUGA 2 years ago 4
I like Springsteen's more balanced and orchestrated interpretations of his old songs during recent years. However, there is nothing that can beat Springsteen in his early days in the 1970s. There is a pureness and raw energy, an emotional bareness, to his songs that even he has not been able to recreate ever after. Grand performance. Thanks for puting it on.
Grabowsky75 2 years ago 4
yup. amen. right on brother. (insert agreement here) i find myself in complete agreement with that assessment of bruce springsteens career. thank you for sharing my rational/ and factually correct opinion of the boss.
oipbhakeld 2 years ago
I do think this version of For You is incredible and better than the album or any full band live version, by far.
He plays rarely plays this or Incident on 57th Street, one of my top 5 favs, but he has played it like this, a soft rock band version, and as a rock anthem suitable for a stadium. It is magnificent regardless of the arrangement.
His problem now is that he's competing with himself. No one can compete with a young Bruce Springsteen. No one, not even a mature Bruce Springsteen.

I know!

I've never liked Dylan much, in fact I think he's incredibly overrated, whereas Springsteen is timeless and his first five albums are all perfect.

That sayes it all lol

when ever i think of bruce, i think pre 85. i think live 75-85. everything after that pales in comparison. this is when he was the boss, this is the best music ever created, especially in 75 and 78. and im only 23 years old, and when i hear concerts from nowadays then i hear this, i see no comparison.
