this video is amazing anybody who help out people like you truly desevre credit for what they and you sound so honest so i for on belive every word said and + you help me understand =)
ok..so basically u set up the equation..then u have to GUESS the answer??? u just plug in exponent values hoping it equals whatever is on the right side???? thats some bullshit i hate this..can someone explain to me why we have to guess???
You don't have to just plug in exponent values using guess-and-check if you use the change-of-base formula. However, most math teachers are going to say that if you understand logarithms and exponents then there are some values that you SHOULD be able to just guess.
ok so this time i watched the video all the way through, i understand the change of base formula, but i never applied it..i guess this is an event where i can apply it instead of the guess and check method..thanks, and hott voice too
awesome! your style of teaching is easy to understand. please post more math videos (algebra2,trig,geo,pre-calc) if you have the time. much appreciated and thank you for the logarithm video.
I'm using Hitachi Starboard software for my on-screen whiteboard, Camtasia Studio to create the screen recording, and Virtual TI for the on-screen calculator.
hey thanks man im in 9th grade now and i cant understand abt that changing logunder3 then up 2 like 7log_^ these type of stuff thanks for doing it bro really appreciate it
thank you so much. my understanding of logarithms, being in 10th grade, has been shaky-(especially since i'm homeschooled and have no teacher..) thank you SO MUCH for posting this video; God bless you! -amber rose
Mrs. Oflynn, is superb. How you teach this concept makes everything easier to understand. Nice software by the way. I will hope that you will continue with your great videos. This benefits all who are eager to learn and strive to understand math concepts. 2 thumbs up. : )
I appreciate the compliment, but it doesn't mean that your teacher is an idiot. It merely means that I've been teaching this topic for 10 years now. Trust me, I wasn't this clear when I began. :)
I agree with carlitos. My teacher is an idiot, too. And my teacher has been teaching since the dinosaurs were alive I'm sure. But, she still has the teaching capability of cavemen! I really REALLY appreciate this video. It's amazing how can I get logarithms in a span of 10 minutes. When, with my teacher, weeks would go by and I still didn't understand what logs were! Thank you.
Your tutorial cleared up some questions I had, however, I really need more help in 'getting it'. For example, "dB= 20log10(240/120) (The 240 and 120 are voltages) The answer is: 6.02 dB. I can figure this out on a scientific calculator, but have NO IDEA the reason for the problem itself--does this make ANY sense? The problem is dealing with cable television calculations.
I'll continue to look at future postings to your site for answers! Thanks, addictedtoradios

Aren't ln and e inverses of each other? they just cancel out and the exponent would still be the answer. seems like an easier way to do those.
really good video though :)

It's possible to estimate a logarithm in base 10, without a calculator.
log 2 is approximately equal to .301.
log 20 = log (10 * 2).
log (10 * 2) = log 10 + log 2.
log 10 + log 2 = 1 + .301 = 1.301.
For bigger logariths, say, log 118, set it up to something like
log 100 < log 118 < log 128 (128 is 2^7).
2 < log 118 < 7 log 2 (log 2^7 = 7 log 2)
2 < log 118 < 2.107
so log 118 is between 2 and 2.107 (if you put it into a calculator it's 2.07)

change of base formula
lets say
y=log(2)8
change of base would be 8=2^y
right?
if tru, then what happens when u have a bigger number? how are u suppose to even know what number to start guessing with?

What about the algebraic expression for natural logarithm base.
vkgoku2012 3 years ago
What would you like to know?
oflynnp1 3 years ago
I would like to know how to solve this sort of problem lnx+ln(x+1)=ln2
vkgoku2012 3 years ago
Condense the left side:
ln[x(x+1)]=ln(2)
and distribute:
ln(x^2+x)=ln(2)
Then exponentiate both sides:
x^2+x=2
Then set the right side = 0 and use quadratic formula!

i have a question :B
how would you solve Log 0.1?
sarahgoesrawrx 3 years ago
If no base is indicated then we assume that we are looking for log base 10 of 0.1. Since 0.1 = 1/10, the question to ask yourself is
"10 (the base) to what power would give an answer of 1/10?"
Since 10^-1 = 1/10, log base 10 of 0.1 = -1.
Hope that helps!

what's the name of the program you used?
