The rest are "in reserve", which means they are not fully functional. Besides, their most advanced sub is the Akula. The Akulas may be quiet, but they have inferior weapons, sonar and sensors. Any US LA-class boat could beat an Akula and we have 44. We have the newer Seawolf and Virginia class submarines that are better than any present or future Russian sub.
They have at least 50 operational subs. US subs during Cold War were at least 20 years behind Soviet subs, and the Russians have kept up the lead. Virginia is an old and outdated class. The Akula is an incredible innovation, it is quiet, the sub is largely automated allowing for half the typical crew, better electronics, weapons (Nothing even come close to Shkval and Klub, dumbshit), and the US just has nothing to counter it. They are still making them, and will until about 2020. No submarine in the world can come close to the virginia.

Tactics will probably make the difference.

I depends. if the submarine is very slow and quiet then it will be very hard to track it but if it is very noisey then its very easy. That is when using passive sornar.
For active sornar can detect anything within its range but other vessels can track the active sornar signals 3 times the distance away. Hope this helps.
Ok, so Whiskey class and Foxtrot class submarines are easy to detect because they make a lot of noise. So that's why Kilo class submarines are hard to detect because they use diesel-electric engines that make almost no sound.
almost every russian modern submarine has anechoic coating, and it makes difficult, but possible, an active sonar detection. In the 80s, the soviets partially developed (and i don´t know if they still use) magnetohydrodynamic propulsion, wich makes a passive sonar detection almost impossible

The maximum depth 2 which a sub can submerge is also very important. & in this area, the Russian subs beat the Americans subs. Being able 2 dive 2 deeper depths makes them harder 2 attack. The American subs r superior in sonars & integrated electronic suites in general. So it's difficult 2 tell who's subs will be better in a war situation. Each has its strengths & weaknesses. Tactics will probably make the difference.

The US's subs have more advanced sonars, more advanced computerized battle management systems & they r quieter. As 4 surface vessels, the only vessel that is superior 2 the USN vessels is yr Kirov battlecruiser. The other cruisers & destroyers r inferior 2 the Ticonderoga cruisers & the Arleigh Burke destroyers.

The Chinese also surprised them in an exercise when one of their air independent propulsion subs popped up in the middle of a carrier group. The Americans were amazed. But they are taking this threat more serious now. I don't think they would want 2 see 1 of their 5 billion dollars carriers sunk by a much cheaper submarine.

I don't know about Oscar class, but Akula is definitely very silent. In the West, the quieter nuclear submarine is probably the Virginia. The most quietest submarines of all are the U212s & soon, the Russian Lada will follow. But right now, u have the most silent submarines that are out there. Maybe that's why the Russians wanted 2 buy U212 from u. 2 see how they can improve the Lada class. But right now, the most advanced non-nuclear sub in the world is the U212. We'll see how Lada will be.

Can Russian submarines be detected by sonar? Most frigates have sonar so it would be easy to spot them

I depends. if the submarine is very slow and quiet then it will be very hard to track it but if it is very noisey then its very easy. That is when using passive sornar.
For active sornar can detect anything within its range but other vessels can track the active sornar signals 3 times the distance away. Hope this helps.

Ok, so Whiskey class and Foxtrot class submarines are easy to detect because they make a lot of noise. So that's why Kilo class submarines are hard to detect because they use diesel-electric engines that make almost no sound.

almost every russian modern submarine has anechoic coating, and it makes difficult, but possible, an active sonar detection. In the 80s, the soviets partially developed (and i don´t know if they still use) magnetohydrodynamic propulsion, wich makes a passive sonar detection almost impossible
