I fail to see how the Mormon belief is more ridiculous than other religions based on the reasons given. My way of looking on the different religions relative to each other is to look at how the followers behave in society and placing little importance in their books as these books will be interpreted in whatever way each follower chooses to.

@viper19861986 - First, the theory of the Big Bang is Cosmology, and has nothing to do with being an atheist. Virtually all atheists (including myself) are really agnostics, technically. We would LOVE to believe in this fantastic idea of an eternal life of happiness when we die, but there is simply zero evidence for it. The lack of evidence for a god means there is no reason to believe in one, just as you don't believe in pink unicorns. A belief in such things causes brain damage. Literally.

@MrPlanx The BASIS of free speech is free thought. If a person merely thinks or speaks of an action, no matter how heinous, it is not only legal, it is PROTECTED by the Constitution. To stifle the free expression of thoughts and ideas is to prevent discussion and possible change. I don't care if the idea is, it will not change if it is never discussed. Perversions can be "cured". Bigots can be "cured". Theists can be "cured". But their ideas have to be discussed and challenged.

Either the person was told these things as a child, which is scientifically proven to cause a specific type of brain damage in which the individual is no longer capable of rational thought on the topic of gods. @viper19861986 - First, the theory of the Big Bang is Cosmology, and has nothing to do with being an atheist. Virtually all atheists (including myself) are really agnostics, technically. We would LOVE to believe in this fantastic idea of an eternal life of happiness when we die, but there is simply zero evidence for it. The lack of evidence for a god means there is no reason to believe in one, just as you don't believe in pink unicorns. A belief in such things causes brain damage. Literally.

But Christianity is not benign. It is a social virus that mostly affects children, causing irreparable brain damage (which has been proven in recent neurological investigations of the brains of believers vs. nonbelievers). @MrPlanx The BASIS of free speech is free thought. If a person merely thinks or speaks of an action, no matter how heinous, it is not only legal, it is PROTECTED by the Constitution. To stifle the free expression of thoughts and ideas is to prevent discussion and possible change. I don't care if the idea is, it will not change if it is never discussed. Perversions can be "cured". Bigots can be "cured". Theists can be "cured". But their ideas have to be discussed and challenged.

Either the person was told these things as a child, which is scientifically proven to cause a specific type of brain damage in which the individual is no longer capable of rational thought on the topic of gods. Some great lessons, but the Bible has no monopoly on morality.

The issue is which faith the scientific evidence best supports. THE ODDS of the sequence of molecules in a cell coming together by chance are similar to the odds of magnetic letters randomly bonding together in a sequence to form all the words and sentences in a dictionary. Without the right sequence, a cell's molecules won't work. Amino acids can come by chance but not proteins. Without DNA there can be no proteins and vice versa. Gradually won't do. NATURAL SELECTION DOESN'T PRODUCE ANYTHING. It can only "select" from what is produced that has survival value. If a variation occurs that helps a species survive, that survival is called being "selected." That's all it is. There's no conscious selection by nature. It's a passive process. Natural selection is a figure of speech. The term itself is a tautology. Natural selection only operates once there is life and reproduction, not before. APES ARE QUITE COMFORTABLE IN HOW THEY WALK, just as humans are quite comfortable in how they walk. Even a slight change in the position of a muscle or bone, for either, would be excruciatingly painful and would not be an advantage for survival. There's no hard evidence that humans evolved from ape-like creatures anymore than there's hard evidence that apes evolved from four-legged-pawed dog-like creatures. ALL REAL EVOLUTION ( i.e. varieties of dogs, cats, etc.) in nature is the expression, over time, of already existing genes. Evolution is possible only if there’s information (genes) directing it. Only variations of already existing genes are possible, which means only limited evolution and adaptations are possible.
