nice, you use symmetry right? i first tried to make plane--edit poly--symetry when i try to adjust it it doesnt work. so when i rotate the plane to face another direction and now the symmetry works. so my question is, does symmetry works depend on where the objest is facing?
Ok first off, this is not a tutorial, but a show-off piece.
I don't know if it's meant to be a tutorial, but if so it's pisspoor one because it's all in fast-forward and we're aren't told or show what tools and modifiers that are used - along with a whole list if other stuff that we should know.
hi im inexperienced in 3ds max but know my way around it, i was wondering what tool/modifier u r using to get that symmetry while working on one side? thnx for ur time .
Love the dead silence shortly after your intro that left out the key to how you started,.. Much appreciated. I guessed Plane modeling, then added modifier edit poly, but that didn't work,. so thanks,..For nothing
Thanks, but before you start doing half her face, take the time to explain what your doing and leave out your introduction,. Did you say Plane modeling? WTF,..(Move on mike)
@mrv225@mrv225 It's more of a personal preference for the character animator, but generally this is one of the few programs used. I still don't understand how you fill in those empty spaces in between the edge loop planes. The only way I can do it is with create or extrude and then connecting them. Can you help?
I Know What you made but if you cut the video and made it slower and the resolution is very low if you made it higher its will be the best tutorial for the body in 3ds max
I'm new with 3Ds MAX. And I didn't get anything from this "tutorial"... it doesn't tought me anything! Because this is not a tutorial! This video just shows the skills of the guy who made it!
Hey! This is not a tutorial!!! You just show us the way, you make face! But, you do not teach us, how to do it!!! But thank you for your help, anyway...
@3RUNG Umm... showing you how to do it... is sortof an tutorial?, And he explains it into detail pretty much perfectly, And he shows you also how to go around places making them look good, which is rare in an tutorial
do you find it better when rigging to model the mouth closed? I've always been taught to model it open, but whenever I trying working with a jow bone I find that the jaw needs to be pulled out more and more... Watching you model this face really gives me the idea to start modeling closed mouths, It would just be easier to open it later. And there would probably be less problem areas to fix as well... Great video!
Wow nice method of modeling. THIS is the way I wanna learn how to model. The box method is just confusing me to no end. Its fine for doing bodies and such but for faces its just annoying. Expecially if you are a noob and are trying to learn this stuff from random youtube videos and written online tutorials. And btw that is one cute asian you are modeling. Who is the model?
honestly man , id say learn box first this method id say is actually alot more advanced and harder , this guy makes it look easy start with low poly box modelling for characters first
wow you work fast, i created a character myself, though she is not so much detailed as yours, my is more manga type. it took me a long time just to finish up the face. i really agree with you that this method of modeling is the best to create really nice models.
i enjoyed this video much. thanks for sharing, my friend xD
If I import a jpeg or a personal pic I took representing a female, it can be modeled first and then animated in 3d max? Is 3d max capable to create a realistic model and close as possible to the female pictured in the jpeg or the pic, please?
drumboarder1, thank you for your kind reply. I understand I cannot just import any jpeg image in 3d Max and extrude it and create an animation out of it, ha?
can u make video game skins and models using 3D Studio Max like lets say i wanted to make a new Skin for a character for the upcoming Aliens vs Predator video game
@naholdup There is no advanced charcter modeling for noobs, start up easy, I became a professional after 2 -3 years, That's how long it takes to start making these tutorials professionally...
Just below the modifier list there's a white test tube and if u hover over it it should say "Show end result on/off toggle" click it and now when you work in editable poly mode it'll give you a live visible update of the other side of your model :) bare in mind the orange outlining is the side of the symmetry that you work on.
something that I keep seeing almost everyone missing, and I'll tell you because I know you'll get what I'm saying:
at the corners of the mouth, a lot of people forget just how drawn in the edges of the lips become! If you don't do this, when it is subsurfed etc, then the lips will look like they come to some kind of weird point as they are drawn to the corners, but in reality, it smooths out and the corners are pulled to where they face back into the mouth, rather than out
That is a pretty hard question. It all depends on the person who makes it.
For instance, you could make a human model and then just apply material to it, or detail it in Zbrush/mudbox and then get texture from Gimp/photoshop - twice the time but five times the better result.
You also must count the skill of the modeller. As a newbie, it took me 3 days to get the base model finish, but the 3d Artist probably does it in one day or less.
Can you please do a strip model tutorial? It would be extremely helpful because I've been googling for days, and I can't find anything. ; ; please help?
Do you have to know how to like...Draw to do 3D Modeling. I've always wanted to start 3D Modeling, but I'm a very very bad artist, I can't draw at all. Is it possible to be good at 3D Modeling ??
you would need to have an eye for a 3d environment if you could map out a simple primitive then you should be fine ;) no need for drawing if all your doing is modelling but it comes as second nature when you are honing your skills practice makes perfect :) also remember this golden rule in polygon modelling "Less Is More" (very important) you dont want too many pollygons to work with simple boxmodelling is a good example strip modelling is very good too, but its time consuming
it would be really great if you could do a tutorial on basic strip modeling as i have been searching for tutorials since watching your vids and found nothing to help hope to see somethng soon great tut otherwise :)
I have a question, from 1:55-1:56, you right clicked and a whole bunch of planes appeared around the eye--were those hidden? if not, how did you make them appear all at once and in the correct placement?
also what modifier are you using so everything is mirrored? i notice when you extrude one edge it copies it on the other side.......watch i bet it will be called the mirror modifier or something similar.
There is a mirror modifier, but you really want to use the 'Symmetry' modifier. And don't forget to turn on the beaker to show the end result of the stack.
your training video are great. but things are aimed a bit more towards advanced users. some vids for beginners would be great. also including topics such as explaining workflow and topology and so on. just so people can get some of the terminology down aswell. Great vids.
Hi there, i have a question about your unique modeling technique, strip modeling , how do you model like that? i mean how do you add more planes and connect it at the same time? while keeping with the shape? what settings and tools do you go about doing your strip modeling? I tried googleing your method but nothing really came up..... thanx for taking your time out to read this and hopefully give me some feed back. :)
In edge mode, select an edge, hold shift, and drag. That is how I extrude planes quickly. I do plan on working on a how-to video on this soon, but in the mean time do a google search for the Joan of Arc tutorial. It isn't strictly strip modeling, but there are 'elements' of it in the tutorial. Definitely worth a quick skim.
I really want to learn more about strip modeling, it is by far "cleaner" than adding tons of modifiers. Can you tell me if you are using a Edit Poly or Mesh? And I have so many questions. Like how can you add the missing polygons? Anyway I have so many questions I am REALLY looking forward to your how-to video on strip modeling. Could you tell us when do you plan on doing it?
Great work by the way, it's revealing to me a whole new set of possibilities!
haha the final version looks a bit more like a scary mask than the actual face you modeled it on, but nice nonetheless.
Perhaps I'll try to look into this kind of modeling as well (I've seen various methods but they're all quite hard, this one seems to be one of the most simple ways.)
Yea, Im a bit new to 3d studio max, but i would like to learn more (its actually starting to become a bit of a hobby of mine) I don't know much (haven't even touched lighting XD, being colorblind makes it a bit harder), the only thing I'm having problems with is getting the symmetry modifier to work, I've applied it, but it in no way takes any action by mirroring my movements, any suggestions? im using ver. 9
The first thing to check it the location of the symmetry modifier's gizmo. The easiest way to make sure everything will work is to line up your model so the middle seam (Where you want the mirroring to begin) is exactly on 0 in some axis (usually X for me). Then you can position the gizmo on 0 and there shouldn't be a problem.
nice, you use symmetry right? i first tried to make plane--edit poly--symetry when i try to adjust it it doesnt work. so when i rotate the plane to face another direction and now the symmetry works. so my question is, does symmetry works depend on where the objest is facing?

