@indaz 1. It IS the Crickets NOT the Bobby Fuller Four. 'the four say 'six gun' and the Crickets say 'zip gun'. Earl Sinks had a great voice and did a great job on Peggy Sue Got Married. The whole 'In Style With The Crickets' was a great album and the CD had the bonus record of "Don't Cha Know' Glad the Crickets made the Hall - Hope they mention Niki Sullivan as one of the originals.
The singer and rhythm guitar were Earl Sinks (also known as Earl Richards). He played sessions with the Crickets and Buddy and for a while after Buddy died was the singer and rhythm player for the Crickets.
Holy cow! Robbin people with a......ZIP GUN !!! I know everybody including me thought it was a six gun. What a revelation. If you did not know, a zip gun is a crude, home-made gun that fires one bullet. Sonny Curtis also wrote many other great songs.
@haulofrecords if your on about the clash, joe strummer does say 'six gun' he changed the lyrics slightly..also changed something else near the start 'i needed money cos i had none'.
Bobby Fuller had the greatest love and admiration for Buddy Holly and I knew about his version of "Love's Made a Fool Of You" but I never had any idea till now that the Crickets did the original on this song. You see, you're never too old to learn. I'm almost 62, been listening to rock & roll since 1957 and never knew about this. Wow!
@teor993 The Bobby Fuller Four had the biggest hit with it in the mid 60's. The Clash heard it on a juke box in a pub and it was that version they covered.
@teor993 Aside from you, who says the Clash version is "more famous"? I like the Clash version the best, but there is no question that the Bobby Fuller Four version is the most well known and that they had the biggest hit with it. Maybe if you tried not to be such a self-centered narcissist you’d be open to learning a bit about the history of popular music.
@robertemmet321 shut the fuck just because i think the clash version is more famous that somehow makes me a self-centred narcissist i have a wide musical knowledge and i take music for gcse so don't judge people just because some stupid youtube comment
wow, didnt know this, it was always bobby fuller to me, just found out the other day that the the guy who recorded ' ca plan pour moi " was ripped off by the record company, because they wanted a young looking guy for the clip, andt the substitute traded off it for 30 years, hilarious, chek it out
I love this version even better than the Bobby Fuller version. This is the first time I've heard this and Im in love. I knew something was missing from the other variations of this. But this one has it all!
@hunkabuggy Sonny Curtis, of the Crickets, wrote this song. He also wrote the theme song for the Mary Tyler Moore Show. As well as my favorite Buddy Holly song "Rock Around With Ollie Vee"
@hunkabuggy That makes two of us. I'm a huge Buddy Holly fan, but I'm sorry- the Bobby Fuller version kicks this into the middle of next bloody Christmas, in comparison!
@CockneyRebel1979 Yep really does. Has a great vid to go with it. Your name rings a bell for some reason. 'Makes me smile'! Are you a relative of Steve Harley? One of my all time fav's too.
Thanks for this version. I always knew Sonny Curtis wrote it but never heard it in it's original form. I'm gonna have to go out and get it now. Thanks again.
so finally i got the original version ! i like it, buddy holly style quite a bit, well, after all the crickets were his group as you say in the video.thx for posting.
Bobby Fuller 4 absolutely owns this. His version is what it would have sounded like if Buddy Holly had lived into the 60s and done it with the Crickets.
@myraredoowop Can't believe it, thank you very much! I am sure it will change my life (like Get Up Offa That Thing by JB did). Very enjoying and moving as the rhythm ♫ Thank you again!
@tubein73 Got to agree... This song is brilliant. It's such an evocative track from a time when everything was innocent, and no covers can relay that feeling, despite how good they are.
I knew that Sonny Curtis wrote this one, but I never realized the Crickets actually recorded it before Bobby Fuller, who really high octaned it. Just heard an awesome version by the Stray Cats, and will now have a listen to the Clash version (never heard that one, though I knew of it, belive it or not).
@oversoul99 PROBABLY because you don't like punk rock right? i personally think it's the best cover IN MY OPINION, I also enjoy listening to this version too, but I do respect your opinion
This is the Crickets' original recording (May 18, 1959) of the Sonny Curtis composition, which was covered by The Bobby Fuller Four, who made it a classic by going to #9 on the Billboard Top 100 for two weeks on March 12, 1966. R.I.P. Buddy and Bobby.
Green Day I guess is honoring the Clash by covering their cover. Neither is like the original. It's a whole different format. Some think the best part of a cover is putting a whole new spin on the song. I think the one thing they changed is what makes the song what it is. I stand by initial statement.
Nothing against your favorite groups at all. We're talking about one song they didn't even write. Forget the musicology talk. Just notice how the original versions have the guitar riff after each and every verse. The newer covers don't. They go right into 'I needed money but I had none...'. This is the difference. They took out the riff, which was the unique part of the song. Instead they use their rendition of the riff as an intro.
The Clash and Green Day versions are weak. The best part of the original and Bobby Fuller version is the odd number of bars (19) that constitue the word and guitar parts of the verse. This is the main hook of the song and what makes it unique. Kind of like the House of the Rising Sun being 22 instead of being 16 or 24. Clash and Green Day's have a boring 12 for each verse.
@SlashManEXE And then The Clash palyed the HELL out of it giving that song exactly the kick in the ass it needed to be a true dirty shot glass full of whiskey Rock-N-Roll!!!!
@avgnman72 tv shows didnt ruin them the artists did + infact i think every cover ive heard of this song is good in there own way so dont blame brilliant-ly funny shows for adding a song that these artists payed to have the rights to cover, what are you 10 years old?
This is so cool! I was only familiar with the Bobby Fuller Four version...until now! I find it fascinating that the Bobby Fuller version was a cover and that this is the original. How cool!
@Madferit71 If this was done in 1959, written by Sonny Curtis(of The Crickets), and Bobby Fuller released it in 1966, how was Bobby Fuller's version the original? SONNY CURTIS. I was a senior in Slaton (TX) High School with Sonny. He played guitar and sang and I played upright bass in Mr. Gilbert's (SHS Principal) "Hillbilly Band". Sonny eventually became - and still is - the lead singer of the Crickets after Buddy Holly died. Before that, Sonny had the backup band for Tennesee Ernie Ford on the TEF TV show.
The Ernie Ford thing is not listed in Sonny's bio, but I used watch the shown just so I could see & hear Sonny play and sing. Sonny also wrote"Love Is All Around", the theme song for Mary Tyler show. He wrote Walk Right Back - Everly Bro hit. I think the biggest hit Sonny wrote was I Fought the Law
