Sometimes a cover is made and you think: Why the hell did they bother (Lenny
Kravitz's American Woman comes to mind), sometimes it's pretty much equal (Diturbed's Land of confusion would be a good example and Metallica's Turn the Page is another), but occasionally someone brings something new to the party like this one (although it''s not as musically complex as the original, it does have a certain energy all its own).
Nothing will top Jim Morrison's version, however, I feel that Idol's version is more emblematic of the modern day LA than its predecessor. There's something about the tone which matches the LA I've seen.
What Morrison captured was an atmosphere lost to time. That's an LA of a different era. I wish I were around to have seen it but it lives through the Doors music.
Billy was almost killed in a bike crash months before this video. That's why he has a cane in this video. Thank God you're still with us. LOVE YOU BILLY...
Seriously GREAT song here! Out in LA,I played the Doors version of this song as I cruised all the fun spots..Redondo Beach, Santa Monica,Sunset,Wilshire Blvd, Sepulveda Blvd-Hot dayum what fun I had! should of stayed in LA.......oh well, I can GO BACK! Rock on-everyone!
sacrilegious perhaps to the true Doors fans, but this cover by Billy is so steamy, listening to this song in my car makes me put the pedal to the metal.... great video by David Fincher
I never noticed it before, but listen closely to his voice- you can really hear the cocaine/alcohol abuse. The full bodied tonality from his earlier days has been widdled down to a raspy, light growl where he obviously is leaning on his nodes to get it all across. Wow. I'm not saying it's bad because of this, it's just remarkable when you notice these things.
i hope di5c0rd1a was joking when he said val kilmer was apart of the doors or maybe he's just talkin about the movie val kilmer singed all the songs in the movie even though the movie left alot of stuff out an im sorry billys version just dont cut it i like days of the new's better
remember when the fence broke and all the hens got out. they went to the pool and swam for what appeared to be eternity, then, they got mad, and that was the end of all time fun for living loose as a goose unafraid of the noose society puts around freedom.
When I first saw Idol back in the 80s I said " now there's a modern day Jim Morrison. Funny it turned out he was in the Movie The Doors and also did this song. Nice job on LA BILLY
I think Jim is looking down and thinking, he got the point of my song. When Billy meets Jim I think they will bless us with this as a duet, now thats gonna liven up heaven and God is going to be rocking out over this.
I grew up listening to The Doors cuz they were my Dad's fav band. When I heard this in 1990, I was blown away at how good it was. Pops almost threw me out when I suggested it MIGHT be as good as the original. lol Best Door's cover EVER.
Sithyness, tell dad that this hard core doors fan thinks Billy gave Jim his due respect with this song, at least he did make it in to some rave bullshit, or worst yet disco crap. Jims happy with it.
@Bodomterror696969 FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU! You little piece of piece of shit, you fucking slut mother had you on the toilet...fucking cunt.
this is the best cover compared to other who have attempted! the song at least rocks and of course no one can replace jim! at least its not an american idol attempting to cover this classic tune and ruin it!!
Here we go...everyone on the sidelines jumping out of their seats to be The Critic. Forget that shit. The song was a respectable tribute to JM...enuff said--Billy, ya did a nice job...but you don't need me or anyone else to tell you that.

Yeah - it's tough to cover a singer that is suffering from an acid-induced, hallucinatory vision.
"Riders On The Storm" is about the only thing that comes to mind that Morrison ever did that need never be attempted to cover.
Idol & Stevens shred this particular cover... without the use of hallucinogens too! =)