I like the concept of this tutorial, but I would do a few things differently...
1) Quick introduction talking about the actual tools being used and where they can be found in the interface.
2) Do not capture the full screen desktop. Making the window 800x600 so the text is readable to the viewer.
3) Audio. By getting a relatively cheap USB headset with microphone boom and noise cancellation (like $20 or $30)
Great technique! Can't wait to give it a try.

Well done :)
I'm working in 3D modelling and animation too, take a look at my channel. I made a making of showing how a game character is created from scratch.
Keep on the good work, 3D rocks !!!

I have a question, from 1:55-1:56, you right clicked and a whole bunch of planes appeared around the eye--were those hidden? if not, how did you make them appear all at once and in the correct placement?

also what modifier are you using so everything is mirrored? i notice when you extrude one edge it copies it on the other side.......watch i bet it will be called the mirror modifier or something similar.
steveskittles 2 years ago
There is a mirror modifier, but you really want to use the 'Symmetry' modifier. And don't forget to turn on the beaker to show the end result of the stack.

your training video are great. but things are aimed a bit more towards advanced users. some vids for beginners would be great. also including topics such as explaining workflow and topology and so on. just so people can get some of the terminology down aswell. Great vids.

beginner videos coming very soon. I've already started on them.

versaiteis 2 years ago
The first thing to check it the location of the symmetry modifier's gizmo. The easiest way to make sure everything will work is to line up your model so the middle seam (Where you want the mirroring to begin) is exactly on 0 in some axis (usually X for me). Then you can position the gizmo on 0 and there shouldn't be a problem.
