@Brillmongot I think he does simple setups for these so he doesn't lose people. If you go to his website and look at his personal work, he is pretty damn good. The indoor stuff in this video sucked, but I think the outdoor pics were great.
@sightworkz His outdoor lighting looked a bit too hot for my taste. The lighting of the model seemed to contrast with the natural lighting, giving the subject a "Photoshopped" look (as if the model had been cropped out of another photo and inserted into the background). I think the scenes would have looked better with the flash dialed down half a stop and with a 1/4 CTO gel on the main flash for some warmth.
@cybjorg He did it in a hurry. It is possible to use a diffuser in this case because she is in the shade. I would use a softbox or umbrella to get a a softer look and optional a gel but I shoot in raw so I don't worry wasting time with it. I also would expose lock for her.
I got a Canon 7D which has built in wireless flash trigger. I've shot two weddings last year but I used the 580 on board, bouncing. Does the built in wireless work fine outdoors ? Why pro's use Pocket Wizards so much??
@florinmldvn82ro the built-in wireless function on the 7D works differently. It uses line of sight, not radio frequency. What happens is the 7D fires a small amount of flash that then triggers the flash off in the distance. This can be problematic when shooting into light or across long distances. It's great for basic stuff, but when setting up a full shoot... radio frequency seems to be the way to go... especially when using an umbrella.
Mungozan...i think you mean Joe McNally? Also Rmstudio, I agree, in a lot of situations something like a profoto head would be nice, but they also have their downsides. Pro's do shoot with hotshoe flash units and off the top of my head i know Joe McNally, David Hobby (author of strobist.com that has had great success OUTSIDE with hotshoe flash units) and David Ziser all use hotshoe flash in a lot of their work and do it well. Anyways, i just received my PW flex units and they're perfect!
2nd Dont use hotshoe flashes outside.. Get some real lights buying 2 canon 580's is just a utter waste of money... Get yourself a profoto mono head you will have 4x the power and then you can shoot with the umbrella outside in daylight.. Shooting with direct hotshoe flash light is god aweful and a recipe for disaster. The mini pocket wizard is a great idea and useful product. Especially for Wedding photogs that have on camera flash along with a studio head at weddings.
Great product.. But no pro shoots with "Hotshoe" flashes in a set up like this. they are way over priced for the power as well as they are way underpowered for "daylight" use. Notice how he could not use a umbrella outside cause the hotshoe wouldnt had enough power to light the subject. Not to mention the god aweful light quality he got .. "Harsh and specular" Only thing that helped the image was the model had a pretty face. Try that with normal subject and it would be a disaster.
@rmstudio FYI: I know lots of pros who do just that. No need to haul 20 kg of flash equipment around anymore these days. Ever heard of Steve McNally? Although I agree that they tend to be a bit underpowered for some uses..
How do you shoot in high soeed sync choosing Aperture priority mode, don't you have to choose Shutter priority instead? What if aperture priority gives you slow shutter speed?
can you also use a Pocket wizard plus 2 with the TT5?
tinithomas 3 weeks ago
@tinithomas yes you can but the flex TT5 has to be set to basic triggering mode a in the same chanel as the plus II to work

Hi! I've got a question. Does the ControlTL MiniTT1 & FlexTT5 and AC3 work with a Canon 300D? I know it's an "old" camera. :)
