Both shah and his father were installed by CIA and Brits.  They were both removed when their performance was not satisfactory to their installers.

The Shah was a great man whose primary concern was the security and welfare of his country, had his programme of development continued apace up to the present Iran would be a First World economy and with an educated populace could have easily transitioned to a functioning representative democratic government just as the ROC (aka Taiwan or Chinese Taipei) did in the 1990's.
