Can you tell me how it was exactly visiting the Dominican Republic? I love Dominicans (or I think), but I've heard some things about negative experiences that ppl have had visiting. I want to visit one day (maybe in college), and I think I would feel more in place there than in PR (no disrespect to Puerto Rico- love it!!!!). Just curious, lol....

It was pretty cool. There still stereotypes, despite the diversity especially when you travel into the countryside. Great Food and Great music. you won't be disappointed, but as a smart Moreno you will be crushing the stereotypes which is what they need.
I knw exactly what you mean. You're answering my question even more now that I am reading the dialogue between you and chsn09, lol. :D I'm even more interested in going, bc I've had ppl tell me I look Dominican. The whole discrimination thing is really disheartening.
Lol! Yes but discrimination is everywhere! Yeah I could pass off as a Dominican! People tell me I look Dominican or like a burnt Puerto Ricsn and a fried Cuban lol
Lol i know! That is what I say to people! I am like what is looking Dominican mean? There are different groups of ppl! That is just like saying she looks American lol! It is a nationality!
They wouldn't call you Argentine or Cuban if your accent sounds clearly from a language other than Spanish. On another note, most white Argentines and white Cubans don't look Nordic anyhow, they're predominantly Mediterranean in phenotype.
The British Argentine community is a small minority, made up of around 220,000 people. The vast majority of white Argentines are of Spanish and/or Italian descent, following with Franco-descendants as the third largest ethnic group.
The vast majority of white Cubans are of Spanish extraction.
Most white Argentines or white Cubans don't look like your average Swede or Norwegian.
The majority of argentines are of spanish or italian descent have have more of the southern european features (darker hair, darker skin), very VERY few have the stereotypical scandinavian features.
I am NOT disagreeing with Marllon! I agree with him to the fullest but there was just a discrepency over the different ethnic groups and phenotypes or European descendants on my behalf that is all!
Also a signicant number of so called "WHITE" argentineans have apparent Black African ancestry SUCH AS Martina Correa! :-)
The majority of white Brazilians are also of Mediterranean descent.
Obviously, there are many Brazilians of German and/or Polish descent like Gisele Bündchen or Xuxa, but even though there are many of them, they are still a minority, even within the white Brazilian population.
Oh okay! yes interesting! But what about Jewish Brazilians? Wouldn't their whiteness vary because many fled from Spain and Portugual during the Inquisition and many settled in Curacao! Many of the early settling Caribbean Jews left and went to Brazil in the 1600s I believe! And these were Sephardic Jews who tend to have darker or tanner skinn tones than Azkenazic Jews who are more whiter looking!
Jewish Brazilians are scarce. My father is a descendant of Sephardic Jews from Andalusia through his Creole father, but people with 25%-100% Jewish ancestry are very scarce.
I don't count Brazilians with 1/32 Jewish ancestry like me, as Jewish Brazilian. It's the same thing with Dutch Brazilians, you'll hardly find a Brazilian with predominantly Dutch ancestry, they're usually already largely mixed with another ethnic group.
You'll definitely find a higher percentage of Jews in Curaçao.
Interesting okay! Are there any other white ethnic groups in Brazil such as like the Arabs because they are considered white especially if they have a white phenotype such as Palestineans, Lebanese, and Syrians etc among others!
Well, if they're fair-complected, then most people will consider them white. I believe they're grouped as Asians in the census, though, since the Middle East is in Western Asia. My parents don't consider Brazilians of Middle Eastern descent to be white unless if their skin is fair.
Brazil has the largest Lebanese diaspora in the world. The Lebanese Brazilian population is actually larger than the population of Lebanon itself.
Oh yeah! Many of the Dutch Brazilians may perhaps be of Jewish descent/ancestry because Brazil has a history of Jewish ancestry arriving through the Dutch etc!
I just strongly identify with being black. I'm interested in black issues, anything black-themed, black beauty, black justice, and more.
I identify with black people. I don't identify with white people. I don't connect with most whites, whereas I culturally connect with most blacks. I guess it may be because I grew up in a neighborhood made up of predominantly ethnic minorities.
I only have one black parent lol. My mother is white of Celtic Portuguese extraction, and gets commonly mistaken for Slavic here in the U.S because of her foreign accent. She might have some black and/or Native American in her, but her parents are both white, and she told me that all her grandparents look the same as her as well, so if she has something else, it's a smattering.
My father is half Creole half Southern European, and self-identifies as Creole and mixed-race.
My father was raised in Brazil where racial construct is different, that's why he self-identifies as pardo/Creole/mixed-race, but I was raised here in the U.S., hence why I self-identify as black, due to being raised in a society with a different racial construct.
I put down black on everything, hospital papers, school papers, just everything. My mother obviously puts down white, and my father and sister put down Other. My Brazilian cousin is 3/8 black and 5/8 white, he also puts down black.
Oh interesting! I see! But you can't neccessarily say that because you grew up most of your life in the USA that is why you identify as BLACK?!
I know some people of your complexion that live in Brazil and they identify very much as black!
As a matter of fact Marllon, you could pass for white in the USA! If you said you were Italian or Jewish or something you would pass for white seeing your phenotype!
LOL I do not pass for white. Most people assume I'm of Lebanese or Israeli descent, not Europid. And, yes, I know that there are Levantines like some Lebanese and Israelis who are Caucasian, but the average American is unaware that they're white, meaning they wouldn't think of me as white.
