@kerozenimus I have not tried that one yet. I have tried the Aquamira Frontier pro. Although it does not remove viruses it is a pretty good filter in my opinion.
How much iodine is actually in the drops? I mean I know Iodine can poison you at certain levels so would that be a solid idea for a week long trek or just a once in a while thing?
Please anyone i need your help i am a human that likes water and i need it to be perfectly clean water only and perhaps know how to mineralize it most importantly no chemicals and just the water help me and i shall reward you thanks you
I love that MSR I think its great, I never use iodine or anything else. Thats why I get paid on my job so I can go out and spend the money to buy things like spare filters, etc. nice video.
Great vids thank you I have a question though.. I'm told by ex-British army guys using a millbank bag (or i guess any suitable filter material) and boiling would do the job in the abscence of water purification tablets etc. Would you agree or consider that a risk..?
if ur stranded u wont have any of that tablet stuff so you shoulkd boil it but great vid you should show all of the part where u dump the water in the bandanna cause how do we know that u didnt go in ur house or truck and fill it wth clean water
If this is the unit I think it is, the filter cartridge is ceramic. It is reuseable and can be cleaned off using a green scratch pad on the outside of the cartridge.
It will freeze but it has to get extremely cold to do it. I have never seen it freeze myself. I have spoken to people that have and they said it gets kind of slushy. Alcohol will actually freeze at -180 degrees. II being an iodine tincture it has alcohol in it. So it would only get slushy I believe. Good question though. I would hate to be out in that kind of cold lol.
Instead of using aquarium tubing, you can also use the surgical tube used for slingshots. Just cut off a piece and stick it on the end like the tubing you currently have.
Great video on treatment.. and nice variety of methods shown. How long did you leave the Iodine treated water sit before usage? I have heard that 20 minutes is sufficient. Is that your experience as well?
when purifying water with a chlorine based tablet you actually want that chlorine tatse. When sodium hypochlorite comes into contact with bacteria it actually loses its smell as its actually consumed by the bacteria. When you have a faint chlorine smell that means you have some left over and the water is safe to drink,,,,,,
I actually bought this on from Cody Lundin when I took his class a while back. Probably around 6 or 7 years ago now. I love the Mora knife I have yet to find a better knife than that.
Great vid, I too use iodine or boiling to purify! Keeps your kit lighter!!, Is that a mora knife from Dave Canterberry's website? If so how do you like it? I am looking for a smaller knife so I don't use my Ka-Bar too much!
I have a Mora and I love it!! The only flaw to a Mora is their handles. Ever noticed how in most "bushcraft" videos they have Mora's with wooden handles? I definately reccomend making sure you get a full tang blade... check out my vids on the Mora & plz comment thanks
well I have the Mora 640 (viking) and the tang was only half with a plastic handle. do some batonning and you'll get the same results I did. even the clippers will break eventually....
I'm not saying they're invincible JohnBoy, hell I've busted their army issue blades. But for a twenty dollar knife, do you expect the impossible? I've broken every knife you can possibly name, including the ones legends say cannot break (Nepalese made Kukris for example). They're fantastic blades, and if you're so worried about them breaking, buy a couple (it'll still be cheaper than the big name knives like Cold Steel or Ka-bar). Hell, for under a hundred bucks you can get that Ka-bar and mora!
hey thanks man. i have a mora 510 and a good friend just sent me the 711. (I really like the 711) my only complaint with the 510 was the handle being so cheaply made but what do you expcet at only $7.99?? The blades are excellent though. they hold a good edge and are nearly impossible to break. I made a new handle for my 510 out of some cedar and it looks great and i feel more confident in using it. check out my videos. thanks
or u can just boil water

Good vid. The Chlor Floc demo, how long should the water sit (before you can drink the water) after one tablet is put in? Thanks for sharing.

filtering then boil but iodine itself will not kill every bug

i don't know if that filter has a prefilter on the hose, but you can rubberband a bandana on the end of the hose to keep all the big crap out.

Have to admit I got a little lost with the iodine, if you boil the water, isn't that enough? Isn't the iodine to be used instead of boiling?
johnmonk66 1 year ago
yeah so why didn't you dig a hole in the ground again and then purify it, man your videos are so fake.

@MetaReaLizard In my opinion nothing beats boiling. Big bubbles mean no trouble. Just bring it to a boil and your good to go.

id be more worried about high levels of chemicals rather than bacteria

Nice video Desert-Dude.
You covered all the basics with understandable competence.
Coffee filter on the end of the pump filter float tube ain't a bad inclusion either.
Kudos' !

put a coffee filter over the msr's suction end to keep out impurities that would shorten filter life

The handles are fine, if they're the wooden handles or the "Clippers", avoid the army issue ones. The only real problem with em is their sheathes.
