Japan 'disappointed' over whaling threat

AUSTRALIA'S threat to take Japan to the international court over whaling is disappointing but should not affect relations between the two countries, Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada said after talks with Foreign Minister Stephen Smith in Perth.

Mr Okada said it was Japan's view the issue of whaling should be discussed thoroughly with the International Whaling Commission (IWC).

"The point I would make, it's very unfortunate the Australian side has indicated it will take action in an international court," Mr Okada told reporters on Sunday.

"Should action become a reality Japan will seek to represent its case with the IWC that its activities are legal."
