I keep seeing a reference to the diff lock button in my '02 4Runner. Where the heck is it? I have the front drive shift lever with L4-N-H and the 4WD button on it. But where is the button?
im kinda new with diff-locks, how are they engaged? is this diff lock in you video something like the ARB air airlockers that you switch or toggle something to lock it?
You really don't need a rear diff lock.....If you pull the emergency brake on most 4x4's it will put enough tension on the back wheels so that both of them will spin. If you don't beleive me just try it for yourself. It's helped me to get out of a few bad situations!
Badass rig! I had the same one for a few years. Had comfort on road and was great offroad. I sold it for my 08 Jeep. Not gonna lie the Yota was awesome in so many ways. But love taking my roof and doors off the Jeep. The yota did shock the hell out of a lot of ppl thou. Loved the rear diff lock.
soooo much arguing about jeep vs. toyota. who the fuck cares and enjoy the sport!!
i've owned a 99' 4runner (no diff lock), 99' tacoma (with diff lock), and an 03' jeep (selec-trac, which locks the driveshafts). all are fun! not gonna lie though, the straight axle has its advantages here and there..
@ChristianJames6759 "already in em bottom bitch" Ok... that makes a lot of sense.
Second, I didn't asked if they have lockers or not. 4Runners back from 95 have lockers in them, and far better than Aussie Lockers. I asked for a jeep off-roading with a stock suspesion. I guess you didn't found one either....
@ChristianJames6759 Yes, 4Runners also come with sway bars disconnects. Actually, they autimatically disconect with the Terrain Selector. But thats NOT what I'm talking about. You said, in a very "jeep pwns toyota" kind of way that you could find a jeep that with the stock suspension would drive through a 2-inch ditch.
Well, first, I think you need glasses, cause that's definetly not a 2-inch ditch. Second, the point of the video was to get stuck and show how a locker works.
@ChristianJames6759 Third, going over to a video and start bashing toyotas isn't really a very sporty nor smart thing to do. If you wheel (and I know you have), you can easily say that the best rides arent bought, but built. No matter the brand, you cant take it out from the dealer to a trail and expect to be the best. Toyotas, Jeep, old Troopers, Dodge and Ford Pickups, all work just as well with the proper equipment. Its a matter of personal selection and, yes, maybe a difference in realibilty
@godzillaisnuclea123 Its not always about articulation. In some scenarios all four wheels can be on the ground. But if one has less traction than the others, it is more likely to spin. The locker helps in this situation too. ALL serious off road vehicles have a locking system.
My rear diff lock actuator is constantly getting rusted, full of moisture and not working.
I never go in deep water,it just gets hot from being attached to the rear diff and ends up getting corroded inside where the motor is from condensation.
I've taken it off, cleaned it twice in the last 3 years, got it working and now the fucker is broken again.
IF it has the little rear lock button on the dash to the left of the steering wheel, you put the transfer in low4,then push the button, the red "diff lock" light will blink, then if it's working it will stay on.
If it keeps blinking,it isn't working(the actuator on the rear diff is not very tough and gets rusty and full of moisture.)
@dgl1962 is the diff lock mainly for off-roading? I am hoping to get a 4runner in the next few weeks just for street driving and was just wondering how important is the diff lock. I would appreciate any info. Also, I was told to get a 96 or newer model because of head gasket problems with the older models. Any info on that? Thanks
The video shows here; a 3rd gen with a rear e-locker. When he locks the rear it makes both rear tires gain full power. this is necessary when you are off camber as shown. Without a rear e locker, the power is transferred to the tires that are slipping. Even better would be having a front locker as well. However you really need a solid front axle. Unless you like blowing out axle shafts! having this rear e-locker is basically giving you 50% more traction....a must have that I use often!!
The vid is about the rear diff locker, there's an actuator motor on the rear diff that you engage by pushing a little button on the dash(you have to be in 4wd low).
@az4runner4fun is the diff lock mainly for off-roading? I am hoping to get a 4runner in the next few weeks just for street driving and was just wondering how important is the diff lock. @DeMitch your not supposed to use the diff lock above 20mph. im pretty sure thats the rating. its for in sticky situations were you have lost traction. diff lock is used mainly off road. or unless your stuck in snow or something along those lines.
my 02 doesnt have that even though its the same gen 4runner. pisses me off. stupid trac control shit. i think im gunna have to go w a after market set up. any suggestions?
Hey dude, you're lucky. If you want very good traction and have traction control, put Torsens or Detroit Truetracs in your axles. You'll have a VERY streetable traction system and the same Hummer H1 uses.
Work with what cha got. It's not as bad as you think.
AND you can put a E-Locker in your 4Runner. It will fit with minor mods. And if you get the E locker ECU & switch you can hook it up and make it look factory. Get on some Toyota sites and search around. Go to IH8Mud or Yotatech dot kom
Okay, imagine a simple four wheel drive. No differental lock or any gizmos.
You drive it into a sand drift, or ditch. Now a front tire doesn't have any traction. Since it doesn't have any resistance or friction, it's the easiest tire to spin. Most of the engine's power goes to that tire, the one that has the least traction.
Have a differental lock, it sort of locks up that tire to go at the same speed as the other tire, the one next to it, on the axle. Power is provided more effiecently >>>
since, that other tire has more traction, and can use the engine's power to get out of the ditch. Hope's that clear enough, it's a somewhat complex mechanism.
At 180K my rear axle bearings started growling, changed those
If your diff lock ever stops functioning, take the actuator of the diff and open the motor case, you'll see some moisture and sand, once you clean the contacts it should work fine.
Same goes for the transfer case actuator,if it stops it's just some crap in the motor/electric section(it's alot easier to remove from the transfer than the diff).
damn, that many ,miles and all you had to do was timing belts and axle bearings? im glad i bought mine hearing that. is it a auto? i was wondering how strong the tranny is
When you buy a '4 wheel drive' vehicle at the dealership you are technically being lied to-you don't have true 4wd. Power will only go to one tire up front and one in the back, however, a differential locker (or welded diff spiders) transfers power to both wheels on that axle.
That's not true. The power is distributed to both tires evenly when they have equal traction. As soon as traction is lost or lessened on one tire, most of the power will go to that tire as it is easier to spin. Look at a diagram of how an open differential operates.
i'll explain this to you, unless someone already has, but first, just, with no offense, do you know how a differential works? pm me or something if you wanna talk about it
Nice demo, should help people who don't know wtf a locker is. I told my father in law my Taco had a rear locker, and he thought it was a place to put stuff.
@yotamanwv the locker just help send the power to the wheels that have traction. When a wheel is spining freely off the ground, its called a open diff. When you have a Limited slip differential, this does not ocurr. The locker diff means that the 2 wheels spin the same at the same time. That means you are out!

luketoy1981 2 years ago
Yep,It's an automatic and I change the fluid every 30K-along with the filter that Toyo says you don't have to do.
I drive all highway(26K per year),I change the oil every 2,000 miles(Castrol 10W30 since I live in so.FL) and the oil filter every 6,000.
The filter doesn't get that dirty if the oil is changed that often
I change the diff gear oil every 30K and grease the Ujoints every 15K.
At every timing belt change,I throw out the water pump and place a new one on.
Never let it get hot!
dgl1962 2 years ago 3
What you couldn't see is the opposite rear wheel in the ditch spinning as well. In 4WD terms, this is referred to as being 'crossed up'.