Actually, it's not easy to find a Brazilian with my complexion combined with a similar phenotype of mine who self-identifies as black.
No, I don't only identify as black because I was raised in the U.S. I stated the other reasons in another comment on why I self-identified as black. Didn't you read them?
OH lol! Yeah i read your other comments! You deleted some of them BTW but I read the ones that you put up!
LOL! And yeah I was just saying that there are many brazilians of your similar phenotype that identify as black in Brazil! I know one Brazilian guy I went to school with since I was a little child and you can tell he has some African descent in him and he said that he has no Black or African ancestry in him! But I am pretty sure he did! You could tell lol!
chsn09 , there are a few "quadroons" and "octoroons" with a similar complexion and phenotype to mine in Brazil who self-identify as black. Most of the ones who do self-identify are from Bahia, where being black is seen as mostly positive and worthy of pride, or they're celebrities. Black consciousness has been rising in Brazil since 1998, so it's likely that there are more people like me self-identify as black today because of it. To say there are many is an exaggeration.
Also, DO YOU FEEL that on the Census you should mark other and put Brazilian??Yeah West Indians are ACTUALLY trying to lobby to pass a bill in the USA government to get their own box and category like HIspanics/Latinos so they could get political and government representation in the USA society and for votes etc! I think that would be cool for the West Indians to get their own category! They deserve it! Personally I think culture/ethnicity-nationality are WAY more important than race!
No, I do not feel like I should mark Other. I feel like Other is too lonely and a much neglected box. I don't feel right about marking Other and putting Brazilian, since that would be giving "Brazilian" a racial value.
Honestly, Hispanic/Latino is Eurocentric terminology, and I agree with Peruanista that it needs to be done away with. They should replace it with South American, Central American, Mexican, and Caribbean.
Well the term black and white and all many terms are Eurocentric terminologies! Go figure!
But yeah we should not replace Hispanic/Latino with South American, Central American, and Mexican, and Caribbean, BECAUSE then that is like giving those terms a racial value!
We need to just make it racial and then have people include their ethnic origins!
That is part of the reason why so many Afro Hispanics/Latinos DENY their blackness here in the states!
Oh okay lol! But you know you can put on the census Black/African American/Negro and then in the other box you can put BRAZILIAN or you can even put Brazilian in the OTHER box!
What are the largest black ethnic groups in Brazil after native Afro Brazilians! I heard Jamaican and Barbadian/Bajan Brazilians were significant as well as Haitian Brazilians??!
The Haitian in community in Brazil is minute, but will begin growing bigger soon, since the Brazilian government is granting asylum to many Haitians, due to earthquake they suffered.
Oh okay! Interesting! Because what happened to the Jamaican Brazilians?? There was an entry on Wikipedia about Jamaican Brazilians but I have not seen it in a while!
Is the Jamaican descendant community in Brazil large or any significant??
Also most of the Brazilians of Antillean descent live in a city/town called Porto Vehlo right? Cuz many came for labor projects and work!
Yes, many of them reside in Porto Velho and other nearby boroughs. Most of them reside in the state of Amazonas. They began migrating to the Amazonas around early twentieth century, there already might be fifth-generation Bajan Brazilians, and maybe even sixth generation. However, I'm sure the vast majority of these descendants are no longer of full Caribbean background.
Yeah I heard that many of them mixed in with white immigrants that came along! Yeah it is interesting and ironic to see because the movements of West Indians into all of Latin America for labor and construction and work projects was happening at the same exact time and periods!
I don't know what happened to the Wikipedia entry on Jamaican Brazilians. Speaking of Jamaica Brazilians, Adriana Lima is rumored to have some Jamaican ancestry.
Also, just so you know, both my sister and father don't deny being of African descent, despite not self-identifying as black, they both tell people they're of African descent if asked. However, my father's older sister, my aunt, denies her African ancestry, which is so hilarious because she looks so evidently mixed with black.
i wouldnt call it racism or even colorism. I definately got looks, they could tell I wasnt from there, some assumed I was Haitian but i didnt behave like one. (whatever that means ...idk), they were more shocked that i was african, because to them i dont look "african" as far as my facial features.
To be honest Haitians tend to look more African or darker than you lol! Yeah you look lighter skinned than the typical blue black dark African ppl are stereotypically used to!
I mean at times you look dark and sometimes lighter in your pictures and videos lol
yes Dominicans look at Haitians as shit bad and that is why so many of them negate their African heritage roots cuz many of them have Afro Dominican and even Haitian roots!
it didnt bother me. they just didnt know because there not many noticeable africans from africa there. & there Dominicans who are darker than me, and I was with a group of Haitians who are mixed race but people assume they are Dominicans. it is what it is.
Yeah I know white and mulatto and mixed race Haitians often pass of as dominicans! That is why dominicans are full of shit when they say they can tell the difference between their Dominicans and hairians! This is like thepot calling the kettle black!
Gracias!! :-) i'll definately be going back there, and other south & central american nations. but with more of an "awareness" agenda if you know what i mean. ;-) it was awesome!!

Nordic = Scandinavian
You don't commonly see white Cubans and white Argentines who look like Dolph Lundgren or Malin Akerman.
Marllon 2 years ago
Oh idk know many of the people you are talking about lol!
ALso there is a large British descent community in Argentina especially in connection with the Falkland Islands lol!
